A holiday weekend family trip with my partner, parents, and brother+nephew lead us to Hotel Paradox. We got three different room types (Suite, 2 Queens, and King) and stayed two nights.

-Staff: Friendly staff, check in and check out was easy, advice on local stuff was also easy. Restaurant folks were very patient with a 3 year old diner. They sent up a complimentary bottle of wine on the first night, very nice touch to start a holiday off on the right foot!

-Location: Hotel is located directly off of one of the main roads into Santa Cruz, so easy freeway access, close to everything. It's not on the beach, but you can walk there in 10-15 minutes. There is a park within 5 minutes, which is good if you need to run some little kids around (we did.)

-Rooms: Our rooms were on 4th and 5th floors. All 3 types of rooms were very nice- modern furnishings, crisp linens, good amenities and nice TVs. In the regular sized rooms, space could be a challenge depending on how large your group is. For two people in one room, it is plenty of space. I think if you were trying to do four people, even in a room with two queen beds, it might feel a little tight. The suite had an adjoining room that was like a living room room... TV mounted on the wall, a sofa that had a pull out bed, and a couple of chairs. We were really happy to have it- we got room service one night, ordered pizza another, watched the world cup, etc. With a group of six wanting to hang out, no other room could have fit all of us unless we were all piled on the two queen beds. The price difference was not that great so if you have a larger group, or kids, I'd go for the suite.

-Grounds: The hotel has a nice restaurant with good food, a big pool and hot tub, and plenty of parking. We have all different tastes in a group of 6 with ranging ages and we were all satisfied. The pool and hot tub can get a bit kid-full but if you're in a family group, that's great.

-Food: Healthy options, kid friendly options, can order to room or to pool, and pool bar was a fun hang out spot for the younger crowd (which we joined after the parents and nephew went to bed.)

-Conclusion: Great option for Santa Cruz. It's not on the beach but if that doesn't matter to you, and you're content to walk a bit, it's a great place to stay.

Room Tip: If your room faces the pool, try a higher floor to escape the noise

I stumbled into traffic due to car accident, my husband and Miss Amanda A. at Hotel Paradox, convinced me to pursue my stay and that I would not regret it. They were right! I received a warm welcome at arrival with a free drink and room upgrade. Excellent and friendly service, Eco-friendly and clean, nice restaurant (loved my lemon calamari/mango margarita)! Pool/bar/fire-pit had a relaxing ambiance, quiet and peaceful, enjoyed convenience of shuttle service to Boardwalk/Beach. Weather was nice for just lounging on the beach, and walking down White Cliff street with ocean views! Got to have my Corndogs, Garlic-Fries and vanilla/chocolate twist ice-cream in a cone! Other places to dine were the "Gilbert's Fire-fish Grill (fish tacos) and Stagnarobos (claim chowder)." What a surprise, caught a great show of the fabulous "MACY GRAY" singer/artist.....WOW! My stay was so rewarding, I decided to add another day of relaxation:). Easy ride home, no traffic! I'll be back....smile.

We enjoyed a lovely stay at the hotel Paradox as part of our road trip through California on honeymoon. Lovely modern hotel and the room was spacious, quirky and modern - we really loved it. On arrival we were offered a comp bottle of wine to celebrate our honeymoon which was a lovely touch. The pool bar / bar serves lovely cocktails and we ate in the restaurant one night which was really nice too - lovely food!!! The only downside was the pool is rather small for the amount of families that were in...for 2 days it was fine but if staying for longer a hotel with a bigger pool may be better - the hotel is only walking distance from the beach though (15mins) and the famous Mariannes ice cream parlour was only a 10 min walk away.Overall we had a lovely enjoyable stay in this boutique hotel.

Nice modern rooms, pool bar. Pleasant fun place. Rest-rant on site pricy but good. Very pleasant staff. Only negative is an extra 10 parking fee. Don't need this fee in this area. Walking distance to downtown. Hidden fee they should just add to price. Enjoyed our stay

Loved this vamped-up motel-cum hotel. It was modern and stylish and comfortable, with modern decor and comfy white beds.
Got a good rate because my kids were at nearby UC Santa Cruz and was even given a free bottle of wine because of mistake they had made on my reservation.
Conveniently located on Ocean St, 5-10 mins drive from the Boardwalk and 5 mins drive from downtown SC - so quaint and picture-perfect.
No complaints, though the toilet flush was extremely loud. And as other reviewers mentioned, the pool *was* packed. It is a tiny tiny pool that normally we would not visit because of its sheer (small) size, but we had to pass it every time we went into our rooms and even at 10am there would already be a crowd.

The hotel is very convenietly located, simple, clean, good service.
The pool is great , larger then usual for a hotel set up, so is the hot tub.
Its walking distance to the downtown and a park. The restaurant is average , but they gave us a free breakfast and that the only meal we had there.
They also have a free shuttle if you are going to Boardwalk or other places and don't wanted to deal with parking.

Room Tip: Ask for the first floor so u don't need to use the elevator to get to the pool or food

Cannot compare it to other hotels in the area but to me its reasonably priced, clean rooms, friendly staff, close to whats happening in Santa Cruz and the restaurant does a lovely meal for a reasonable price too. The bar closes at 10 is the only fault I found.
