LOVE this cool, hip and fun hotel!!! Stayed for the weekend and just happened to be the same weekend as their 1 year anniversary party. Did we luck out or what????? Free raw bar, endless yummy appetizers, free drinks and great music all night!! The staff are so friendly and excited about their amazing hotel, this is the only place I will ever stay in Santa Cruz!!

Room Tip: Pick a room above the pool

Dear Lisaafc2013,

Thank you so much for joining us during the first year Anniversary of Hotel Paradox. We had a great time throwing such a fun party! Thank you for your review and letting us know you had a good time with it, I think there were many people who enjoyed it. The party was a lot of planning, but so much fun for us to see everyone having a great time. Hopefully, you hit the Paradox Photo booth we set up for the event, all the pics are on our Facebook page if you want to check it out, feel free to take a look? The band just kept playing, and one of the artists from that night plays here every Wednesday night. Glad you were able to enjoy it. Thank you so much for the review and for staying with us. Just know, we do live it up every weekend, but we don't do that same party every weekend :)...

Thank you!

We stayed here recently for a gymnastics meet, so needless to say the kids were in tow. The rooms were nicely decorated and the bathroom was great. I especially liked the uplighting in the sleeping area (much nicer than standard overhead lighting), the flat screen TV set into the wall, the weathered planking as headboards, and the sliding door for the bathroom to save space. The beds with the real cushion tops were especially comfortable. The floors were a bit sticky, as could be expected in a beach area with all that humidity. Each room on the ground floor had lovely cushioned chairs just outside the door, ideal for eating breakfast or sipping coffee. There was also an individual keurig brewer (with extra K-cups available at the front desk) and a small but serviceable refrigerator in every room.

The public areas of the hotel were a delight, from the enormous polished driftwood front desk to the gorgeous nature photos to the quirky plaster squirrels "running" on the wall outside the restaurant. The pool area was GORGEOUS with redwood planking and a gas log firepit. You could get food and bar service in the pool area from the hotel restaurant. Prices were a little high (although in keeping with the entire area) but the food was definitely worth it. Fabulous flavors and fresh veggies, best food we ate all weekend! They also served the kids meals poolside so we didn't have to try to drag them out of there to eat.

Before we even drove away the kids were begging to come back. We will definitely be staying here again!

Room Tip: Ground floor rooms with even numbers face the pool.

Dear Lili P,

WOW nice review! We do appreciate you taking the time to fill out a review of 5 stars for the Hotel Paradox. It's wonderful to hear what a great time you and your family had while a guest of the Hotel. We are so glad to hear that you enjoyed our Pool deck and Solaire Restaurant + Bar. The Chef creates dishes with an emphasis on sustainable and organic cuisine. While a bit pricier, these items are definitely worth the extra spend for healthy eating. We are so glad you found it to be a good value and the 'best food you ate all weekend'-what a great compliment to the culinary team! We will be sure to commend the Chef and his staff for Wowing you. We do hope to see you again soon!

Thank you,

Stayed here for a couple of nights on business. Very modern decor for all areas of the property. Bar area is also very good. The room was great and especially the shower - it was very upscale. The only issue I had was that the carpet was a bit sticky when walking bare foot - I had to use my slippers when walking around in the room. It appeared that it was not cleaned in a while. Will try one more stay and check carpet before unpacking.

Dear Travel_the_world_80,

Thank you so much for taking time to share your experience at the Hotel Paradox. I apologize that the carpet was not in better condition for you. We have alerted the Housekeeping team to this issue and we will be sure to do a better job at addressing this moving forward. I'd love to help you arrange your next visit and I will be happy to inspect the carpet prior to your arrival to make sure it's in great condition for you personally. I would hate for anyone to feel that they cannot use the room to it's fullest and we will pay better attention to carpet cleaning moving forward. I am glad you enjoyed the décor and the bar area. We have a great bar menu with specialty cocktails and Happy hour is Sun - Thurs from 4p-7p in the bar area. Wednesdays we feature a flamenco guitarist on the pool deck as well. Please do reach out to me for your next visit so I can ensure it's absolutely perfect for you. I'd love to welcome you back to Hotel Paradox. My contact info is below, please let me know when and if I can be of service to you.

Thank you,

We really loved our stay here! It was only one night, but I wish it could have been longer so we could have enjoyed more of the amenities. The surrounding neighborhood isn't much and the hotel doesn't look like much from the outside, but the location is excellent as The Paradox is within walking distance to The Beach Boardwalk and the shops and restaurants of downtown Santa Cruz. There is plenty of parking surrounding the hotel, which is $5.00 per day and charged when you check out. The grounds are well kept, clean, and modern; much like the interior. I love the lobby decor and the upscale feel of the hotel. There are 5 floors. Ground floors have a patio with seating and the other floors do not. We had a Mini King room on the 4th floor. We were initially surprised at how mini it actually is. There isn't much floor space except for maybe 4 feet on either side of the bed and in front of it and then the bathroom. As it was just my wife and I, we didn't mind the tight quarters and still it was clean, comfortable, and well-decorated. The bed was fantastic and the Kohler bathroom fixtures are good quality. Everything looks brand new! The restaurant looked fancy and probably is very good, but we didn't have time to try it. The pool area was very clean with lots of seating and the spa is of of the nicest I've seen at a hotel. It is large and 3 1/2 feet deep. There wasn't so much as a leaf in the pool; it was perfect and heated. At night, there was a live band playing rather relaxing Spanish guitar music near the pool bar and there is a fire pit, which makes it easy to relax out here. This is definitely the place to stay in Santa Cruz. I hope it always stays as nice and well-kept as it was on this trip. I look forward to when we can come back and spend some more time here!

Room Tip: There's not much of a view unless you're facing the pool, which is nice to look at. The view...

I have to agree with the last review...the town is seedy and run down BUT this hotel makes up for it.Its new, clean, hip, friendly, great pool and spa lots of security gates ( you need it) we had room 106 ,with a patio.I suggest the first floor on the sunny poolside.Parking is $5 a day...free if you are disabled...they also have disability equipment for the pool and spa you can park your car close to the room, have coffee outside..the restaurant is a bit pricey, but good.Happy Hour is only Monday to Thursday ..( they should change that).the $ 10 drinks were good, but we ordered a Hennessy and it was expensive and barely could see it... The manager "Rick" walks the grounds and was very nice.the staff is awesome..if we ever return to Santa Cruz...we will ONLY stay there!!!!....

Friendly staff, nice rooms, good facilities - free wi-fi, which was very useful. Staff helpful on recommendations etc ...

I wouldn't recommend Santa Cruz in September though. It was closed !! I get the feeling it is an edge , cool locals town. Rubbish choice of restaurants in the main drag ...
And a lot of homeless/hobos - who may have been perfectly harmless but could appear threatening
