“Frank's the Star”
Reviewed 24 May 2009

We spent three wonderful nights in Santa Barbara in April. Having spent three weeks on the road we badly needed a break. The Inn at East beach was not our first choice but tempted by the reviews we decided to book on sight. The Hotel is comfortable but not luxurious but has a very spacious kitchenette and is within two minutes of the beach. There is a very nice (and deep) pool in the centre of a bright courtyard. What the hotel has in spades is hospitality. I don't usually name staff but Frank, one of the managers is a natural hotel keeper - attentive, friendly and welcoming ; full of helpful advice (such as get the 9am whale watching boat (35 people) rather than the 12pm boat (160 people) he made the stay that extra special. The chest full of buckets and beach mats meant that the boys could go mad on the beach and the parents could chill out. A real gem.

We have stayed at The Inn at East Beach three times now and feel as if we have found our Santa Barbara "home away from home." We orignially landed there after reading a review in Travel and Leisure. Our hosts, Frank and Linda are what makes the Inn a remarkable and unique place. The rooms are basic, have nice conviencies and are very CLEAN! The location is exquisite... a short walk to the beach. Parking is easy. And the morning continental breakfast is fantastic! Frank and Linda endeavor to ensure their guests have a true "Santa Barbara" experience so the pastries, coffee, cookies are all from local businesses. We specifically visited the coffee company so we could bring home some of the excellent java we enjoyed while staying at the Inn. We are always greeted with a big smile and warm handshake! The Inn at East Beach is the only place we stay when visiting beautiful Santa Barbara!!!!

If you take away the disinfectant smell in the room, and take away the thundering herd of elephants in the room above us, and take away the sound of Niagra Falls rushing into your room when the room next to us turned on the shower....it was great. Oh yes, that was until we realized an hour outside of Santa Barbara that we had forget to turn the room key in. We called Frank right away and told him we would drop it in the mail the next morning and he said it was to late and that he had to charge my credit card $25.
We would never stay there again.

Stayed at the Inn a few years ago and had a pleaseant experience at the Inn up until the day of check-out.
Lets start with the Inn/motel first. Decent rooms, nice pool, o.k. continental breakfast and no problems at all with our room. Our stay would have been nice too, that is until we checked out. I had the room key fastened to my key-chain so that I would not loose it due to the $50 dollar charge for lost keys. Well, at check out I completeley forgot that it needed to be returned. Not once at check out did Frank mention the key. Anyways, about an hour later I noticed that the key had not been returned, at which point I drove back to the Inn to return it. By that time Frank had mentioned that he had already paid a "locksmith" to come out and make a new key. Yeah right, well sufficed to say he had already charged our card $50 for the key and refused to credit the money back to us, even though we returned the key. Frank, everything was great until you got greedy. Well, now I tell all my friends about that experience and recommend other hotels instead. We travel to S.B. at least twice if not 3 times a year and the Inn is the only place and the only time that I felt cheated. I tell very few people about my good hotel experiences, but I tell everyone about my bad ones.
Moral of the story, don't forget to return the key if you stay at this Inn.

This is without a doubt the best deal in Santa Barbara. Frank, the owner/manager, has the gift of making you feel special. His opening line," I see you brought your daughter along", is to me as my wife stands by grinning from ear to ear!! The property is very well kept, pool is heated, rooms are clean with a fireplace, and a great breakfast w/ fresh muffins, hard-boiled eggs, fruit, etc. BTW Frank takes personal pride the coffee he serves!! A true value, at least in Feb. The low budget chains were much more $$$.

After searching several websites for a budget friendly hotel near the beaches, I came across this one and booked through the hotel's website, with their "catch a break" special, which equated to 25% off the standard rate.

We stayed here for 2 nights in February and were very pleased with everything- the cleanliness, the room's size, the location, and the free breakfast. Free parking was also a plus. Our room had 2 queen beds, a fireplace, TV, fridge, coffee maker, a small table and chairs, and even a fan (which came in handy one night to drown out loud music coming from a nearby street). The reception area has many guides and visitor info, and the manager/owner was also helpful in making recommendations.

The beach is right across the street, which has a pedestrian/bike path which we ran and walked both days. It was about a 10 to 15 minute walk to the pier/ the end of State Street from the hotel. There weren't any nearby restaurants, but that was fine since we were on State Street or the beach anyway.

This motel is in a good location and the manager is so helpful and welcoming which outweighs any disappointment with the standard of the rooms themselves. We stayed in one of the cheaper rooms which was large but quite dated and a little dark. However while we were there the manager told us about the planned upgrade which looked really cool and will definitely improve this hotel. The pool area is not that attractive but perfectly adequate and the laundry facility and breakfast was a bonus. The beach was a short walk away and the town centre a pleasant stroll along the sea front. Santa Barbara itself is lovely with fantastic sunsets and great shopping and nightlife and I would definitely recommend the Inn at East Beach if you are looking for an affordable and friendly place to lay your head.
