The Canary is such a beautiful, cozy hotel. It is beautifully decorated, large rooms with canopy beds. The roof top with the pool, hot tub and fireplace overlooking the mountains in one direction and the beach in another. Every day from 5 to 6pm there is free wine in the quaint lobby. the bar and restaurant was also excellent. Just a great place to stay.!!!!

Room Tip: When asked if we could get a break on the valet fee ($25. per day) the man could not but upgraded ou...

My spouse and I spent a weekend in California and our first stop was the Canary Hotel. Since I am an Inner Circle member with Kimpton's loyalty program, I was able to experience this night for free under their "new hotels" perks. The free stay also included a $50 dining credit that we could use at their in-house restaurant (Finch and Fork). First off, the location is great - only a minute or so from the main freeway right in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara. There is valet parking at the hotel for a fee, but we chose to park on the street for free a block away. We were given a nice JR suite upgrade at check in and a delicious welcome amenity of red-velvet cupcakes. The restaurant was delicious and all of the staff were fantastic and friendly. The bed in the room was one of the most comfortable beds I've slept in (I travel about 70-80 nights a year in hotels)! You can walk to many shops and restaurants from the hotel and they have a partnership with the full-service gym next door for a great workout. Next time I am in town I won't hesitate to stay with Kimpton again at the Canary!

Room Tip: As for a goldfish if you're lonely - :)

We went to Santa Barbara to celebrate the end of a long medical journey, opting for the Canary because Kimpton has always met my desire for unique, intimate and interesting hotels. The Canary set a new standard for excellence: a knowledgeable, enthusiastic and welcoming staff, a great location, a stunning room, great views and oh, that rooftop deck! I stay at Kimptons because they value quality and service; the staff of the Canary exemplified -- and exceeded-- Kimpton's standards. I'll be back!

Stayed here for a short two night stay and should have extended at least one more night. Was here for our anniversary and couldn't have picked a better place to stay. Spanish colonial meets hip and trendy. Rooftop pool and jacuzzi with a wonderful view of the Santa Inez mountains and ocean views. Complimentary wine hour! Too much to do in so little time.

The Canary's location is fantastic - right downtown and close to everything -- walking distance to restaurants, a Ralph's grocery store, and lots of shopping. A short walk to the trolley which loops around town, so you can get to Stern's Wharf, the beach, or the zoo without the need for a car. However... if you have your car, there's a gas station across the street from the hotel. In addition, the Canary is beautifully decorated and the scenery from the rooftop is stunning. We loved the free evening wine tastings.

If you're looking for inexpensive, diner-style, kid-friendly, breakfast food, try the Cajun Kitchen. For slightly fancier breakfast fare, try the Savoy Cafe (not to be confused with the very adult Savoy Theater). For dinner, Aldo's has great Italian food.

Generally speaking the hotel is great... but not quite as nice as I would have expected for the price. We were in town for a wedding and traveling with our 8-year-old son. We stayed for 5 nights in a suite with king bed in the bedroom and a pull-out sofa in the separate living room.

The first odd thing we noticed was that there was no TV in the living room -- only one in the bedroom and a small one in the bathroom. As a result, we weren't able to play a DVD for our son in living room, while we watched TV in the bedroom.

On the first night when we had just started unpacking, the door to the bedroom dresser broke off. However...they did repair it the next day.

Although we booked the room for 2 adults and 1 child, we had to call down to front desk for linens for the sofa-bed. Then, we had a hard time getting housekeeping to make up the sofa-bed each day. They kept forgetting about it.

The entire suite was lacking in overhead lighting. My son always brings a few Legos on vacation, and it was really difficult to find them on the dark hardwood floors with such poor lighting.

The mini-fridge was so crammed with products for sale, we hardly had space for a few beverages that we picked up from the supermarket.

The bathroom did not have a hand towel drying hook. You had to throw the hand towel on the countertop.

Another weird thing...they did not have a brochure in the room with a list of hotel amenities -- showing local restaurants and delivery places, drugstores, supermarkets, telling you the hours for gym next door, information on public transportation, etc. You had to call the front desk for this type of information or figure it out on your own. For example, even though our son was with us when we checked in, no one even mentioned the fact that you could request a goldfish for your room. I only knew that because I had seen it on their website.

Also, we happened to be traveling during my birthday, but I had to call the front desk multiple times to request the "special gift" they said I would receive. We were there for 5 nights, but they ended up bringing me a bottle of champagne at 9PM on the night before we checked out. We couldn't even drink it because we had to be up at 3AM to catch our flight home out of LAX.

Room Tip: Not all rooms have balconies, but the ones that do, don't include a sitting area -- just a small...

My husband and I stayed here two nights with our Australian Shepherd. We were traveling with my boss, his wife and their dog. The hotel is centrally located. We walked everywhere. The staff is absolutely remarkable. Everyone from the valet staff, to reception to room service to service at the bar was truly exceptional. Everyone was super friendly and super knowledgeable. Our dogs were also treated so royally. The room and bathroom were super spacious and the mattress was very comfortable. We honestly can't wait to come back to this fine establishment. Thank you all for an unforgettable stay.
