“lovely surprise”

I was so pleasantly surprised to find this to be not the usual fare, but a historic downtown hotel, that was clean, comfortable and well run. I would stay there again and happily so. the breakfasts need improvement but with a zillion restaurants within two blocks that is not really a concern.

My husband and I just returned from a 4-night stay at this hotel and it was fabulous! The staff is extremely friendly, the hotel is very clean and the location is perfect! We were able to walk up and down State Street (and not worry about parking), walk to the wharf and beach. We had a spectacular view from our windows (which actually opened) and the rate was very reasonable. I highly recommend this place!

Room Tip: I recommend the mountain view.

This hotel is great!!! The location is perfect - close to beach, shops on State St (one block away), markets and other convenience stores within walking distance. The hotel is immaculate, staff is very friendly and polite. Free breakfast was good. We brought our bikes and had fun riding as well as the location is central to getting to the beach trail or just riding around town. We will definitely stay here again when we come back to Santa Barbara. Holiday Inn Express hotels always come through for us!

What attracted my wife and me to this hotel was it's location to downtown Santa Babara and to the beach. On these points it didn't disappoint. But you pay (for us $200 per night) for what felt like a roadside motel. We were lured by the "historic downtown hotel" marketing and for us, this was simply marketing. Granted, our room was smaller than others I had seen (shoebox like) and we were on the first floor. We were woken up at night by the feet of children stomping on the "historic" floors (read: our ceiling) on more than one ocasion. This was disappointing.

We knew we weren't going to take part in the all inclusive breakfast before we arrived and this played out as planned, but I am sure for some, this is a draw and makes it a better value. We weren't into this and it was the noise down the hall that would have been difficult to manage through we had not been early risers on the trip.

Our room wasn't as clean as we liked, having our towels removed and not replaced after day one, even though we followed conservation directions and didn't place on the floor. We also were surprised to find someone elses banana peels in our ice bucket on day two. These were just a few signs of poor attention to detail and general untidiness.

Note: $9 extra per day to park.

With all these minor gripes and inconveniences, we must say the staff was quite friendly and helpful and we felt welcomed guests.

The customer service, especially Hotel Manager, Douglas Anderson, is equal to what one would expect from a "five star" hotel. His personal care and concern for my trip was above and beyond what I expected. Mr. Anderson has made a repeat customer out of me and I highly recommend this hotel to anyone looking for a nice and super convenient location in downtown Santa Barbara!

We were doing just 1 Saturday night in Santa Barbara, CA and I choose this hotel since the price was equitable for the area, I like the brand and the breakfasts are pretty good! Plan on valet for your car, parking is limited here. The hotel is small and cute. It is in a nice central spot next to State Street which is the main shopping & dinning drag. We didn't get to time a walk to the beach due to pouring rain but I don't think it would be too far. Our room was tiny and there wasn't much space beyond the bed area but it was clean and comfy. But quiet this building is not, we could hear our neighbors all around and about 1:30am-2:30am when the night lifers turn in, they were stomping above, bouncing next door, and quite chatty in the corridor. Maybe that's the norm for a Saturday night and the rest of the week would be more restful, but it'll probably stop me from picking this spot for a future stay. Morning breakfast was your standard fare for HI with eggs, bacon, toast/bagels/muffins, yogurt, cereal, pancakes, and of course cinnamon rolls.

Room Tip: Can only say, maybe ask for the top floor. We were in the second floor and the floor above was pret...
