“Just dreamy at the Cheshire Cat”
Reviewed 24 July 2007

Wanting a special way to celebrate our 15th anniversary, I found the Cheshire Cat Inn using TripAdvisor. I booked a weekend vacation and was in heaven from the moment my husband and I arrived! The grounds were gorgeous with all the trees, fountain, lots of flowers and rosebushes. The houses were just beautiful!!! We stayed in the Alice Suite and were very pleased with the room. The bed was comfortable and the balcony was so inviting, i read and took a nap on the lounge chair in the evening. The breakfasts were delicious and the evening snacks were tasty as well. The innkeeper Bharti is a gem of a gal, lots of info on the town and restaurants. I also loved reading the journals left in the room from the previous visitors. From begining to end our stay was relaxing. Santa Barbara is a great place to visit, lots to see and do and the Cheshire Cat is close to it all. Our stay was so fabulous, that i have already booked another weekend away for next year and i know we will have a great time again..... ;)

We spent one night at this B & B. The setting is lovely, a restored Victorian in a nice, but heavily trafficked neighborhood. The staff seamed friendly enough, but it didn't have the same touch we are used to in a B&B. The sheets were no better than Motel 6 grade, stiff & scratchy industrial white sheets, with the double top sheet on each side of the blanket. The towels were dry and somewhat threadbare also. The evening hors d’oeurves were Costco purchased stale crackers, with the Kirkland stamp on them, and hummus, with a small plate of vegi's with sour cream, no dip mix added. The breakfast was very disappointing; since we were there on a weekday it was continental. The place was almost full, but no hot breakfast. Small boxes of cereal, Rice Crispies, Raisin Bran, packets of instant oatmeal, Costco bagels & English Muffins, a nice fruit salad. What was most rude, was that the kitchen staff could be seen making stuffed french toast and other breakfast items for the next day's breakfast, but they couldn't bother to feed the days residents a hot breakfast. We didn't get any special deal or price for staying on a weekday, so why the difference in breakfast? We choose to stay in B&B for those special touches, none of which this particular establishment offered. We expected more for $200 a night. We'll stay elsewhere next time!!!

We discovered the Cheshire Cat several years ago, while our daughter was a student at UCSB. That was our lodging of choice when visiting the Santa Barbara area (one of our favorite weekend spots) and is still our first choice of places to stay in the area. The caring, family atmosphere always makes us feel refreshed and we return home invigorated. The staff is terrific; Bharti always tends to our every need. Thank you, Cheshire Cat, for giving us so many memorable times!

My stay at the Cheshire Cat was a very positive experience. The house & room was excellent as was the food, but nothing compared to the friendly and helpful staff. They made my trip to Santa Barbara a memorable one. I would definitely recommend the B & B to anyone who was visiting the Santa Barbara area. Be sure not to miss the wine and cheese spread in in the garden in late afternoon.

A beautiful cozy inn with amazing service. B, the manager, treated us just like family. Our room was wonderful; big comfy bed and nice pillows and an awesome jacuzzi tub! Wine and hors d'oeuvres were well done--you're a great cook, B!!! The property is so meticulously taken care of and well done. Beautiful landscaping with grass, trees, flowers, the fountain. It really is a vacation in and of itself. And the fact that it's in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara makes it worth every penny. It was our second honeymoon and wow, did this hotel make it fabulous!! Oh, and I cannot forget the breakfast brought to our room each morning. YUM!! The staff is so friendly and so accommodating. I recommend this place over and over again, you will not be disappointed!

  • Liked — The service and the location.
  • Disliked — If you don't like old style victorian decor in an old house, it may be way too much for you.

If you are looking for a B&B experience in Santa Barbara, Cheshire Cat is a good choice. The Alice in Wonderland decor is tastefully done throughout the premises and the gardens are a peaceful oasis. We especially enjoyed our stay since we had the run of the place with a private breakfast served to us in the dining room as well as a private wine/cheese hour enjoyed in the gardens. The hosts are attuned to providing as much/as little interaction the guests desire. We stayed in the Caterpillar suite which I recommend because of the private balcony. The Cheshire is located on a corner lot and a busy street runs along the side of the main house (if you are sensitive to noise, this should be considered and you should contact the Cheshire directly to reserve rooms not facing the street - unfortunately, the gardens also experience some traffic noise). Overall, the place is conveniently located near State Street in a residential area and provides a tranquil place to enjoy a SB stay.
