“Comfortable beds, great location”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 14 November 2007

The H. I. Express had the MOST comfortable beds, multiple pillows (soft or firm stitched on every pillowcase). There was a mini fridge in the room, flat screen TV, complimentary breakfast and the staff was wonderful. This is also a smoke-free hotel. I was really surprised with everything, as I never thought too highly about the Holiday Inn chain. They even made the microwave available for my use.
I came to town for outpatient surgery. I had originally been directed to Encina Lodge near the surgical center. When I called for a reservation there, they were rude and not the least bit accommodating. I even spoke with the manager and he couldn't have cared less! I'm glad I chose the Holiday Inn Express as I met someone else who had stayed at the Encina Lodge prior to surgery and they were VERY disappointed and said the staff had a "take it or leave it" attitude and the rooms were very small and dinghy.
For the same price, it was great to be in town and walk around the shops the night before surgery and with enough painkillers it was nice to take a short walk in the afternoon after surgery. Again, I can't say enough good things about the hotel staff at Holiday Inn Express. This has really changed my opinion about the whole chain!

  • Liked — convenient location and wonderful staff
  • Disliked — the walls were a little thin but the hotel has a "good neighbor" policy and will remove a guest who is disturbing others.

This is a cute boutique type hotel at a reasonable price. Service was good and hotel was very clean. I definitely would stay here again!

Here are the good things about this hotel: It was clean and the location was convenient to State Street. Other than that, the hotel was terrible. The staff was incredibly rude and threatened to kick us out if we got another complaint for being loud. The problem was that the complaints they said they had on us for being loud were during times that no one from our group was even at the hotel. We were also in our beds at night talking when a hotel staff knocked on our door and told us we had to stop talking - he said the hotel didn't have sound-proofed walls and we couldn't talk. Apparently this did not apply to the people who wake up early in the morning - we were woken up at 6A by people coughing, talking and moving around in other rooms. Also, we could hear every movement made by the people in the room above us. In addition, the maid knocked on our door at 7:30A to see if she could clean our room. This was on a Saturday morning. We complained about all of this and the hotel manager said all of this was acceptable. Despite the lack of care by the staff, the hotel is just loud. Who builds a hotel without sound proofing it? Don't stay here - it is expensive for what you don't get and you will be more tired at the end of your stay because of all the noise.

Couldn't believe this was a Holiday Inn Express! The room was a little on the smaller size, but for two people on a romantic vacation it was just right. The bed was sooo comfortable. The TV was a flat-screen plasma and my husband just about died when he saw it! They are currently working on updating the hotel (there is a note in the room saying so). We must have gotten one of the newer rooms. The Wi-Fi signal was very strong everywhere in our room. It was very clean and the staff was very nice. The breakfast was awesome! It is a little ways off the beach, but we easily walked to it. Also, it's very close to many great restaurants. (We highly recommend the Enterprise Fish, Co.). For a very expensive town, the room was a great price. I would sure rather pay that cheaper price and walk to the beach than pay way more for "ocean front view." (which by the way in Santa Barbara means it's across the road). It was a little noisy towards the evening, so if you have children ask for a room on the opposite side of the building from the entrance). But it wasn't soo much noise that we couldn't sleep. Overall, this was a great and very pleasant experience.

Recently stayed one night in this hotel for a work function. Thought it was a great stay in a good location and very clean.
Some opinions:

Rooms - Not the largest but newly updated and very well done. As people have stated before the beds are AMAZING and the flat screen TVs are nice. We had a room directly on the Main St (Haley) so there was some noise and music at night but nothing excessive.

Parking - Convenient, $7.00 a night on the property.

Amenities - No real amenities at this location which maybe it’s only downside. If you are looking for a resort location then you may prefer to be closer to the water (pool, etc.) The hotel does offer free wireless, a nice veranda on the second floor to enjoy and pretty good hot breakfast included.

Location - Great - Just a couple blocks off the freeway so easy in and easy out. It is only block off of State St right in the center of town so nothing is more than a 10 minute walk.

Suggested places to check out:

Chad's Restaurant – A really warm and inviting place to eat two blocks from the hotel in a historic Victorian building.

Pascucci - Italian bistro directly on State St with outdoor dining and local wine selections – good for lunch.

Last weekend we spent three nights at the Holiday Inn. We arrived around 2:30am and I called ahead to let them know we would be arriving late. They were waiting for us and had everything ready so that we could go on up to our room. The front desk staff was very nice and friendly. The room is on the smaller side, but that is typical with older properties. It was furnished nice and the bathroom was cute and clean. They had a flat screen TV in the room and a fridge which is nice. The street noise was a little loud (third floor), but not enough to keep us awake. It was great to be able to open the big windows since the weather is so beautiful in Santa Barbara.

The hotel is in the perfect location for all the shopping and restaurants on State Street. It is also inexpensive and easy to park at the hotel. The complimentary breakfast each morning is really nice and is even a little upgraded from the standard continental. The woman who takes care of the breakfast in the morning is so nice and friendly, she even ran out to get my husband a paper since they had run out! She was very helpful.

For the money and the location, this hotel is a great choice.

We had a week long trip in CA and this was the worst hotel we stayed at. Ok, the positives- the location is awesome and it doesn't look like a holiday inn. That's sort of it.

The room was terribly small and dated. The staff was really lax and couldn't have cared less about customer service on any level. Huge difference with this hotel from the others we stayed at. Disappointing.

Here is the worst part. Our small bathroom was leaking from the ceiling. Really badly. You'd get soaked everytime you went in to do anything. Of course we called down to get some help with this. A security person came by and basically told us that was normal activity from turning on the AC. ???? They had no other rooms to go to that night. It was disgusting. My makeup was getting ruined etc.. Anyway the hotel really didn't care, and told us it was normal. We couldn't wait to get out of there.

We cancelled our second night and moved it to the next hotel on our stay.

The location is great, service stunk, room stunk. Would definitely not go back. I would have called a manager but we were in a rush the next day and didn't feel like dealing with it at the time.
