“Great Stay”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 August 2014

My husband and I had an opportunity for a quick get away and chose to stay at the Canary since the kids were not going to be with us on this trip. The location of the hotel is perfect if you plan to spend most of your time downtown shopping and dining. We were also still able to leave the hotel and head toward the hills for a good run in the morning. This location is not far from the beach, but if you are looking for more of a beach stay, this is not the hotel to stay in.
The staff was friendly and the food at the restaurant was very good. We would definitely come back again for an adults only weekend.

I travel often and rarely criticize hotels. I wanted to be able to write a stellar review here but my husband and I walked away from this hotel scratching our heads.

We booked a one bedroom suite for one night. There was a 10% discount and was over $600 after tax etc. Not too bad for high season in SB but at that price our expectations of the hotel were higher than what we found.

Our room was on the second floor facing a heavily traveled very busy street. The bed was quite comfortable but the street noise kept us from falling asleep and woke us up very early.

Our toilet was not functioning properly and because we checked in in the evening and immediately left for an event we did not discover this until after 11pm. The kid at the front desk was very kind and helpful but we were originally told engineering didn't come in until 6 am the next morning. It eventually worked but was very noisy.

The phone in the bedroom was dirty, probably from the previous guests make up, but nonetheless disconcerting.

The make up mirror in the bathroom had a huge black spot in the middle( burned? Cracked? Not sure)- unusable.

When we called for a roll away we could not get through to the front desk for some period of time. We finally called room service and they relayed the message for us.

The room in general had visible wear once you were settled in.

Upon checkout the next morning ( we got up and packed and left right away) we called the front desk for several minutes- no answer, next phoned to get a busy signal and this continued for the next few minutes until we finally got through to call for our luggage. The bellman was extremely nice and very apologetic even though it was not his fault in any way.

All in all a bit of an odd experience in less than 24hrs. The staff when we could reach them were very nice and friendly. The location is good if you want to be downtown and near State St. but, with The El Encanto now open and The Four Seasons often offering rates that are not that much more than this was we probably won't be returning.

Prompt check inn. Poor service given from the staff when requiring any kind of real assistance. over priced for what you receive , staff not interested in looking after their customers and loud noise internally ( banging of doors and thin walls) and externally ( passes by on a busy road and constant traffic noise) Small rooms , weak shower . Doesn't live up to the reviews. The service is the worst I have had in california out of 9 hotels. I would not recommend this hotel for the price it costs. Lots of other places to choose from in Santa Barbara which is a very nice place with lovely bars , restuarants and shops.

Very friendly staff, but not worth the money. For "boutique", read; noisy (bin emptying in the early hours), no shampoo and shower gel in the bathroom, a shower that drips, rather rains water and tiny double beds. A great location in town (restaurants and shopping). Would have no complaints at one third the rate, but not worth the money. Once in your room and using the facilities, it's just a motel.
We are a family of four and stay in 4 and 5 star hotels around the world, we don't mind roughing it and we do enjoy luxury. We've experienced many hotels, US, East and all over Europe, but this one is very disappointing for the money. Maybe if you stay out of season for one hundred dollars then you will have a great experience.

We chose this hotel for the rooftop pool and terrace area, which featured a lovely fireplace for the cool California nights. We had a very pleasant room with a four poster bed, decorated in Spanish colonial style. There is a complimentary wine hour from 5.30-6.30 and the white wine was delicious.

The rooftop pool was a lovely area but on both of our nights (we were only here for 2) we were refused entry to the terrace because of a private party and could not sit by the fire to enjoy the evening after our dinner. My husband appealed to the security guy (who was not that sympathetic to the residents; more in favour of the people in the private party) that we were residents but to no avail and we were banished to the pool side - however the party guests were then in our hot tub and so-called residents' area! When we got back to our room I rang reception to complain and Guest Services said they would pass my comments on - we heard nothing more and no apology. I do think residents should take priority and be able to use the amenities we had paid for - the hotel is quite expensive.

We had stayed in hotels this trip where the staff excelled; unfortunately this hotel was not one of them. A lesson in customer relations needed perhaps.

Anyway, on a positive note there was the Old Spanish Days Fiesta while we were there and the whole town was 'rocking' with the most wonderful atmosphere. The town is so pretty with spanish style architecture, a pier and lovely boardwalk to the marina where you can eat and drink also. Santa Barbara is California meets with Mediterranean! We did have a lovely time in Santa Barbara inspite of the hotel not making us feel as welcome as they could.

Room Tip: We stayed high floor - could get noisy if low level as hotel is surrounded by streets

A friendly and comfortable hotel although it was very busy and hectic on the Saturday night when we arrived. The rooms were comfortable and clean and the service was friendly, however, its location in the centre of Santa Barbara is its greatest asset. Plenty of shops and restaurants are within easy walking distance and a stroll down to the harbour and pier is within most people's capability. The food and the service at the restaurant was satisfactory but the personal touch was missing. We were asked to wait in the bar until a table became available and after 30 mins the barman had to remind them that we were waiting.
The rooftop area is popular but the pool is small and the sitting out area is limited. Valet parking only but the staff were very helpful.

A charming luxury hotel with fabulous rooftop. Pool and jacuzzi and you are surrounded by mountains. And when hungry can walk all over State Street for every type of restaurant - and shop up and down the street - from Marshall's (great buys) to more lux stores.

One caveat: make sure the power is on before you show up. Apparently the power grid hotel is in gets shut down occasionally. When we showed up we discovered this, but they booked us a room nearby and we returned the next day. Very glad we returned, too. Also, quite a singles scene in bar/restaurant on first floor - if you are interested.

Room Tip: we had room on 4th floor and it was fine - very quiet for sleeping.
