The Upham is located in a fantastic spot off of State Street restaurants and shopping. It is charming and romantic.

We stayed in the main house and the room was adequate; however, nothing too exciting to speak of. The room was somewhat clean but I noted that the bathroom did not look as clean as I would have liked (hair on the floor - obviously not mine in color). Also, out room was towards the front of the hotel so we woke to the noise of cars driving down the street. This didn't really bother us much but it's something to note - ask for a room not facing the front if you stay in the main hotel. Before we left, we peeked in to a few rooms in the Rose cottage - they were so cute and looked more modern, we would definitely come back to stay in one of those rooms next time. Santa Barbara is an expensive town so while the room rates we paid were kind of pricey , it was great value compared to other options in the area. The hotel also serves a free continental breakfast and has wine and cheese in the afternoon and oreos and milk in the evening. We didn't eat the breakfast but it looked OK - pastries, cereal, yogurt, coffee, juice. I recommend Tupelo Junction Cafe for breakfast/brunch - only a couple of blocks from the hotel and absolutely delicious.

We were able to walk to wonderful restaurants for dinner - Olio e Limone, Palace Restaurant (both highly recommended). We ran down to the beach and jogged along the water. Shopping is so convenient from the hotel as well. Overall, we were very happy with our stay and had a wonderful weekend getaway at the Upham.

I stayed in the Garden Building in a room that felt like a little European walk-up apartment. It was charming, comfortable, clean and quiet, the staff was helpful, the continental breakfasts were outstanding... I can't say enough about it. It was also interesting to read about the history of the Inn and know that I was staying in the oldest hotel in Santa Barbara. I haven't stayed in other hotels like it in Santa Barbara but I would bet the Updham is one of the most elegant in town.

I recently stayed at the Upham at the recommendation of friends, when I was in Santa Barbara for a wedding, and was beyond pleased with every aspect of our stay. The staff were friendly and forthcoming with helpful tips for seeing the area, the grounds are lovely, the beds comfy. This is definitely not your cookie-cutter hotel-- it really is charming and unique and felt like part of our trip, as opposed to just a place to sleep. I was tempted to sit in an adirondack chair with a book all day and just soak up the sunshine in the garden, but alas, we did have a wedding to attend...

Highly recommended, for sure!
