“We'd hoped for better”
Reviewed 27 January 2009

Perhaps our expectations were too high, based on the glowing reviews we read here. We booked executive King room 107 for a two-night stay of $358, including taxes.

PROS:
Ample parking
Convenient, safe and quiet location close to beach and a 20-minute walk to State Street.
Friendly and responsive staff.
Spacious clean room with ceiling fan, fridge, coffee maker, microwave, 32" flat-screen TV and DVD player
Airy breakfast room was filled with cheery music and offered free online access.
Breakfast included fresh fruit, bagels, cereals, yogurt and assorted beverages.
Hot coffee, tea, apples and hard candy available 24 hours.
Cruiser bikes available to guests, and the beach bike path is only a few blocks away.

CONS:
Need sign directing guests to front desk from parking lot.
Our room's only window faced the parking lot.
Bathroom offered a single hook and limited counter space.
Narrow and dark shower stall.
I had to request a box of Kleenex.
King bed contained only three pillows for two people. A spare pillow and blanket would have been appreciated in the closet.
Although our room was vacant all morning, the maid did not arrive until 3 p.m., when we'd returned for a nap. So our room was not cleaned during our stay.
Pastries at breakfast tasted stale both days.
The bikes' brakes were worn out and there was no way to adjust the seats or inflate the tires, which made us feel unsafe.

Santa Barbara hotels are expensive, so perhaps we expected too much for the price of our room. Because of the concerns described above, however, I'm not certain we'd return.

If you want a memorable meal, however, we enjoyed delectable dinners at Seagrass and Opal. Neither are inexpensive, but we felt we received quality and value for the price.

  • Liked — You can't beat the location.
  • Disliked — Room was underwhelming for the price.

The Eagle Inn is perfectly situated for enjoying Santa Barbara. It is an easy walk to the beach and to all the fun on State Street. The rooms are adorable. We have stayed here twice, once in the main part of the hotel and most recently in the Santa Cruz cottage. The cottage is comfortable and well-appointed with a large jacuzzi tub, a dual-head shower, flat screen TV and many other amenities. It is quiet and secluded -- perfect for a romantic getaway. It also has a sitting room and small kitchenette that would be useful on a longer stay

Paul, the hotel's owner, arranged for us to do a wine tasting trip for the day in Santa Ynez and gave great dinner suggestions in town. The staff is friendly and helpful. A nice breakfast is provided in the morning.

I would definitely recommend this hotel for a stay of any length in Santa Barbara. It has all the amentities of a larger hotel with the charm and personal attention of a quaint inn.

This was the only accommodation we hadn't booked in advance for our California trip last november. Before leaving Carmel we read the good comments about the Eagle Inn in Tripadvisor and decided to give it a try. It was really a good choice!

There are several kinds of rooms with different kinds of amenities and prices. We opted for a standard queen room for about 90$ and eventually got a free upgrade to an executive king room.

The place and the neighborhood were very nice and the room was comfortable. The girl at the reception was extremely kind and complimentary breakfast definitevely a plus. If you can get a good rate, this is surely the place to stay in Santa Barbara.

My girlfriend and I had a chance to stay at this beautiful Inn over this past weekend. We really enjoyed the charm of the building and the extreamy friendly staff. We were lucky enough to stumble on a wine tasting the hotel was having which gave us a chance to sample some great local wines and meet other guests. This Inn has a great location very close to the beach but very quiet since it is in a residential area.
Enjoy,
Bobby

Santa Barbara is expensive. I was looking for a good deal, but still a decent hotel. This place fits the bill. I'd say it's a bit better than a Best Western. When we first walked in, the lobby smelled like mildew. However, the smell was only in the lobby and not in our room. I rented a basic King room. I did ask to see some of the larger, more expensive suites. THey were gorgeous and huge (but pricey). I only stayed one night, and this place worked out great. It's very close to the water (walkable), but not that close to State Street (we drove). Check the hotel's website for specials and deals.

We travel up the CA coast often to visit family in the Bay area and often stop mid-way for a break. There's no better place to refresh yourself than Santa Barbara and our home away from home there is the Eagle Inn. We've probably stayed at a dozen places and once we tried the Eagle Inn (based on other TripAdvisor reviews) we've never strayed. The cottage rooms are our favorite as they are quiet and spacious but we've never been disappointed in any of the rooms (and we always try a different one). The complimentary breakfast is just enough to sustain you through the morning. Lots of places to eat within walking distance with a great residential location near the harbor and wharf. Staff are friendly and helpful. Love their energy-saving measures, from lighting (your key card activates room lights so when you leave they automatically shut off), to recycling newspapers, to the option to reuse towels a second day. Warm cookies in the afternoon, coffee/tea 24 hours and free use of their PC. Check out last-minute specials on their website; frequent guests occasionally get substantial discounts by email. What's not to love?

  • Disliked — Nothing -- recommend without hesitation

My husband and I showed up without reservations on a Sunday night looking for a room for 2 nights. The front desk staff was delightful. She showed us the 2 rooms she had available and let us decide which we wanted. Unfortunately, we could not have the same room for 2 nights so we packed our things when we left in the morning and in the afternoon when we returned from sghtseeing, our bags were waiting in our new room. (She discounted the rate an additional 10% for the inconvenience but we didn't blame them because we did not have reservations.) First we were in the Santa Catalina Cottage and we thought it was luxurious. It was newly remodeled, clean and beautifully furnished. We felt like we were staying in a friend's home, not a hotel. The second night we were in the Santa Rosa Cottage which was larger, even nicer and had a small kitchenette and a balcony. Again, we didn't feel like we were in a hotel, it felt like a beautiful home. Both rooms had a large jetted tub, fireplace and flat screen TV. We paid $220/night during the summer which we thought was a good rate.

There are several buildings that make up the hotel complex. The main building is in a residential neighborhood (there are a few other low profile hotels neaby also) and they have purchased several of the homes immediately around the main building so you really are in a home, not a large institutional building with long hallways. It's much more intimate and homelike so it feels like a B&B not a hotel.

Breakfast was nice and included in the room rate. It was a two block walk to the main beach road where a trolley runs up and down the road if you don't want to walk. We had a wonderful stay here and I would recommend it as a very luxurious, romantic getaway at a reasonable rate in a great location.

  • Liked — Beautifully decorated rooms that felt like a home not a hotel.
  • Disliked — Nothing to dislike, everything was great.
