“California At Its Best!”
Reviewed 6 July 2013

Annual summer visit to this property. Located on main beach in Santa Cruz, it is special. Guests can swim in the pool or the walk on the beach --day or night. Or walk to the Boardwalk and play fun games. Or dine on the Wharf jutting out into the bay. Or dine at Aquarius, a fine dining restaurant at the hotel. Or dine in Santa Cruz or Monterey or Carmel. Point is: Everything a person wishes to do when visiting California.
And, the staff is friendly and competent. The rooms clean -- all with great views to the bay. One miscue -- our grandchild's pancakes were not "chocolate pancakes" from room service. Vincent -- a key player in our visit -- rescued us with skill and aplomb. We will return next summer.

Room Tip: The best rooms are in the tower. Great views of the bay.

Thank you so much for your 5 star review! Vinny does a great job for us at Aquarius and the pool, and I appreciate you taking time to mention his stellar service. We look forward to having you back to experience the same great service from not only Vinny, but all of our other employees!

Dream Inn is located right on the water. The views from the room are beautiful and conveniently located to walking to the Boardwalk and parts of the town. The rooms are clean and ours came with a balcony with table and chairs to sit out on. Friday night there was a band playing at the boardwalk which was great to hear from our room. Sadly they do not care if people smoke in their hotel. No where are there signs that this is a non smoking hotel in the room or on the patio. We were on the 10th floor in the "cloud" room and twice the guest below us were smoking so their smoke went right up into our balcony into our room which ruins everything about the view and ocean breeze for me. Ended up calling front desk 4 times and finally checked out early. A sign in the room or out on the balcony stating their non smoking policy I felt would have prevented this from happening and ruining our stay. Very disappointing. Manager offered to move us but if they allow people to smoke on their balcony I didn't see what moving us was going to do. Upon checking out no notes on my account about speaking to manager. I mentioned her name wrong and was told there was no one by that name. I then asked the managers name which was very close to what I had said. I mentioned maybe a sign would help and was told there is a sign in every room.

This guest has been contacted by management to express our concern over the issues raised in this review. The Dream Inn is indeed a non-smoking facility with stiff penalites for those who violate our policy. We take issues that impinge upon other's experiences at the Dream Inn seriously, and we will redouble our efforts to ensure that this experience remains an isolated one.

This used to be a great place to stay, but it has got old and needs some up dating. You can't beat the view, it is 5 star, but the rest is 3 star. The food is ok, as well as the service.
The staff does try hard to make your stay a very good one.

I stayed here for my birthday last Winter, and I cannot speak highly enough about my experience at Dream Inn Santa Cruz! As you might be able to tell by my other reviews, I am totally a fan of the JDV brand, but Dream Inn is no exception.

The most obvious asset of this hotel is that every single room has an ocean view. Even though we were in a basic Queen room, our room was on (I think) the 7th floor, and had an amazing view of the main beach in SC. I've been to Santa Cruz many times, but never in Winter, and wow was it trippy to see the desolate beach, taken over by a clan of bored seagulls. It was actually really peaceful to sit out on the (covered) balcony and watch the quiet beach and waves rolling in while we drank our wine. The furniture is brightly colored and funky. The room was BIG, the largest room I've stayed in in Santa Cruz. There is SANTA CRUZ SALT WATER TAFFY in the room, along with a full assortment of snacks and drinks. Heater was really strong, which was essential since it was cold out. The pool area is rad and is right in front of the beach, we were the only ones out there in Winter though. The staff are awesome, from all the desk staff (special thanks to Dan for the birthday wine!), to the bartender, to the housekeeping staff. We had a great hike over Natural Bridges, and walked to downtown where there are tons of funky crystal, art, clothing, and beachy headshops. We also walked a short ways to our concert at the Catalyst. The boardwalk is essentially right next door, and there is also a cool beach bar called Ideal Bar and Grill across the street.

Thanks so much to all the staff at Dream Inn. Honestly, this is the best place you can stay in Santa Cruz. It's expensive during the Summer, but you cannot find another hotel like this.

Room Tip: Even if you book a standard room, if you request a higher floor, they'll try to put you pretty h...

The Dream Inn is an interesting hotel. It seems confused sometimes on what it wants to be. Does it want to be a full 4 star hotel, or a rambunctious family hotel or a romantic getaway or a funky quirky hotel. They seem to try to do all of those things but some fall a little short.
The hotel is funky, with a fun interiors, our room was comfortable and colorful. Everyroom has a terrific view of the bay and of the Santa Cruz municipal wharf. We also could see the boardwalk amusement park. View was hands down the greatest thing.
This is an expensive place to stay, but you are paying for the location and view, not necessarily the service. There were a lot of families, which is fine with us, the pool however can get very busy and very overrun with kids. The services falls a little flat starting with your car. It is very confusing and chaotic when you pull up. There were cars parked every which way and people running around with no idea on what they are doing. But once that was taken care of things got better. The other very strange thing was the pool. They have a pool attendant, however they were hardly ever there. They were always out of pool towels and even when we asked the front desk they said they would drop some off, they never did.
The restaurant was okay, the drinks were fun and seasonal and expensive, but it was nice. the food was good and our breakfast was terrific.
You have to pay for parking, which was expected, it is 25.00 a day. all in all it was a fun trip. There are lots of family's which was fun, but can be overwhelming if you want it more quiet and romantic. The beach is literally steps away and the view was worth it all.
There is a near by trolley that runs in the summer that takes you down town. it is 25 cents one way. It was very easy to get downtown to eat and shop then return to the beach for the rest of the day.

Room Tip: The rooms by the pool could be very loud and have little privacy. We were in the tower and had terr...

This is the only Hotel in Santa Cruz, CA that sits right on the beach. You don't have to look past the flow of steady cars between you and the ocean. The pool was warm and popular with an awesome view of the surf. The Bartender (Jackie) was fun and very personable, spicy Bloody Mary's! I will be back.

Room Tip: ask for 6th floor or higher for the killer views!

Stayed 4 nights on a business trip and slept every night listening to the waves. The bed was very comfortable. The staff was always helpful and polite. Just after checking into my room, the front desk called to ask if I was satisfied with the room or needed anything. I was on the first floor and asked if there was a room available on a higher floor, "No Problem, We can do that". Within 10 minutes I was in a room that had the same great view of the ocean, just higher.
We held our meeting at the hotel and found the staff to be very responsive to our requests for AV, lunch and room temperature changes.
Will definitely stay here again if I get back to Santa Cruz for work or play.
