“Beautiful Guest House”
Reviewed 20 April 2009

My partner and I stayed at The Cheshire Cat for one night on our way down the Pacific coast.
The building is a very picturesque one, very well maintained and with a small but well manicured garden. We stayed in the Catarpillar room, which was a bit floral for my tastes, but was clean and smart and had a fantastic balcony overlooking the garden and neighbourhood. The Alice in Wonderland theme was really nice and gave the place a real warmth.
The staff were very helpful and friendly, and the breakfast was tasty and varied. There was a chance to chat with fellow guests with a glass of wine and some cheese in the early evening.
The location was very good and although it was a 30 minute walk to the pier, shops and restaurants were within easy walking distance.

Our second trip to Cheshire Cat - this time with the kids. We had a cottage across the street from the main house which was very roomy, clean and pretty reasonably priced. Had a hot tub in the backyard which we didn't get to use. Nice location, close to the downtown area off State Street. The staff were helpful and flexible. We stayed on a weeknight for one night and breakfast was "continental" - left a lot to be desired. My only criticism, though.

We stayed here President's day weekend (Saturday-Monday). Overall the inn is very nice, but a bit pricey. But then again, what do you expect from Santa Barbara? Good points: Beautiful grounds, very spacious room (we were in the white rabbit suite), excellent food (we had both the full breakfast on sunday and the continental breakfast on Monday - the continental breakfast was really a complete meal, top points for this), excellent location (walk to State Street). Minuses: no place to put your toiletries (pedestal sink), and price. After the first evening I was going to mention the lack of friendliness upon arrival - but the innkeeper was at both breakfasts and she was quite nice those two mornings. Overall, if you have the bucks to spend, go ahead!

We had a wonderful stay at the Cheshire Cat Inn in Santa Barbara. I was really impressed with how well kept and clean the rooms were. The little touches were quite welcome, too, especially since the price was about the same as most motels in the area. (We booked a King sized room with a dinner package at Bouchon.) They had oversized bath towels, proper toilet paper, wifi internet access, flat panel TV, and nice terrycloth robes in our room. The furniture and linens were in excellent shape, and there were wonderful homey touches all over the room--fresh roses, antique furniture, a journal that other guests have written in for the room. The rooms were VERY quiet. We had a street facing room, and until we opened the window, we didn't hear it. There was another couple in a nearby room, and we never heard them, either.

They had cookies out for whenever you wanted a snack, wine and hors d'oeuvres at 5pm, coffee in the early morning, and a nice spread for continental breakfast. Breakfast was a selection of hard boiled eggs, cinnamon bread, English muffins, fruit, fruit compote, an assortment of cereals and oatmeal, juice, and yogurt. Admittedly, it's not a "cooked" breakfast, like at other B&B's, but that was not a surprise, as it is stated on their literature and online that weekday morning breakfast is a continental breakfast.

We were very close to downtown, and were able to walk everywhere we wanted to go. We considered taking the trolley (which provides very cheap transportation up and down the main street) but it was a very nice day, and the walk was welcome.

The staff were quite courteous, helpful, and very friendly. It seemed like they were always there, but never in your way.

My husband and I stayed at the Cheshire Cat Inn on a recent trip to California that included two nights in Santa Barbara. We are not B&B people but the great reviews on this site convinced me to be adventurous and book with the inn. The inn seemed very pricey but I found availability in the least expensive room and figured we didn't need all the bells and whistles. Oh boy! As soon as we opened the door I regretted my decision! The room was minuscule!! I was immediately claustrophobic. And even if it had been a larger space, the amenities weren't that great. The bed was hard and the bathroom was cramped and the sink was right next to my head in the main part of the room! Even the shampoo and soap in the shower were cheap and unappealing. How difficult is it to include slightly nicer products? It's these little details that separate a great place from a so-so place.

I realize that all these issues might be considered by some to be the "charms" of staying at a B&B, but I was far from charmed. The inn was totally empty the first night we were there. I mean, we literally had the entire place to ourselves which worked out but I almost expected the inn keeper to offer to upgrade our room seeing as how no other guests were staying there. Nope. The selling feature of the room we stayed in was the fireplace. Using it meant that our room was filled with fas fumes and was made even hotter than the dry 85 degrees the inn keeper seemed to have cranked the furnace to. The next morning I thought I would at least be treated to a great breakfast. The reviews on here touted a great spread. It was the saddest continental breakfast. I mean, a three star hotel would have given us a better breakfast for FREE and at a B&B, I know that we are paying for this meal. It was really disappointing.

Our second night was just as cramped and uncomfortable and the second breakfast was even worse. The shining highlight of our stay was the vouchers we received to dinner and lunch as part of a mid-week incentive pack. These were lovely meals and lessened the blow of a pricey and disappointing stay.

The grounds were very nice as was the staff but next time I'm in Santa Barbara I will be staying else where.

This Inn is an amazing place to stay in the beautiful city of Santa Barbara.

Beautiful rooms. We stayed in the Queen of Hearts room and loved soaking in the jacuzzi every night. The decor was tasteful and the bed was firm and comfortable. Best room I've stayed in period!

The staff was wonderfully helpful and very genuine. The breakfast kept us well fueled for the day.

The location is amazing because it's off the main street in a quiet part of town but just a few blocks from the historic downtown area (state street).

Pricing was also amazing during the weekday. I was there on business and it seemed like there were several repeat guests staying at the Cheshire Cat Inn while we were there.

Book this property and you cannot be disappointed. Thanks Trip Advisor!!! (again)
