We have been coming back to the SYR for nearly a decade. For us, it is the American equivalent of the Aman hotels in Asia; on every occasion reliably delivering a beautifully styled room, hotel and experience without being formal and stuffy. The hill-side French provincial style cottages and gardens are absolutely perfect to relax for a few days where the temperature is a little less aggressive than down on the coast or in-land. The service is flawless.

The SYR has been on the 'mountain' side amongst celebrity homes above Montecito since Victorian times. The Kennedy's honeymooned here, an ocean view cottage, which is available to guests, as is the larger Ty Warner cottage.

This time we stayed in Fig, one of a collection of 5 cottages higher on the hill, just by the pool. We don't love Fig as much as some of the other cottages but in most hotels this would be a truly exceptional room. The cottages are all individually decorated with an joyfully eclectic mixture of furniture and furnishings which you can look at on their web site. The rooms just feel like somewhere you want to live and because of this we usually stay 3 days and hardly venture out.

Something else that is unusual about this place - everything in the room works and is simple to use. No baffling mood light settings, silent fridge and air con, large closet, electric start fire, etc - all work as you would want it to.

There is an exceptional restaurant here. We have not visited it yet, preferring to eat in our cottage, but the food is great. Its expensive so you might want to consider eating off the pet menu - Salmon and rice for dogs is only $16.

Stay here. You can't go wrong

Room Tip: Willow has a spectacular living room and a large terrace overlooking the creek. Eucalyptus has a...

Well I call myself a hotel snob - this hotel must be the nicest place I've ever stayed at!! I was slightly apprehensive travelling with three teen boys, but they LOVED it. We took a two bedroom cottage for three nights and frankly I could have moved right in there!! The whole place is serene, quiet, peaceful and really quaint. Pefect. Food was fabulous and to be honest we were the most well behaved and quiet people in the restaurant and I was worried it would be too snooty!!! There is a small gym, a lovely pool. The kids worked out and nobody batted an eyelid. Ideally I would recommend it for couples to go and chill and catch up on life, but I am so happy I chose to stay there - we went out during the day to santa barbara since it's not a hotel with much to do in the day and that was perfect. The whole place is a gardeners paradise - everywhere you look there are herbs, fruits trees, flowers - i dream of it!! Now my DREAM is to build a replica of our cottage for myself!!

Room Tip: There are only about 40 cottages on premises and you can really look it up on google earth to decide...

Everything is not just wonderful, but thoughtful and singular. One of the stand alones. Listing every detail wouldn't do the medley justice. If you're going to be in the area, stay outside of Santa Barbara proper in Montecito and appreciate the depth the region has to offer.

Knowing this would be our last trip sans bebe for a number of years, deciding where to stay for our babymoon was an agonizing decision. My husband and I could not be more pleased with our choice to stay at San Ysidro Ranch. Since we booked one of the more modest rooms the property has to offer I was mildly concerned we would be viewed by the staff as second class citizens. That couldn't have been further from the truth. Even though a couple of the hotel guests were major celebrities the staff were as attentive to us as if we were the only couple on property. The service was genuine, warm, helpful and not at all pretentious. The Peony room where we stayed was delightfully cozy and comfortable. Owing to the peace and quiet and gorgeous surroundings, I believe a few days at this property is more relaxing than a week elsewhere. I would be remiss not to mention the quality of the food. We thoroughly enjoyed the assorted fresh breads with our breakfast every morning and the special meals we were treated to at Stonehouse each evening (which included some produce grown in the beautiful garden on site!) Truly a blissful experience.

My husband and I had planned a couple's getaway at the Four Seasons Biltmore. We lasted there one night and got on the phone to find a better, more private place to stay. Luckily, a friend had recommended this place to us just before we left. Luckier still, they had a cottage available. We were a little anxious about their pet-friendly policy, not being pet people ourselves. But we were desperate to get out of the Biltmore and hoping to salvage our trip. When we got to the Ranch, we were instantly relieved -- the place is just a few minutes from downtown SB but so secluded and so stunning, we knew we'd found what will become one our our special places. We were assigned the Churchill cottage and it was perfect - charming without being kitschy, great big canopy bed, beautiful bathroom with both indoor and outdoor shower - heaven! If you're a fan of the Auberge du Soleil in Napa or the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur, this is your kind of place. Children are allowed here, which makes the vibe a little more family-oriented. I got the impression most kids there were attending weddings on site. We only saw one dog and no evidence of pet fur or dander in our cottage. We'll be back!

Room Tip: My guess is there is not a bad room to be had. Churchill Cottage was absolutely fantastic but I ove...

We visited the San Ysidro Ranch in February of this year and look forward to returning in the future. It is charming, warm and inviting in a Ralph Lauren kind of way. The accommodations are in cabins that are beautifully appointed. Ours had a fireplace and when we returned in the evenings after dinner, the fireplace was going and the bed had been turned down. What a romantic setting! We had breakfast in our room one morning and lunch and dinner in their main restaurant there. The food was excellent and the service warm, attentive and friendly. It also has an interesting history. JFK and Jackie spent their honeymoon there and Vivien Leigh and Laurence Olivier were married there. The surrounding gardens are gorgeous and each cabin has such a sense of privacy. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit there and would highly recommend it!
