The Historic Santa Maria Inn
Ranked #3 of 21 Hotels in Santa Maria

We stayed three nights in a suite in the Old Tower. It was comfortable and clean enough, but if they changed the carpets it would make all the difference in how the room looked! The carpets are bad! We had our dog with us, and this is a pet-friendly hotel, so that was a big plus!
The one thing that really irked me was how they advertise "free wireless internet". Needing to do some work while there, this was perfect! But I came to find out that their interpretation of "free wireless internet" was free use of their computer in the lobby! My laptop did NOT work in the room! It did work if I sat in the MAIN lobby, but with the busloads of people coming in constantly, there was no room and it very inconvenient!

The hotel was lovely. I have been there several times and I enjoyed it every time. However, on a recent trip we were giong to stay there, until the day before our departure when we got a phone call telling us that because of the Micheal Jackson trial the media was "camped out" at the inn and would not leave; thus our room were unavailable to us. As it turned out, we ended up at the Radisson.
So as I said before the hotel was great; The meadia is not!

I can't understand why people are moaning about this hotel. Somehow we managed to draw a larger suite room for about $99 which was great. Loads of room, clean and quiet even though there were about 4 functions on that night.
As a place to flop out between San Diego and San Francisco this was excellent. Driving down the street it also seemed to be the hotel with the most character in the whole town
The decor in the public rooms seems to be late Victorian and is a pleasant surprise after identikit hotel/motel rooms.
Staff were busy but polite- no more than that, service was good. Maybe being British we don't notice if someone doesn't snap to attention the minute you want something.
Forget the ghosts - the only ghosts you will see are generated by the spirits in the excellent tap room that is the closest you will come to a proper snug bar in California
Worth another stay

Good news first: Our room was clean and large.

Bad news: This is not the inn of the movie stars who stayed here. Clark Gable, Rudolph Valentino and all the other sparkling ghosts of the past would be horrified by this place as it is today. The inn was closed for several years and then opened again in 1981. A "new" wing was built in 1984. We stayed in a room in the new wing. It has not been updated since it was built - twenty years have passed. The bathtup is chipped, the furniture is ill-chosen. Every effort was made to save money at the time of renovation. That's alright. But there are better ways to save money than to use tacky materials such as wood grain formica. All the walls are filled with depressing prints of children and pets - all hideous, sentimental and a trifle perverse. The restaurant serves foods that no chic or even ordinary place serves anymore. The only updating in the restaurant is in regard to prices - they are definitely in the twenty-first century.

Whatever you may have read here or heard from the hotel itself, this place is to be avoided if possible. It is ugly, tacky and unpleasant. Believe me!
