“Nice Vintage Hotel”
Reviewed 7 May 2012

Yes, vintage can be charming. But, there does come a time when some updating is in order. For those of us detail oriented, there is some definate paint touch-up needed and some of the surfaces needed some deep cleaning. The shower in our room needed re-grouting and one of the handles on the bathroom sink leaked. In addition, the late afternoon cheese and crackers are a tub of cheese spread with an assortment of crackers, and the cookies they talk about in the evening are a plate of Oreos. I will say the staff is friendly and we did not have any problems, I would just like to see this beautiful property have a bit more upkeep for the prices they charge.

I've been at a dozen places in Santa Barbara over the years, from the ultra-high end to a motel, and this is the only place that I've come back to. It has a historic main house with probably a half-dozen modern small buildings on the property, which also has a lovely garden. The rooms are a bit small, the TVs are old, and the sink in the bathroom is 8 inches too low. But the rooms are immaculate, quiet and pleasant. In the morning, you can have your breakfast either indoors or in the garden, where you can also have your wine/cheese/fruit in the evening and your cookies and milk at night (all included). I really like the fact that while it's on a quiet side street, you are only a couple of blocks from the main drag - State Street - so you can walk to the many restaurants and shops a few minutes away.

The upham was quaint, cozy, and well kept. Great B&B for an overnight stay in Santa Barbara and good price. Perfect location for walking to state street for dining or shopping. Breakfast was good with friendly service.

This is a lovely hotel. The grounds are beautiful, and the lobby area (where wine & cheese is served in the afternoons and breakfast is served in the morning) is warm and inviting. The room (in the Carriage House) was no frills but comfortable. The location is great -- just a block or so off of State St. Highly recommend!

I have been using the Upham for over twenty years. In that time I have used the hotel by myself, with family, put other family members there, put employees there, vendors and many friends. I have always been pleased and never received a negative comment from any of our guests, employees etc. Many had very positive comments.
In the past month I stayed at the Upham and another larger Hotel in Santa Barbara. I was not suprised at the Upham by a higher than quoted room rate or an $18/night parking fee; I cannot say the same for the larger hotel.

We stayed two nights at the Country House which is just across the road from the main Upham hotel. On arrival at the country house we were greeted by Maureen (the hostess) and the smell of warm cookies and cinnamon.

We had booked the penthouse and it was worth every penny. Its like an apartment rather than a suite and the balcony area has great views of Santa Barbara and is big enough to entertain (we had family staying in another room elsewhere in the b&b). It was my husband's 40th and Maureen had left a gift of cookies in the room waiting for our arrival.

The house is historic and homely. The service is super and everything was clean. The first evening saw a rainstorm and it was great to have the fire in the shared living room where wine, cheese, snacks and cookies where served. We met other guests here which was great fun.

Breakfast is smaller than in other places we've stayed in the USA but actually we loved this. Its English muffins, jams, pastries etc. then a main hot course. We had waffles one day and scrambled eggs another.

Parking is good and close. Its super close to walk to state street and all the great restaurants and shops. The Upham (across the road) has a great restaurant which we also ate at and would recommend).

All in all a great stay that I would repeat if we are in Santa Barbara - all made more enjoyable by Maureen and the other guests! thank you

Really cool little gem in Santa Barbara. Stayed in a cottage room and loved it! Wine in the afternoon, milk and cookies at night and a great restaurant in the property. Loved it!

Also, the staff was friendly :)
