My husband & I stayed at the Upham after our wedding. It was LOVELY! Our room was quiet and very private. It was the perfect place to decompress after the mayhem of our wedding. I sat in one of the courtyards writing thank you notes one afternoon, sipping tea and enjoying a homemade chocolate chip cookie (both complimentary) as my husband napped.
Also, the staff is very sweet! (My husband is allergic to dairy and they specifically made dairy-free muffins one morning just for him!) They also give great restaurant suggestions (ask for Eve is she's working).
The decor was beautiful and our shower enormous. The bed was incredible. I would highly recommend the Upham if you're looking to get away in the beautiful town of Santa Barbara. We will be going back for many anniversaries to come!

It seems that many rooms in The Upham are under $200, which, considering the area, is a good deal. My husband and I loved the fenced-in patios for privacy and the snacks in the lounge. The snack area and patio had an inviting feel and lovely atmosphere. Also, when we added an extra night at the last minute, the staff attempted to find the best deal for us. At first, only a suite was available, but when we called back a few hours later, (ready to pay for the suite) the receptionist let us know that a cheaper room had just opened up.

We had a lovely stay at the Upham. Our room was very small - just enough room for a queen bed and your things, but we were staying one night, so it was fine. The hotel grounds were beautiful! The gazeebo was pretty and a great place for complimentary wine and cheese in the afternoon. The breakfast was a nicer version of your standard continental fare - which suited us just fine. All in all, it was a lovely place in beautiful Santa Barbara, and we feel it was a good value. We would stay here again.

I stayed at the Upham Hotel thanks to my boyfriend who made the reservation as a surprise for my Birthday. The hotel's location is very convenient, walking distance to downtown SB and also to restaurants around the area. Upon check in the gentleman who was at the front desk wasn't friendly but I would say professional. Although to be honest, I thought that at least he would mention anything about my B-Day or give some recommendations to a nice restaurant but he did not say a word; instead he just gave us the key and a map of the property to get to the room easily. My boyfriend wanted to make this occasion very special, so we came back to the Front Desk to ask for another room type and it was until then when the gentleman was a little bit more friendly. He showed us two more rooms and at the end we decided to keep the same we had before. The complementary wine in the afternoon is not the best quality but is a nice touch especially to know the neighbors. The rooms are clean and with enough toiletries. There is not traffic in the rooms that are in the back or in front of the main yard. The hotel is a beautiful property but instead of having an empty fridge in the rooms I would suggest to have a minibar full of amenities that people can enjoy on a leisure day or for a special occasion. At the end, a lot of guests stay here for a getaway.

Probably our tenth time at the Upham in a dozen years. As usual the grounds are restful and the location ideal, but little by little any evidence whatsoever of a desire to delight the customer has dissipated. Front desk in recent years has been staffed with something between indifference and an air of bemused superiority. Above all else, the cookies-and-milk-at bedtime, the afternoon wine and cheese, and the "breakfast" routines have become an embarrassing exercise in least-cost execution. I don't have to leave home to get a stale Oreo; there are always two or three in the bottom the breadbox, and the Chardonnay equivalent of Two-Buck Chuck with some Kraft singles and stale crackers isn't exacly livin' large at 4pm after a day on State Street. But nothing more perfectly symbolizes the deterioration than the "Continental" breakfast with its limp, day-old sales-meeting-type pastries, and the little foil single-packet servings of Skippy (please!) peanut butter which prove, when opened, to be old enough (at the very least a year) to have separated into a tiny brown hockey puck covered with rancid oil. Come on, folks. You have a beautiful property smack in the immediate vicinity of some spectacularly good restaurants, which makes for painfully stark comparisons. Take some pride in what you're doing with food.

Lovely setting, great service. Located at the north end of town it is two blocks off the main shopping street and an easy, pleasant 30 minute walk to the mission. Louie's restaurant and bar is attached to the lobby and is a atmospheric little spot with nice wine and friendly staff. Be forewarned that all rooms are not equal. The first room we had was fine, but unremarkable and small. The internet service did not work despite repeated attempts by staff to reboot the router. If you need internet and a bit of space avoid the coach house. The second room we got was the sort of place you could stay for a week. A cottage in the middle of the compound, it overlooks the english garden and the old victorian hotel. The room here was spacious and tastefully decorated. There is some street noise, but it seems to die down in the evening. The Upham offers a nice continental breakfast, free coffee all day, wine and cheese early evening, and cookies and milk before bed. You can't say you weren't looked after here.
