“Could be even better...”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 6 August 2014

We chose this hotel for the rooftop pool and terrace area, which featured a lovely fireplace for the cool California nights. We had a very pleasant room with a four poster bed, decorated in Spanish colonial style. There is a complimentary wine hour from 5.30-6.30 and the white wine was delicious.

The rooftop pool was a lovely area but on both of our nights (we were only here for 2) we were refused entry to the terrace because of a private party and could not sit by the fire to enjoy the evening after our dinner. My husband appealed to the security guy (who was not that sympathetic to the residents; more in favour of the people in the private party) that we were residents but to no avail and we were banished to the pool side - however the party guests were then in our hot tub and so-called residents' area! When we got back to our room I rang reception to complain and Guest Services said they would pass my comments on - we heard nothing more and no apology. I do think residents should take priority and be able to use the amenities we had paid for - the hotel is quite expensive.

We had stayed in hotels this trip where the staff excelled; unfortunately this hotel was not one of them. A lesson in customer relations needed perhaps.

Anyway, on a positive note there was the Old Spanish Days Fiesta while we were there and the whole town was 'rocking' with the most wonderful atmosphere. The town is so pretty with spanish style architecture, a pier and lovely boardwalk to the marina where you can eat and drink also. Santa Barbara is California meets with Mediterranean! We did have a lovely time in Santa Barbara inspite of the hotel not making us feel as welcome as they could.

Room Tip: We stayed high floor - could get noisy if low level as hotel is surrounded by streets

A friendly and comfortable hotel although it was very busy and hectic on the Saturday night when we arrived. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the service was friendly, however, its location in the centre of Santa Barbara is its greatest asset. Plenty of shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance and a stroll down to the harbour and pier is within most people's capability. The food and the service at the restaurant was satisfactory but the personal touch was missing. We were asked to wait in the bar until a table became available and after 30 mins the barman had to remind them that we were waiting.
The rooftop area is popular but the pool is small and the sitting out area is limited. Valet parking only but the staff were very helpful.

A charming luxury hotel with fabulous rooftop. Pool and jacuzzi and you are surrounded by mountains. And when hungry can walk all over State Street for every type of restaurant - and shop up and down the street - from Marshall's (great buys) to more lux stores.

One caveat: make sure the power is on before you show up. Apparently the power grid hotel is in gets shut down occasionally. When we showed up we discovered this, but they booked us a room nearby and we returned the next day. Very glad we returned, too. Also, quite a singles scene in bar/restaurant on first floor - if you are interested.

Room Tip: we had room on 4th floor and it was fine - very quiet for sleeping.

The hotel was decent enough, but definitely not worth the price we paid for it. For background my family and I frequent hotels at this price range at least once a year when traveling and of the 10 or so in this range I've been to this was by far the worst of the lot. There was no one major thing wrong with the hotel, but between the small room, the street noise -- especially the skate boarders rolling by at all hours of the night, and the nice, but 1970s-esque bathroom fixtures it just added up to a hotel in a lower class than pitched. Location is nice and staff is super-friendly, but couldn't possibly make up for the demerits.

Room Tip: Ask for a room NOT facing Chapala -- unless you're OK with street noise.

Dear Joe B,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience at the Canary. I am sorry that you encountered some issues while staying here and as a team, we will review what you experienced and make steps for improvements. While we cannot control the noise outside the building, we will make efforts to eliminate skate boarders and other elements by being more vigilant as we walk about the property. I have not heard many guest concerns regarding dated fixtures and decor in the room, but we are updating constantly and I will pass your feedback to our design team. The property was built 10 years ago and we have had a couple refreshes in the rooms since, but your comments are still valued and we will take steps to update as much as we are able. Thank you again for your feed back and we hope to serve you again soon.

Stayed at the Canary last weekend and had a nice experience. The rooms are nice, a good amount of space, but there is definitely room for improvement. The water from the shower smelled odd and we woke up one morning with black gunk in our sink (came up from the drain), not pleasant. The check-in process was a bit off as there seemed to be a lot of confusion about our rooms. They did make it up by sending up a bottle of champagne. The restaurant food was mediocre, and the pool upstairs was lacking service. They absolutely need a pool attendant working at all times, it was a bit chaotic trying to find someone to help us with chairs, umbrellas, etc.

Stayed here on a mother-daughter getaway weekend in July 2014. Booked using Hotels.com rewards points, as the rack rate was ~$300 for the night we stayed. They put us in a room on 2nd floor facing the street. Very nice room, but it was so incredibly noisy even at 3pm that we knew there was no way we'd be able to sleep there. Explained situation to front desk and they had a nice valet walk us to another room on the 4th floor to consider. It was facing the parking structure and was much quieter (probably had to do with the lack of screaming children in the adjoining room).

There was a wedding reception on the roof that night, so we couldn't really take advantage of the roofdeck (although we did sneak up to take a quick peek). We enjoyed dinner in the hotel restaurant. The location is great for visitors who want to stroll State Street.

Will stay here again if can get a deal. Otherwise, will try another property closer to the ocean.

Room Tip: Rooms facing the parking garage are much more quiet than those facing the main street!

LALela27,
Thank you for letting us know about your experience at the Canary. The Canary is one of the most perfect urban resting spots in Santa Barbara, since we are so close to shopping, night life, restaurants and the beach, but we are downtown and you can hear street noise from time to time. By no means are we New York, but I do apologize that you were distrupted by what was happening around town. We would love to have you back at the Canary and we will ensure that your room is quite and nothing but perfect. Thank you again for your feedback and we hope to see you back in Santa Barbara again soon!

I think it's great that so many people had a wonderful experience here. I didn't, and feel people should know in order to be wary of this place--especially on a weekend. First, I booked a room with two beds and was given one king. That's not what I want when traveling with my teenage daughter. Our room was on the top floor, and there was a party directly above. After an hour of thumping music, we asked to be switched to a room on a lower floor. Front desk responded by saying that they'd been getting plenty of complaints and would gladly move us to a king room on the 2nd floor facing the parking lot. (Not exactly the 2 queen room with views of Malibu mountains I had booked.) The following day we heard a loud barking dog in the room next door. We also could hear their phone ringing every few minutes when the front desk called to ask them to quiet their dog. So we were moved to the only available room (with 2 beds) and it was on the top floor. Here we go again...there's a wedding on this Saturday night. Until 11pm we heard the dj, announcements and music. On a positive, the rooms are charming and clean, and the restaurant has a really good breakfast (IHOP this is not!). The best feature is that the hotel is a block from State Street--where there's great shopping and restaurants. FYI The manager was very empathetic and gave us a huge discount, but our stay was exhausting instead of relaxing. So if you don't mind going to sleep until after 11pm, and are lucky enough not to have a dog next door, and don't mind not getting the room type you requested then go for it.
