If you are in the area, this is a must stop. Elephant seals sunning their selves on the beach. Better than the zoo. Plenty of free parking. Viewing area is on top of a hill side. but their are areas that wheel chairs are accessible. Area can be very windy.

This is a perfect spot to watch the seals. Tons of photo ops, but most fascinating is to watch them interact with each other. It is a perfect location, easy to pull over short walk.

There is no reason not to drive 3-4 miles north of Hearst Castle to see the Elephant Seal Rookery. The best months to see pups are December and January. They are fascinating to watch. Kids will love them. There are usually a few docents nearby that do some limited talks as you watch. Good photo ops. I'd budget a minimum of 1/2 hour there. Most seem to be there about an hour. Walking is easy. Parking is good for motorhomes and such. There are very clean porta-johns there for your use, or you can work your way back to Sebastian's Store at the State Park for some goodies and a break (about 5 minutes away) at another nice quick stop.

It was definitely neat getting to watch the seals, since I live in the mountains and don't see that every day. It was very smelly and they just laid around mostly. They were kind of funny, though, with their mannerisms. Not a must see but a neat stop if you have the time.

This spot is right on the road and is a 5 or 20 minute stop. This is an absolute must see

There were hundreds of elephant seals along the beach fighting, swimming sleeping and hollering. This is one of the wildest spots I've ever been, straight out of national geographic
