“One night stop over for Hearst Castle”
Reviewed 2 October 2011

Stayed at this hotel while travelling from San Francisco to Los Angeles down the Pacific Coast Highway. This road has got to be one of the finest drives ever! Decided to stop off for one night to visit Hearst Castle. We were not disappointed. The hotel exceeded our expectations. The staff were very friendly upon check in. The rooms were basic, but large and clean and had all the toiletries you could ever need! The restaurant was basic but the food was good and not too expensive. However the hightlight of the stay were the fire pits on the beach. After our meal we sat around one of the fires chatting to some other guests and it was a really relaxing experience after a long days travel. Anyone visiting Hearst Castle should really consider staying here. As for Hearst Castle, it is amazing and definitely worth a visit.

My wife and I stayed here for one night. The excellent reviews are well deserved - the staff is friendly and accommodating, the rooms are spacious, comfortable and spotless and the location is one of the best on this part of the coast for beach access and views. The adjoining restaurant is mediocre for the price, but still OK; we did not check other restaurants in the immediate area. I would recommend a first floor ocean view room, since it provides nearly the same beach view and access as the more costly oceanfront rooms, even though it is set back more. You can tell the owners of this property take pride in their facility and operations. This is on our Top 10 list of the best California coast motels.

Terrific location if you're visiting San Simeon to tour Hearst Castle. It's only about a 5 minute drive from the hotel to the castle visitor center parking lot.

Staff we encountered at this hotel were extremely friendly and helpful - no complaints there! The bed and multitude of pillows were so comfortable and we had a small ocean view from our window which was an unexpected bonus. There is no a/c but the windows do open and the evening air blowing from the ocean is quite cool. Tip: If you call the front desk they can bring you a table fan for air circulation at night when you're trying to sleep if you don't want to leave the windows open.

The only complaint we have was the noise from nearby rooms on the Saturday night of our stay. It appeared there were a couple groups of boistrous individuals who were simply enjoying themselves; however, they were being completely inconsiderate to others in the hotel who were not partying that evening. Fortunately we travel with earplugs so were able to sleep. :)

There was a vast difference the following evening, on Sunday, as those groups must have checked out. It could have been a fluke when we were there but just be aware that it's an old hotel and you can hear most everything from your neighbors, especially when they are yelling back and forth right outside the room.

There's a restaurant on-site and a Mexican restaurant within walking distance. Across the main street there is a small market if you need any supplies. (Alternatively, you can travel about 5 miles further south to the town of Cambria for shopping or restaurant options.)

Finally, the BW has several outdoor fireplaces with seating facing the ocean which are lit each evening - that was delightful on Sunday evening to sit by the fire and watch the sun set. A perfect ending to our stay in San Simeon!

Room Tip: All rooms have exterior entrances.

Reserved this hotel as a getaway location to celebrate our 46th Anniversary. View of ocean front from room was great. Hotel provided excellent ammenities and the room was fantastic with it's own fireplace. Reservations was made quickly and checkin was quick. Ocean front was within walking distance and hotel was only minutes away from Hearst Castle. Hotel also provided outside fireplaces which were lit every night at 7:00 p.m. allowing guests opportunity to sit by the fire and enjoy the company of other guests and listen to the sounds of the waves as they rolled in and broke on the shoreline. The hotel restaurant was separate but provided excellent menu and service. Wineries close by for those that enjoy wine tasting. Would recommend this hotel be put on your place to stay list.

Room Tip: Call early to reserve your room. All rooms have patios for ocean viewing. Most rooms have clear vie...

Good value for money, beachfront room as ordered, out of the sliding doors onto the beach, marvellous. Large room, wood fire, good bathroom and comfy beds. Good, value for money restaurant, super stay, thoroughly reccommend.

Stayed two nights & would do it again! Although the room decor is basic and outdated; the location, customer service, & all of the amenities make up for it. From in room wood burning fire places, free internet service, nightly bon fires on the bluff, and fully stocked mini bars with a great assortment of beer, cocktails, wine, & snacks at affordable prices. The views of the sunsets alone makes this a bargain!

Room Tip: Room 162 has a view of the ocean, easy walk to the bluff / bonfires, & pool is right outside the...

I reserved an Ocean Front room at this hotel, and actually called the hotel twice to make sure that this was what I would get. When I checked in, I got Room 281 which is clearly on the side of the building and NOT a direct Ocean Front room (it had an oblique view of the ocean). Of course, all of the REAL Ocean Fronts were full for the weekend. When I talked with Ken Welch, the Front Office Manager, he told me they considered 281 an Ocean Front, and that it was his favorite room on the property. Rubbish! All of this was a ploy to get a higher Ocean Front price for an Ocean View room. Even with the adjustment he gave me on this room, watch out: This hotel has a "Best Western" attitude-- a large notch below the well-run hotel chains, and an attitude that they will try to take advantage of the vacationer--until the vacationer calls their bluff and complains.

Room Tip: If you want an Ocean Front room, ask them to fax you a map of the property, and have them pre-assign...
