“Lovely hotel with excellent customer service....”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

My husband and I just returned from a 2 nite stay at the Upham. We have stayed here previously but it's been several years since our last stay. Our rate booked with the hotel was $249/nite with room assigned at check in meaning that if a better room was available we might be upgraded. The hotel was full the first nite but we were given a very nice queen bedded room in the main building. We had some difficulty with the very soft and a bit lumpy bed and a noisy AC so we asked about changing rooms for the next nite. We can't thank Fred at the desk enough for his help in doing this. The hotel was not full and he changed us to a large king bedded room with a very quiet AC and perfect mattress. This room was obviously more but he covered it with our existing rate. That's what I call excellent service! The hotel has pretty gardens and a welcomed evening wine and cheese spread as well as oreos and milk at nite. Breakfast is continental but with a few extras...hard boiled eggs, cheese and fruit. There is free parking which is essential in Santa Barbara where parking is really tight! It's an easy walk to everything in town. Don't miss the Mission, the courthouse tour and the Santa Barbara Bowl for a summer outdoor concert!

This place is wonderful; a gem tucked away on a side street just a couple blocks from Main Street, the primary shopping and eating drag in downtown. It has an old-school charm and comfy, cozy rooms. Mainly older folks, with lots of guests from foreign countries, but that just adds to the charm. A nice breakfast of pastries, oatmeal, cereal, coffee, and tea, as well as a wine happy hour in the evening. And an easy stroll to the main shopping and eating area of Santa Barbara or, for an even better experience, have your dinner at Louie's, the restaurant on-site. Prices are a bit high, but it's worth it for a special experience.

This hotel is a real find. It is situated right in the middle of Santa Barbara with an old world charm that you don't often find in an American establishment. Readers from the UK would understand if I describe it as an Alastair Sawday type of place! The staff are delightfully helpful and the gardens, where they serve breakfast and afternoon wine and cheese, are a haven of tranquility. We will definitely return!

An Old World charm Inn near Main Street and Santa Barbara Mission.
Our room was quite large with queen size bed and the fireplace. The spa tub in the bathroom was great to relax in. The toiletries and the bathrobe were provided. Afternoon wine and cheese was a nice treat. A little pricey, but not bad for high rental Santa Barbara is known for.

My wife and I were celebrating our anniversary in santa barbara. I picked this establishment for two reasons: value and location. The price was reasonable for santa barbara lodging. We stayed in a small bungalow with a private patio. Perfect size as we enjoy being close to one another. All of our room needs were met promptly. Kudos to the Upham for gifting us champagne and chocolate to celebrate! (thats what pushed them from a 3 to 4 stars) Drawback was that the room AC was weak but cool weather made that irrelevant. The breakfast is hearty, sufficient for a days activities. I would pass on the wine and cheese and visit a local wine bar, of which there are plenty to choose. The location was great! A couple of blocks from state street but far enough to maintain tranquility. Walking distance from good restaurants and downtown entertainment, even the wharf if your up for a long walk. Lastly, but definitely not least was that staff did not look happy. Every encounter except the nice lady who brought my towels was lacking brightness and friendliness I have come to expect from the hospitality industry. Good place, good stay, goodbye...

I used to stay in bed and breakfast places all over in Europe, all nice, peaceful very pleasant, But we never stayed in one in the USA. I had no idea how this going to turn out.
Well turned out...Perfect.

Very nice historical building, clean room, helpful stuff, very relaxing atmosphere three blocks from State street but feels like miles away. A really good escape from the XXI century. and yes Sunday I woke up and smelled the coffee. Coming from the downstairs lobby.
