Me and my parter stayed here in May for about three nights , it is in a great location the rooms are really nice , there is a cool rooftop bar on the top of the hotel has a great view. The staff are really friendly I would defiantly stay here again

We are traveling with a 6 year old and alot of hotels dont really want to cater to these types of situations. you always get the garden view. staff never knows whether the bedroom closes off from the living room and half the time cant guarantee it. we arrived and were immediately upgraded to ocean view without asking. they could have saved that room and given us a lesser view but they didnt. the staff was great from the restaurant, to the front desk to the pool staff to the valets (especially good) to the maids. this is a rare gem and i hesitate to write this review in fear that the hotel will be overrun and we cant get a room! also, the price of the suites were very reasonable when all other hotels wanted twice as much. its not a new hotel, rather deco style, but it was a very pleasant stay

We are a family of four so we opted for a Suite - we got upgraded from a one bedroom to a two bedroom Suite (totally unexpected wonderful surprise as we had not requested this!). This meant we had plenty of room and the balcony was just terrific to enjoy the beach views first thing in the morning and in the evening. We loved the warmth and character of the hotel, especially the art deco style - definitely not a clinical and sterile chain style of hotel. Nevertheless it had clearly all been recently renovated and was top spec in every way. It was a wonderful have to come back to after a day exploring the beaches and Universal Studios. The restaurant was also lovely with wonderful views and sea breeze and readably priced menu including an excellent Kids menu. We stayed here for our last 2 days before heading back to Australia after two weeks of travelling in NYC and Washington and it definitely made our holiday end on a high note!
We will definitely return to this hotel when we come back to LA and would not hesitate to recommend it to friends.

Room Tip: Would recommend a suite for families.

Buyers beware - this is NOT one of the Shangri-la luxury hotels from Asia. Not even close, except perhaps in price.

We booked an ocean deluxe view and upgraded to the rock-n-roll suite on penthouse floor in arrival.

Overall the hotel location and views from its "rock and roll" suite are great.

But that's about all it's got going for it - the suite was no more than a biggish room with ridiculous layout, full of strange compromises like a humongous shower and no bath, a balcony that's accessible for a bar on the same floor and a huge but pathetic excuse of a bed that's sure to give u sore neck and back.

Thankfully we were only there for 2 nights so the enjoyment of the location was not totally ruined by the sleep deprivation from the noisy bar next door and the horrible bed.

First and foremost, I want to apologize for any disruption or inconvenience caused by our rooftop bar. Regardless of its popularity during your time here, you should be able to have a restful and rejuvenating night's sleep while staying with us. I'm so sorry to read that you didn't enjoy our Rock 'n Roll suite. It truly is a unique room, as it sits at the very top of the hotel and has sweeping views of the ocean. Granted it is not our largest or quietest room. We have plenty of those, and we would love another opportunity to share with you the peace and serenity and fun of our hotel that seems to have been missed on your most recent stay. If you want a beautiful hotel right across from the beach in one of the most beautiful parts of Santa Monica, stay at the hotel Shangri-La. The rooms are huge, all the ones we saw were king-size suites. Also, if you need to go anywhere, their excellent driver Chokri knows the city by heart and is extremely helpful. Much nicer and more comfortable than a regular taxi.

This is where we go for a small weekend getaway while we are in LA.

The bathroom - bathtubs opening to the bedroom is such a fun, unique aspect of the rooms, something not to be missed!

A great place to stay for couples, near the beach, good in-room dining and nearby eateries. Love it here.

This the second we have stayed here, the first time was 3 years ago. For this stay we payed for a king de-lux with a sea view the same as one we had stayed in last time, we remembered it being very small but the view over the sea and the pier compensated for the room size.
We arrived at the hotel around 7 pm to be told we had been up graded to a suite (room 114). Excellent we thought! The room was located on the first floor. When we went in the room we noticed that it had slightly larger bedroom than the previous room we had stayed in and had a small lounge area and a kitchen. Unfortunately the room is located just feet from the footpath, with the bathroom looking directly onto the car park. So you need to keep the curtains pulled across as they are clear glass, this made the room feel very dark and depressing.
We went back to reception to say that we didn't like the room and could we have the room we had paid for. We were told that they didn't have one available and we would have to stay in that room till the morning then they could move us.
We had a terrible nights sleep as you could hear people dragging their cases and talking outside along the footpath.
The next morning we were moved to our type that we had booked.
I would now like to say something about the general quality of the hotel room. The wooden floor was covered in dust all around the edges of the room, all of the windows in the room were dirty and very poorly painted and those that were metal were rusting in places.
Many of the fixtures and fittings are also looking very worn. There are no tea or coffee making facilities, no iron/ironing board in the room (you need to contact reception to have one brought up). The wardrobe space is tiny and drawer space is limited.
Finally reception. On arrival and during the room change the reception staff were helpful, but on checking out we were never asked if everything had worked out OK and had we enjoyed our stay,

All in all, the rooms are in need of some maintenance and upkeep to bring them back up to standard.
Sorry Shangri-La but we won't be back again a 3rd time.

Room Tip: If you feel that you must stay here insist on a room on the 4th floor, preferably with a sea view to...
