Owner description: Market Forays offers Locavore Cooking Classes and Culinary Adventures for leisure travelers. Sustainable Team Building Events for Corporate Groups. Private Chef Services. Our classes are built around the freshest seasonal local ingredients, combined with a playful attitude that draws on my French upbringing, enriched by the cuisines of the many countries I have visited and by California's own multicultural richness. The preferences and restrictions of my guests are built into the day's lesson plan to ensure that everyone enjoys the experience. Sample menus can be viewed on the Market Forays website. Classes are hands-on, and a printed recipe guide is provided to each guest. The goal is not to impress you with my skills, it is to help you realize your own abilities. Saturday Market Forays classes begin at 8 in the morning at the harbor, continue on to the farmers market, and then we cook and share a feast. Class wraps up around 3:30 pm. Cost is $145 per person. Private classes available during the week, advance reservation is required.

Our Market Forays Cooking Class exceeded all expectations we had when we made our reservation. The class consisted of five of us, my wife, our daughter, her husband, our adult son and myself. The day started at the Santa Barbara Harbor where we were met by Chef Julia, Laurence Hauben's daughter. She greeted us with a warm smile and a basket of freshly baked and very yummy French Butter Cakes, (Madeleines), She then proceeded to introduce us to some of the local fishermen and acquired the seafood we would be preparing that evening. She educated us on the sustainability practices the local fishermen are using. We then went to the Saturday Farmers' Market to obtain the fresh fruits, vegetables and herbs for the evening meal. As we walked through the market, Julia introduced us to a number of fruits and vegetables we have never seen before and creative ways to prepare them. Our last stop was to a local cheese shop where we sampled many types of cheeses in order to decide which ones to enjoy with our evening meal. We then had the afternoon open to see some of the sights of Santa Barbara. At 4:30 PM we arrived at the Haubens lovely country french style home for what turned out to be a fun filled evening of hands on cooking accompanied by some very helpful and practical cooking techniques. We had dinner on a beautifully set dining table decorated with fresh flowers. I can't say enough great things about Julia. She was so friendly, warm, informative and knew so much about the culinary world. It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Because the Haubens request from their students, what types of food they would like to prepare, each cooking class can be different, so we plan to do this again when we next visit Santa Barbara.

My husband and I are from Canada and we did this class one day as part of our California honeymoon and we are SO glad we did! We were in Santa Barbara for 3 days and cooking at Laurence's house was definitely a highlight of our stay! She is incredibly talented and has a gorgeous home. We learned so much from her (both me, who rarely cooks, and my husband who has been cooking his entire life) ... we were really impressed that it didn't matter what level cook you are ... you will learn something new regardless. We cooked with another wonderful couple (that we met that day) and then all sat down and ate together at her dining room table. It was truly an unforgettable experience, we would love to come back and do it again! Thank you Laurence.

This is a wonderful experience that anyone who appreciates learning new things, the art of cooking, the beautiful fruits and vegetables of the Farmers Market, exquisite cheeses and wines, fresh and local crab, and the camaraderie around the dinner table. We plan to take this class at least once per year with our family because each time we go, we learn something new and the food we help prepare just keeps getting better. Chef Laurence was so patient with my 16 year old daughter and my 13 year old niece when teaching how to prepare the duck and how to properly zest the lime. We will have these memories with our family to cherish for years to come! We can't wait to see what Menu we will prepare next time. Thank you so much Chef Laurence!

Whether you want to fill a happy day with a different - culinary - insight into a great coastal city (Santa Barbara) or you are an experienced cook, food-lover, writer of unique experiences, or wannabe, the knowledgeable and responsive cook/guide Laurence Hauben will surprise you with the bounty and generosity of this region. Choose the kinds of foods you want to learn to prepare (one of mine was sea urchin, which are plentiful and delicious out of coastal Santa Barbara) and do so on your own or with others. Start at the Saturday market pick out some cheese and wine, and spend the whole day cooking. Then dine al fresco. I can't wait to go back.

Laurence is a masterful French chief and teacher. She began our day by meeting at the Santa Barbara harbor dock where the fisherman had just brought in their fresh catches. We visited with Stephanie the urchin diver and tasted urchin fresh from the Pacific! We also talked talked with the lobsterman, Jim the rock crab fisherman and the and a fisherman who had some beautiful fresh caught halibut. Laurence selected a 22 lbs halibut that became our main course later in the day.

The next stop was at the Santa Barbara farmers market. We spent a wonderful time browsing the market vendors for a variety of fresh vegetables, fruits, nuts other items. This farmers market rivals those that we visited in Provence!

The next stop was at C'est Cheese shop for multiple tastings and to purchase cheeses for Laurence's meal and for our own nibbles for the rest of the week.

Next on to the main event! In a beautiful gourmet kitchen overlooking the Pacific, we spent the next couple of hours learning and cooking with two other couples and Laurence, our master French chief. We were served specially paired wines as the various courses were ready and also a glass or two just to complement the learning process!

The meal, wine and the good friendships developed where simply superb!! This day reminded us of a similar experience with Mama Agata in Ravello Italy.
