The good: the motel has fresh paint, new beds which are not altogether too hard for a decent night's rest, laminate flooring, black- out curtains, and is far enough from the highway as not to be noisy for a good nights sleep. Also, NO SMOKING in the rooms Nice! Door card reader locks at the entry to the hallway. Nice, but people still smoke right by the door.
The not as great: TV's have snowy reception.Typical in-wall heater, but works well and is new. Only one thin blanket. Burr. The motel has a corridor where loud neighbors will wake you up (thankfully only one idiot at 5:30 AM yelling outside of our door). Pillow a bit hard. I brought my own pillow.
FYI If you've never stayed in a Motel 6, here's what you need to know: the only things you're given in the way of toiletries is a thin bar of soap. Bring your own: shampoo, hair dryer, etc. There are NO Do not Disturb Signs for the doors.

Have really no complaints in regards to this Motel, price was good for a Saturday only, 3 miles from Hearst Castle and start of Hwy. 1 drive to Monterey. Decor is leaning towards new trend in Hotels. Only wish they had a coffee maker in the room.

This Motel 6 has been where my husband and I have had many, many weekend getaways. It was definitely in need of new paint on the outside, and fresh carpet would have been nice. Otherwise it was always simple, clean, and pretty cozy. Always really nice staff, too.
Now the halls and rooms look like the 1970's crashed into the early 21st Century. Burnt orange is now the wall color behind the beds, red/orange thin curtains, cold and slippery laminate flooring, furniture right out of a fast food place. The bathrooms are now sporting black countertops and this yellow plastic towel holder thing. The whole room looks jarring, and echoes, not the serene coastal inn it used to be. You can hear people's shoes slapping across the floor next to you. Even with the heater on, the room felt cold, because there wasn't any carpet or thick curtains to help insulate. The coverlets are orange and tan, and very thin. And as a senior, I was nervous about slipping on the floor in my socks during the night. The only good things were the new under window heaters which were nice and quiet, and the nice new paint and signage on the buildings, and the folks who work there are very nice. It's not their fault.
Sad to say, we had our last stay at this Motel 6 April 4-6th 2014.

Room Tip: You have to love orange.

On CA Hwy 1, near San Simeon, about 3 miles south of the entrance to Hearst Castle state park, is a strip with about a dozen different motels. Almost any of them must be better than Motel 6. Charges $2.99/day for a wifi connection that drops out all the time. Ice machine empty. No fridge in room. Key cards failed to open doors on the second day (no, we didn't BOTH demagnetize them). Not recommended.

Stayed here one night en route to Big Sur. This is an unrenovated but more or less clean property near Cambria, CA. With various discounts, I paid under $50 for the night, which was a pretty good deal for the area, though this was the off season. The staff was nice enough but don't expect much in terms of service. They could not even provide a basic map of the area.
Also, evidently pets are allowed at the hotel so one may hear occasional barks during the night.
It was okay for me traveling alone, as my needs are basic, but I think I'd upgrade if I were staying with a loved one.

Weekends on the Central Coast can be very expensive at most hotels in San Simeon and Cambria, in the 200 to 400 per night range. If you have pets it can add up to much more than that as many hotels charge upwards of 25 dollars per pet, per night. When we want to get to the Central Coast and take our 3 dogs with us we always look to Motel 6 in San Simeon. We are headed there is weekend and are being charged 55 dollars per night for double queen beds, microwave with mini frig, and NO PET FEES! Heck, we are hardly in our rooms except to sleep. It is right across Highway 1 from the ocean and just down the street from San Simeon State Beach to the north and a few miles to the south Moonstone Beach in Cambria.
The property is large and well maintained. It has plenty of grassy areas for the dogs to do their "business". Please, Please, Please pick up after your dogs. Parking is abundant. Staff is friendly and attentive. Ice and vending machines throughout the property. Nothing fancy but we have extra money to spend on dinners and gifts while in the area!

Room Tip: Rooms on the west side have windows that face the freeway and the ocean. Rooms on the east side have...

Staying at the Motel 6 in San Simeon is a good way to balance the cost of tours at Hearst Castle, which is located just three miles from the motel. We stayed here as a family of four in a room with two queen beds in December. The room was $62 for the night, and we had the option of spending an additional $6.95 per person if we wanted a full breakfast in the attached restaurant. The rooms are basic Motel 6 -no frills- although our room had a view of the Pacific Ocean. Some of the rooms offer a mini-fridge for an additional charge, parking is free and the rooms are accessed through interior hallways. Reasons to stay here: location and budget pricing.

Room Tip: Request an ocean view room.
