Nice room near the boardwalk. Quieter than expected. The wifi was not working but the young woman at the front desk kindly assisted us by looking up some local breweries to help us find a place to dine that night. Really nice to have someone so helpful on staff.

My husband and I just got back from a road trip for our anniversary and booked a night at the Carousel Beach Inn based on the reviews on Trip Advisor. I'm incredulous that there are so many high ratings!

I would be wrong to not mention that every single staff member we encountered was wonderful and could not have been nicer, hence the 2 stars. Nothing else warranted that high of a rating. The woman working when we checked in, Laurie/Lori, upgraded our room at not additional charge, which was incredibly nice and I don't want to take that for granted.

We were not expecting anything luxurious or high end. After seeing the proximity to the beach and the Boardwalk on a map, we assumed that this area would be decently nice, possibly very touristy, but certainly safe. No. The surrounding neighborhood is not nice. At all. It was the only time the whole trip that we took every single thing out of the car and into the room with us, including a small dirty laundry bag, not wanting to give anyone any reason to break into the car. We also noticed two used condoms on the ground in the parking lot, which just seemed cliche for a shady area.

After walking around the closed Boardwalk area and strolling down the wharf, we ended up going downtown for the evening just to get away from the area and left pretty early the next morning.

The room design is spartan and pretty modern with bright colors - each floor's doors are painted a different color. I liked the two carousel horses attached the front of the building as you're driving in. In the summer, I imagine the proximity to the attractions must be nice but we went into it knowing that it would all be closed while we were there, so that is not the reason for our disappointment.

A few other things to mention

- There is no carpet in the rooms, which I actually appreciated because it seems like a hard-surface flooring would be easier to keep clean than carpet, but this didn't seem clean. In the closet nook, they had a broom/dust pan - wasn't sure if that was for guests to use or if they just keep one in each room for the housekeeping staff.

- We had no alarm clock. We use our phones for the alarm, but it is nice to look up and see what time it is without digging out your phone.

- The bathroom did not feel clean. Old drips of soap/shampoo were not wiped down in the shower. The shower head actually had dried soap bubbles all over it. The bathroom was also older and had not been updated in the recent renovation.

Thank you for taking the time to write your review. As you can tell from our other reviews, most of the time we get things right, so I was really surprised to learn that your stay was less than satisfactory. Our Room Attendants normally take a lot of pride in keeping rooms in excellent condition and our rooms normally do have an alarm clock radio. I will definitely be following up with staff regarding housekeeping standards. As you noted, our staff are wonderful and would have moved you to a different room had you notified them at the time of any issues. Regarding our private parking lot, we have security cameras and security officers that patrol the area 24/7, so the lot is normally very safe and secure. We're not sure why so much went wrong on your visit, and we're truly sorry!

Sincerely,
Lisa King
Director of Lodging Operations

Stayed at the Carousel Beach Inn. Nice little property across the street from the boardwalk. Clean rooms with friendly staff. Breakfast room with coffee, juice, toast and assorted muffins. It was nice to be so close to the beach.

Room tip: 3 floors with elevator.

We turned up here unannounced, deciding to stop after a quick google search on our PCH road trip. The people who work here are so polite and welcoming. Our room well exceeded expectations and the price was very reasonable. We had a direct view of the boardwalk which was lovely. Breakfast was included and although very simple, was extremely delicious. We got OJ, teas and coffee. Bagels with butter and cream cheese. Delicious muffins and come fresh baked scones and fresh melon and grapes. We were so happy here we stayed an extra night.

This hotel is right across the street from the Amusement Park. Our room had a wonderful view of the park. All the employees are friendly and helpful. Our room was a nice size, and had a king bed. We want to take our granddaughters to Santa Cruz and this is the place we will stay.
