Ragged Point Inn and Resort

Spent one night at the Ragged Point Inn on our trip up Highway 1. This is an older resort which is perched overlooking the Pacific. We booked a cliff side room, upper level. Our room was comfortable with a decent bathroom, a fireplace and two very comfortable arm chairs which we promptly moved in front of the large window, table and chairs as well as a small fridge. The room is a blend of park lodge and small inn styles.

The best part of the room of course, was the view to the Pacific and the surf crashing on the rocks below. The room is designed so that large windows look out to the view, as well as the small enclosed balcony. This was a wonderful, sheltered spot to sit and just take it all in. We slept with our window open just to be able to listen to the surf.

The grounds are beautifully planted with wonderful views all around. Amenities in the room were great -- nice soap, wonderful towels and nice touches such as wine glasses. The staff were very helpful. This is not a five star resort, you are paying for the view and a comfortable setting. If I get a chance to return, I certainly would.

Room Tip: The cliff side rooms are worth the price -- however, even the garden view rooms looked out toward th...

We stayed one night in king ground cliff side room - dated, old TV with few cable stations, bathtub drain clogged so it fills with water when showering, no cellphone service (we use Verizon), no telephone in room, no internet service (they say there is, but it was down the whole time we were there). After 11 pm someone knocked on our door to tell us to lower sound of TV - it wasn't too loud but of course I made it lower, my husband was sound sleep and I felt scared and trapped. We had no way to contact help if needed, i.e. police, medical emergency. My back was in very bad shape when I got out of bed in the morning - I was in pain and couldn't bend. I felt fine until I slept in that bed. The sheets were scratchy too. The restaurant was not busy at all but service was very slow at lunch - they took forever to take our order then waited 1/2 hr to receive a wrong order however they took that charge off our bill. It was a big chunk of wasted time out of our day to sit in the restaurant. It was freezing outside and very foggy the whole time we were there so we had no views - that was our main reason for staying there. The room was overpriced for the quality they provide. In hindsight, we should have stayed at a chain hotel/motel a little further south - and that's my recommendation to you.

Room Tip: Stay somewhere else

The only reason I did not rate this property as 'excellent' is that our bathroom (around the tub/shower) was moldy; otherwise the room was large, clean and property was second to none. Even if you choose not to stay here, you should consider stopping by to see the views. The gardens and property are well-maintained. We ate in the dining room as there really is no other choice for dinner, although it was a bit pricey the food and service were good.

A delightful respite off the coast of 1, a relatively short drive from Hearst Castle and one of the best options in the area.
Don't come here and complain about the fog - welcome to California. Enjoy.
The restaurant was... ok. Go ahead and enjoy; it's fine, but if you're from San Francisco you might find it a bit wanting; it wasn't terribly exciting, but the views can't be beat.
Leave your door cracked and listen to the waves crashing below. Appreciate the real key you're handed. Understand that late checkout will cost you $30 (but they're not going to give you grief if you show up at 11:05). Maybe skip the food stand outside, but definitely check out the mini-mart/gift shop.
And, if you have the knees and time, hike down to the ocean. it's steep and slippery but borderline fine for amateur hikers, beautiful once you get down there, and perfect for rock-stacking.
Oh, and jacuzzi tubs... +1. Delightful.

Room Tip: Ocean side all the way, baby.

Last summer my husband and I did a road trip through California. We pre-booked accomodations before leaving home. From the looks of Ragged Point on-line, we were really looking froward to our stay. When we saw our room and where it was we were quite surprised. Right next to the sidewalk being used by everyone who stopped. I felt like I was in a public park not a higher priced hotel. The grounds and view were absolutely breathtaking but the noise of people and their kids and dogs stopping through and then the music started! Apparently they have live music on weekend afternoons!
Upon arrival we asked if there was another room and went to have a look. Way out of our price range!! Maybe it is quieter off season and mid-week but if you want to enjoy the grounds you paid for then be forewarned.

Room Tip: ask for the "hotel" not the rooms attached to the office. money is no object then go furth...

The views are stunning (if the weather is clear), and they offer plenty of access to those views. The staff is invariably friendly, professional, and eager to please. Unfortunately, the owners have let the facility inexcusably date and deteriorate. The "deluxe" room was dated and worn, with cheap fixtures, an old over-the-air TV with poor reception, and no internet or phone. The pillows were small and cheap, the furniture was in the wrong place, and the windows were filthy. The whole facility has a run down, unfinished sense about it. Definitely not worth its high price.

The restaurant has an excellent cook and a creative menu, but the filthy windows and sills and dusty rafters put me off the meals. When you drop $70-$100 for dinner, you expect at least table linens and cleanliness. They had neither.

Visit the area for sure. Enjoy the views, maybe visit their little shops. But for the price ($$$$), there are far better accommodations 25 miles south in Cambria.

The view and grounds at the Ragged Point Inn are pretty amazing. The sunset is also incredible but when it came to our room we have to say that it is mediocre at best as well. The sheets were dirty and the comforter. Also, we guaranteed two beds and only got one. They wheeled in a roll away bed. (Not so nice) The room wasn't worth the money that we were paying for it.
Also, the service staff at the restaurant is untrained, unfriendly and not helpful.
Overalls, I loved the views and would definitely come again.
