We had stayed many years ago at the Ragged Point Inn on a bicycle trip. We enjoyed it then--and also again on our 51st anniversary! We had a great room with wonderful views. The fireplace in the room was for heating--and, of course, for coziness. Liked the small, private garden right outside our sliding glass doors as well as the settee just for two! The grounds are lovely and the vistas breathtaking. The dinner was very good as well. And the resort is not far from the elephant seal rookery near Cambria, an added bonus! We would definitely stay there again.

First of all - this place is in a perfect location with sprawling grounds, perfectly landscaped, on cliffs that overlook the Pacific, even with a little hiking trail down the cliffs and places to watch the sunset. Its also in the perfect location on the south end of Big Sur, notoriously missing many reasonable prices to stay that allow you to spend a full day driving the PCH and then stop without having to cross the rest of the distance to LA. Even the restaurant serves pretty good food especially given the monopoly they have on being the only source of food within a 30 minute drive.

But the rooms, oh, the rooms! They were perfectly clean, but they looked like straight out of a motel 8 from the 1960s. They were clean, yes. But they had flickery florescent lights, old bedding, that weird green institutional carpeting. I mean it was so bad we were joking about how bad it was. They still put the "sanitized for your protection" tape on the toilet! Also the walls were paper thin - we could hear every word spoken by our neighbors. Basically its a $60/night room in a $300/night location and a $200/night price tag. Our room was quite large, they could have easily renovated it to expand the bathroom, updated the bedding and lighting and made it seem to be worth our money and more.

But that said, if you are making the drive from Monterrey to LA and want to take your time and enjoy the sites over two days, I wouldn't hesitate to stop here.

Room Tip: All the rooms seem to have some sort of view or patio. Obviously Ocean view is more posh.

Ragged point is an awesome place to stay. The views are just incredible and the little beach in the cove is beautiful. Our problem was there was a massive heat wave hitting California at the time and the temperature was in the 90's!!!!!!! Unfortunately there are no ceiling fans or air conditioners in the rooms. At 11:00 at night the temperature dropped to 89 degrees. No breeze, nothing!!! Just unbearable!!! Would have loved to light the fireplace and relax but it wasn't meant to be. We booked a month in advance so we had no idea what the weather was going to be. The front desk said they haven't had weather like that in 5 years. The nearest place to buy a fan is Cambria so we stuck it out. Loved the views but didn't make up for the weather. Rooms were nice a little older but in good condition. About the size of a regular motel room. TV and wifi was sketchy but worked. I would stay again but not during the summer.

Room Tip: If you can afford it stay in the building along the cliffs. If not the back building is ok.

Beautiful location and a wonderful view from the small balcony of room #32. Fireplace is a cosy feature. Bathroom tired but great shower. The "fog lifter" packs of coffee delicious. Is that all I have? Basically a good class motel room with spotty wifi, and awful TV reception. Yes, I know - I should get away from it all! Dinner was OK, $30 - $45 for meh entrees - but I guess it's sort of remote from vendors? Why am I focusing on price - because at this level it should be classier experience. But how can I argue with the location? That's why 3 stars. If I owned an Inn on Rte 1 with all that traffic, and hardly any room supply, I'd probably charge even more. $320 for a Saturday night. PS I'm a fit hiker - do not try the path down to the ocean. It's dangerously steep and totally unmaintained. Too risky.

I was recommended to the Ragged Point Inn by a friend, and what a little gem this place really is. After a long drive from Los Angeles (approx 300 miles) i was delighted to arrive at Ragged Point. The hotel sits atop a headland with stunning views of the Pacific Ocean. The air was so fresh, and the views were magnificent. Rooms are reasonably priced considering the setting, and the food in the restaurant was delicious modern Californian cuisine with a great selection of local wines. The rooms are well furnished and the beds are comfortable, but this is not a design hotel. That doesn't matter one bit. The Ragged Point Inn is a gorgeous place to spend a relaxing night while driving the coast, and is only a short drive from Hearst Castle. And on check out, I was given a bag with water and delicious cookies for the journey. Perfect hospitality!!

Room Tip: Pay the extra and get a room with a good view of the ocean.
