The dinners at the SBCC Gourmet Dining Room can't be beat; they're as good as any restaurant in Santa Barbara. Dinner comprises four courses, three different wines with the first three courses, and coffee with the dessert, all this for $40 [excluding tax and tip] ! Each course has about five different choices. The restaurant is run as part of the culinary arts program on the campus of Santa Barbara City College; the students work with faculty to develop the menu for each semester, then alternate between the kitchen and table service. This is NOT simple cooking. The dishes are complex and beautifully constructed. The ingredients and flavors are great. I was initially skeptical of what would be prepared and served at a "community college", but I've now had dinner here about six times [lunch Mon-Fri; dinner Thurs-Fri, part of the semester], and I've never been disappointed. Food compares well to famous culinary schools.
