We tried La Posta again last year after a bad experience a few years ago and had several reasonably good meals there before this evening. Our experience there tonight, however, has turned us away for good. This is a shame, as we live quite close by and eat out enough that we are bored with most restaurants that we like in Santa Cruz.
To make a long story short, they ruined our date night by refusing to accommodate a minor request and then both the hostess and manager lied to us about the reason why; they both gave us different reasons and both stories were demonstrably false. After we complained to the manager, our meals were served and noticeably smaller (about half the size) and less well presented than the same dishes served to the tables around us. Variation in portion size is a reality in restaurants, but this seemed to clearly be retaliation for complaining, particularly since we saw the hostess and manager conferring in front of the kitchen staff.
To make matters worse, it seems that our initial treatment, being sat at a table right by the kitchen from which they refused twice to reseat us to one of the several other open tables, was likely at least partially discrimination. This place is popular with the middle-aged yacht club demographic, but one of us is dark-skinned and we gave a hispanic name to be notified when our table was available. We were then seated at four top by the kitchen and not one of several empty two tops on the far wall and, as we were told that these were "reserved", but the table we asked about was then given to another couple without reservations who arrived ten minutes after us. Having to look at them enjoying their dinner at the table we had requested, and more importantly, being lied to by the staff, ruined our night out.
The incident several years ago also involved poor customer service, as a complaint about the entree of one our party was brushed off by the server and then the manager, and they did nothing to remedy it, but instead made the person feel bad about raising the issue.
Won't be patronizing them or their sister restaurant, Soif, again, as management reflects ownership. It appears that they don't think they need our business and I'm sure that they will do fine with the yacht club and small plate food snob types anyway.
