This was our second time there and since 2006 to now the place looks a bit run down. Nevertheless it’s worth taking one of the tours just for the history of Mr. Hearst and his castle. Be sure to make your reservations in advance they fill up quickly.

This is a great destination or a nice side trip going up or down the coast of California. Hearst Castle is beautiful and picturesque from the coastal hills of San Simeon. The bus trip up was informative and our tour guide was knowledgeable about the history of the estate. We learned about how and why the estate came to be. It really is a testament to the life of William Randolph Hearst. Amazing! Please visit!

My wife and I stopped here on our way from San Francisco to Santa Monica. Its a must see for sure. We booked our tour in advance which I would highly recommend because when we were leaving, about 1pm, the place was getting crowded and some tours were filled up. There is more than one tour, we took The Grand Room tour which is recommended for first time visitors. We had a great tour with Mr Smothers. You can book ahead by visiting the official website and you can also see what each tour includes. Be sure to see the 40 minute movie at the end of your tour, very entertaining, more of a movie than a documentry but it tells the story of William Randolf Hearst. Like I said its a must see.

We've visited Hearst Castle in the past & taken the other tours but this was the first time to do the evening tour. What a treat! Volunteers in period dress lend a more authentic feel to what it must have been like to be a guest of Mr. Hearst. Tours of about 15 people max are led by well informed staff. We enjoyed it ... worth the time & money.

I had no expectations going in to Hearst Castle and I was blown away by the whole experience. The castle was amazing (from the history to the furniture to the sheer size), the docent was very knowledgeable, the views were gorgeous. I liked that you were on a tour for some of the gardens and the inside, and after you could roam the grounds outside of the castle on your own. Definitely set aside at least a half day to explore. We only did one tour--the Grand Rooms Tour--but you definitely could do multiple tours in a single day and spend a whole day there. Just be aware, the bus ride up to the top of the hill can be a little pukey, especially when the driver drives a little crazy. So make sure to sit in the front of the bus if you are prone to motion sickness!
