“Best Ocean Front Hotel Ever”
Reviewed 3 July 2014

Loved this hotel. Staff is the best. Ocean front rooms are great with wonderful amenities down to the binoculars, stocked fridge, extra fridge, in room safe, coffee maker, fireplace and service. The bathrooms are luxurious with glass blocks set in the shower walls. The breakfast is fantastic. The beach is wondrous and healing. The building is solid and well made. I will definitely plan another stay at Cavelier San Simeon in the future.

This was our 3rd trip to the Best Western Cavalier and we have yet to be disappointed. We stay in the "Terrace" rooms that are located just feet from the beach and ocean. The rooms are most comfortable and include their own fireplaces and balcony's. The staff is fantastic. If you need something all you have to do is ask. We have also stayed in the "Kings Row" rooms which are nice accommodations but are set farther back from the water. In the Cambria\San Simeon area my wife and I would not stay anywhere else.

We arrived on tuesday afternoon around 5:00pm after a four hour drive. We walked into the comfortable, clean lobby and were greeted by a very friendly gentlemean who checked us in immediately. We were in our room within 5 minutes of arriving.

The hotel has two stories and we were on the ground floor which was good because I don't believe there was an elevator and it would have been difficult to carry our bags up the stairs. We were pleased with our room; not fancy but comfortable. To make up for the somewhat dated room (i.e. acoustic ceiling) they took good care to compensate for it with nice touches: two comfy double beds, soft, good quality linens (pillows were very soft so if you need something firmer, ask in advance), thick towels (though we were only two, they gave us enough for four - hotels are usually skimpy with towels), coffee maker (Flavia type with individual coffee pods), iHome clock radio system for iPhone/iPad, basket with amenities: eye makeup remover, nail polish remover, hairnet, shoe shine, shampoo, conditioner, lotion (nice scent), sewing kit. The room also had a flat screen tv, full length mirror, matching chairs and a table in front of the window (one of the chairs was as hard as a rock, I think someone may have put their knee through it and they repaired it by putting a piece of wood underneath). If you were staying multiple days, the kitchenette type area would work great - it has a small refigerator (honor bar type you would need to empty to use), plenty of counter space, cups, ice bucket, cabinets/drawers. Shower looked to be updated, the rest of the bathroom was nothing to write home about but everything was really clean.

There is no airconditioning in the rooms but they have a tall, rotating fan that did the trick. You can also open the window and if the air is right and the tide is in, you may even be able to hear the waves!!

We requested an oceanfront room but apparently, there are no rooms with two beds that have a view. To see the ocean or smell the ocean fresh air you just have to step outside your room (any room) and there it is! It's just a short walk down to the beach. They also have firepits with chairs that they light at 8:00pm that overlook the ocean. Eveything seemed to be wheelchair accessible, even the telescope that was pointed out to the sea.

Swimming pool faces the ocean and although we didn't use it, I think you may have a view from poolside.

There's a restaurant next door with a broad menu and good food but for other restaurant recommedations the lobby has two binders chocked full of menus. They also have coupons for various wineries available at the front desk, just ask.

The negative for me was the thin walls, ceilings, doors etc. It was extremely noisey from 6:00pm until around 11:30pm when it seemed that everyone settled in for the night. It was 4th of July week and perhaps it was busier that usual but it was worth noting.

We paid $189/night. I would recommend this property and would stay here again.

This hotel (actually motel) is the best of this small town according to the reviews we read. It's not the worst hotel I've stayed in but out of the 5 different hotels we stayed in on our trip it was by far the worst. I'd probably give it a 2.5 if there was such a thing.

The rooms are spacious and we did have an ocean view room which helped a little. We weren't enamored with the smell of our room or the fact that the walls and shower curtain in the bathroom had mold on them. I wouldn't want to spend more than a night there which is all we had to so we could go to Hearst Castle the following morning. It's outrageously priced for what it is but I guess they can get it because there isn't a ton of competition.

It is fine for one night. Try to get an ocean view room if you can. The restaurant associated with the motel was actually decent. The food wasn't spectacular but better than I expected.

Tons of amenities - should stay a couple days just to soak up the ambiance of the hotel. Our ocean view room had an unbelievable view. Enjoyed a leisurely walk along the bluff & the beach. Wish we had the time to enjoy the ocean front fire pits, but, did had the opportunity to use the fireplace in our room. The bathroom was spacious with a separate sink/vanity area. Closet space for hanging clothes.

We enjoyed two nights at the Cavalier on a brief visit to San Simeon to see the Hearst Castle and visit the Paso Robles wine country. Our second-floor oceanfront room was large and almost directly above the breakers. The room amenities exceeded our expectations, and the fireplaces along the bluff provided a great catalyst for meeting fellow guests from all over the world. The staff was very friendly and accommodating. Stunning beach front.
