“Great for Families - Historic Farm, Bike and Hike Area, Nice Ocean”

Wilder Ranch State Park is a fun one to go with a family. First there is the historic farm area. There are homes, barns, farm animals, old tractors and wagons.

There are over 34 miles of hiking and bike riding trails. The day we were there there were about 25 pre-teens (and their chaperones) heading out for a nice bike ride.. The ocean views from the cliff areas is also nice.

Time at the park is any where from an hour to several hours depending on the activities plans on doing.

It is close to Santa Cruz, Ca. It is part of the state park system. We have a yearly state park pass; people can also pay just a daily use fee.

We also found some beautiful flowers at the state park.

A friend suggested this as a nice place to stop and stretch our legs between Palo Alto and Monterey. We found the parking lot easily and began following the trickle of families down the road from there, not knowing what we'd find. Happily, we struck up a conversation with some bicyclists outside the rest room before walking too far. They pointed us away from where everyone was headed, and instead toward a path that before long took us to beautiful coastline views. We walked for about an hour, taking lots of gorgeous photos, but could have continued farther. It's more of a walk than a hike, and definitely worth the stop! We never did see what was down the hill, where everyone else (mostly families with young children) was going; we later learned that there was a dairy farm - hence, the name Wilder Ranch. (Fee for parking, but I don't remember how much.) Lots of restaurants right nearby, for before or after your hike. Brochure: http://www.parks.ca.gov/pages/549/files/WilderRanchWebBrochure2009.pdf

We hiked several miles here right along the shoreline. You pay a fee at the entrance. Seems to be a safe parking lot. Clean restroom facilities. Not a lot of info (maps or trail head details) provided by park. However, we really enjoyed our hike. Good birding and seal watching. Headed up the coast from here to lunch in Davenport.

The biking was not very technical. Mainly fire roads. I did get good elevation gain ~2100 feet. If you are looking for technical riding then try another location. This was convenient for me since I was staying in Santa Cruz and could ride to the park. There are great views from up there.
