Motel 6 Santa Barbara - Beach
Ranked #45 of 52 Hotels in Santa Barbara
Reviewed 15 February 2014

I hate Motel 6 for a number of reasons - tiny rooms, uncomfortable beds, skimpy towels, awful sheets, complete lack of basic ammenities, but at the start of a 4 month road trip and Santa Barbara being a pricey town, I got talked into trying it.as we travel with our own bedding and towels, how bad could it be. Pretty bad -actually. The front desk people were nice, however after getting our key and hauling our luggage upstairs, the room we went into was clearly occupied. The unflushed toilet and overflowing garbage cans were gag inducing. Shown a second room that was superficially clean at least. Wifi must be purchased. That is a rip off. The front rooms have a bit of an ocean view and the back a view of the freeway. Either side is noisy. The front maybe a little less so. The beds are cheap and saggy. There are two dishcloth sized towels provided for two full sized adults. The worst part is the nasty common areas. The walkways are FILTHY punctuated with overflowing reeking ashtrays. You better be a smoker if you stay here. Gross. Spend a little more - stay somewhere nicer.

This hotel is the right price (off season anyway) but is not good for a long stay. Everything seemed clean, no complaints there. Staff was friendly enough. My issues were with the lack of amenities; my husband and I were staying in Santa Barbara for nearly two weeks. After day two at this hotel I walked over to the Pacific Crest Inn By the Sea to see if they had refrigerators, microwaves, and coffee makers, they did (review for that hotel to come, sitting in it now). The Motel 6 was fine with us canceling the rest of our stay and we are next store now. If we were here for just a couple of days the Motel 6 would have been fine, but they don't provide anything but a place to sleep (not even shampoo)....if you are staying for any length of time I wouldn't suggest this place. Fun fact though: It is the first Motel 6 ever built, in 1962 and back then it cost $6 a night. Oh, and as others have mentioned, it is awesomely close to the beach and walking distance to State Street and Stearns Warf (it's a bit of a walk but very doable.)

Room Tip: Try to get a room with an ocean view

1st room we were given was dirty. Given a second room and it was dirty too. Bathroom toilet and room floor were disgusting. Had housekeeping come and clean toilet before we moved into the room. Very small but well decorated and great location. Basic accommodations nothing fancy, not a bad value for the money but inspect your room carefully before you accept it.

Room Tip: ask for room on front side of building second floor. inspect room for cleanliness before you move yo...

This motel is perfectly located just a half block off the East Beach and an easy walk to the SB pier and bottom of State street. The rooms reminded me of European inns, very basic, very clean. The office staff is really friendly and helpful. Free coffee in the morning. They have a nice pool with lounge chairs. The free parking makes this place even more inviting. I definitely recommend it. But beware--only soap is provided, no shampoo or lotion.

Room Tip: I would ask for a room that faces the rear parking lot as the front rooms tend to get a lot of noise...

We never stay at these motels...once before. In Palm Springs....give that a miss. So we tried this , because another hotel recommended it, saying it was newly decorated! Well, Let's just say they slapped paint on a pig....noisy parking lot....what got me was I had to pay for wifi.....I thought they were kidding....so didn't buy it the second night. When we checked in, they said room was ready...when we opened the door..garbage was on the floor, toilet had paper in it...bed was ...looked. Like. Maybe. The staff was using it . So they gave us another room, but we had to wait hours till it was cleaned. Won't come back to this motel icks.

Room Tip: don't take a room on the back of this motel..freeway 101..runs right behind this place..c...

As you'd expect for its price range but clean, as required and just away from the beach.

Eric our man on reception couldn't to enough for us and had taxi's waiting as we needed.

Don't expect anything plush but if you're there for a brief stop, this is just fine.

If the only reason of staying here is to sleep in the room, that's ok. The mattress is Kinda hard. We had three adults stay in one room and it was very cramped. There is really no place to put your suitcase. They need to change the bathroom doors. Ours were like closet doors that swing out into the sleeping area. It would be better with a pocket door. The rooms are that tiny. But, I always had hot water in the morning for a shower. And you are not even a block away from the ocean. That was nice. No free breakfast (like donuts or anything) but free coffee. I'm from the Midwest so I like it cold at night to sleep, even with the air on as cold as it can be AND on high, it was still pretty warm in the room. Very quiet, no complaints there. Close to the $0.50 trolley that takes you up State Street to go shopping.
