My husband and I just enjoyed a wonderful weekend visiting Hearst Castle. We both agreed that it was really the hotel that made the weekend! This is not your ordinary Best Western - it is truly a cut above. We had an Oceanfront room on the second story with a fireplace and private balcony. There is a small patch of grass directly beneath the balcony, then a bluff, and then the beach. It puts all of the waterfront hotels in Cambria to shame, since they all have a road separating the hotels from the beach - this is the real deal!

We checked in and were greeted by two very kind and professional women in the lobby. Once we got to our room and saw the proximity to the ocean and the amazing view, we decided to get dinner to go and eat it on our balcony so that we could enjoy the sunset while watching the ocean waves. After dinner, we went down to the fire pits that the hotel lights each night - all we needed were the ingredients for s'mores and we would have been set!

The next morning we decided to order room service for breakfast so that we could again enjoy our meal outside on the balcony. The hotel provides binoculars so that you can watch all of the marine animals in action. It was quite a serene setting and such a relaxing way to start a day.

We spent the day touring Hearst Castle, then returned to our room around 4:30. We had heard people at the fire pits the night before discussing the fact that they had seen whales and dolphins from their balconies the day before. As we made our way up to our room, we could see lots of dolphins very close to shore, and they were jumping and spinning - what a treat! We were so mesmerized watching them that we again went to our balcony and used our binoculars. We watched the dolphins until they moved on, and we also watched the sea otters playing in the water.

The hotel provides plenty of amenities - our room had a private balcony and a fireplace (which we didn't get to use due to the warm weather). The room came fully stocked with shampoo, conditioner, lotion, mouthwash, cotton balls, Q-tips, bathrobes, nail polish remover, laundry bag, and more. The minibar is fully stocked. The beds were comfortable.

The walls were plenty soundproof - we didn't hear a sound from our neighbors, although I know the rooms were all occupied.

The hotel is a pet friendly hotel, and we noticed quite a number of guests visiting with dogs.

We never got to use the hot tub, but I'm sure we would have loved it!

The only negative about the hotel was the fact that there is no air conditioning. When we first arrived, the room was hot and stuffy. We left the balcony door open for the rest of our visit to keep the fresh air flowing. We slept with our balcony door open for the breeze (and had to turn up our TV to hear it over the waves, and then use ear plugs to sleep with the balcony door open and the waves so close.) I tend to get very claustrophobic without air circulation, so the lack of air conditioning was a big concern to me at first, but it was lovely with the balcony door open and the gentle breeze. For this reason, I could only stay at this hotel if I had a second floor room - I would have been in trouble on that warm weekend with no air conditioning if I had a first floor room and couldn't leave the balcony door wide open.

We will definitely be back to this hotel.

Room Tip: Request an oceanfront room on the second floor, and be sure to use your AAA card for the best rates.

Considering the dodgey, inconsistent reviews of the available places to stay in Cambria, driving an extra 5 minutes makes this Best Western an excellent alternative.

If you’re going to see Hearst’s Castle, its closer than staying in Cambria. And its just a short drive if you want to go back to the little town of Cambria for its shopping and restaurants.

Its not quite as high-end looking as the website makes it look but it is very nice, clean and comfortable with free laundry facilites. It does have the firepits on the cliff as advertised as well as fireplaces (our room did, can’t vouch for all of the rooms).

Don’t go for the expensive breakfast option, there are plenty of places to get something to eat as you drive further north along the coast.

We travel to the Central CA coast several times a year and stay routinely at this Best Western PLUS Cavalier Resort because it is in a beautiful setting with great accommodations and dog friendly. Restraunts in the area are great as is access to the beach.

I couldn't review online prior to booking the room because signal is very unstable in the road. We called twice, and booked in person. They forgot to mention that there was not air conditioner in the room until after we paid and there was no time to cancel. Outside, the hotel looks Ok, great location, amazing view, front ocean. The room was clean but it has a strong humidity smell because no air circulation. Parking is right in front of your door. To get air, you have to sleep with windows opened. They only open half way and drapes stopped the air coming in. So, you also have to sleep with open drapes. There is no privacy in your room. You can hear every conversation and noises outside your room. Noise started very early in the morning. Fridge is very well equipped with items to buy, so you can't use it because there is no space for your own food/drinks. Not a hotel prepared for summer warm nights.

This is our favorite hotel to stay at when we visit Cambria. In fact, we are planning our wedding, and our honeymoon will be spent at Cavalier Resort. Our room had a great view, the most comfortable hotel bed we've ever slept in, and great service. Love this hotel!

We enjoy the Cavalier when traveling with our dogs - doggie towels and travel "poop bags" are just 2 of the nice things they provide for our pets. Walking lanes, a beautiful view and beach, comfortable lodging, outdoor fireplaces, and convenient access to the Central Coast wineries make this an ideal choice for us and our pooch-loving friends when enjoying a CA wine-tasting adventure together.

I book this motel every year not for me but for my two dogs. We have a wonderful pet friendly vacation. They can run on the beach. The fireplaces are wonderful for those chilly evenings. The refrigerators great for keeping the picnic items fresh. Pick up stations a great addition. Give your pets a vacation of a lifetime! Thank you Best Western!
