“Absolutely fantastic - perfect location, immaculate rooms and great facilities”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 20 October 2010

I stayed here for 2 nights in September and had the absolute time of my life. This hostel is fantastic - I'm a young female and was travelling solo, and felt 100% safe and secure at all times - you can't get past the reception area without a swipe key. The rooms were perfect. They were really nice and well kept (a little warm though), with comfortable wooden bunk beds, lockers (bring your own lock, or buy one from the reception), and a long mirror with a sink too. I didn't find noise to be a problem. There is free wifi downstairs, and as previous reviewers have mentioned, a computer section with very fast (and very, very cheap) internet. The location is perfect, and a few moments walk to the beach and to third street promenade. There are plenty of showers on each floor and I never needed to wait to have a shower (and although they only had shower curtains and not lockable doors, it wasn't a problem). I did have a problem with the water being on the cold side a few times though, but I must have been unlucky, as the other people I spoke to about it didn't have this issue.

It is a great place to meet fellow travellers, and if you're not sure what to do, they organise several activities so you won't be bored! The shuttle service they organise to the airport is reliable and much cheaper than a taxi, so it's certainly worth looking into.

All in all, an excellent hostel, and I would definitely stay here again!

Very nice hostel with top quality furnishings and lots of nice spaces;

Good;
free wifi, really nice kitchen, outdoor courtyard, free breakfast (cereal, bread, juice), great location, big rooms, ok bathrooms.

Bad;
Expensive (35/night all in), drunk englishman. If you want free parking, go down second street North into residential neighbourhood past Idaho street, then you can park there safely, if you can find a spot. Bring a lock!

There is also the Venice Cotel which is right on the Venice boardwalk that is 25/night all in if you want a little bunker, crappier hostel but cheaper.

The average price of a bed at this hostel makes it very good value for single travellers. For women especially it's a great deal due to generally safe and convenient location, good security, nice facilities including use of kitchen, payg computers and an adequate breakfast provided.
I'm a little older than the avarage hosteller but have a limited travel budget and this put me right between the beach and the shopping areas and in very easy walking distance of both. If you are over 50 you might struggle if allocated a top bunk, as I was.
Public transport links make it accessible from both the LAX airport and the Amtrack station so you don't need a rental car at all - highly unusual in LA!
I booked through Hostelling International (HI)'s own website which allows you to select from all types of accomodation available for your travel dates. I'd recommend paying one or two (or even five) dollars more to get a smaller dorm room with ensuite bathroom, the less roommates you have the more sleep you are likely to get and the less use your bathroom gets.
You will need your own padlock to secure your locker, so either take one or be prepared to purchase one from the frontdesk for $5. A luggage lock will do - you don't need a heavy duty lock.
Bedding and one towel are provided, as are bathroom basics.
It's really all you need, on a budget. If you are travelling as a party of 2 you might get a motel room at around the same price, although the location won't be as fantastic. Party of 3 or more splitting the cost of one room can find better value elsewhere.

Stayed here for two nights. The location could not be better. For any people who are traveling on their own this is the perfect place to stay. It is clean and safe. It has lockers in the room, internet available and computers for those who dont travel with a laptop. The only down side to the experience was a very unfriendly female member of staff on the front desk. Although I did go down to the desk in the early hours of the morning to buy ear plugs and was greeted by a very friendly fella so they were not all bad.

I really liked this hostel but unfortunately the only thing that let it down was the noise. I expected it to be a loud hostel due to the size but i didnt get 1 decent nights sleep for the 5 nights that i was there.
On the upside the location is fantastic as are the staff and facilities.
The rooms and kitchens/bathrooms were always nice and clean, and the library, TV room were great.
Also very good free breakfast - lots of choice.
Overall a nice place to stay if you dont mind not sleeping!

-great location, you can walk to the pier, shopping, gelato, restaurants galore, the room size is all you need since you're not there much, it's just a huge hostel though so you're bound to have noise.

I stayed at YHI Santa Monica for two nights in May. I had a blast, its a quality hostel like no other. Friendly staff, EXTREMELY clean rooms, bathrooms and lobby. The place has several massive flat screen tvs for your viewing pleasure, along with a fireplace and even a piano!

They have comedy nights and several other forms of entertainment too. There is a HUGE clean, tidy kitchen with every utensil you could ever need.

I stayed in a 4 bedroom dorm and paid about $44 a night. Its a little on the pricey side but i believe its well worth it. The dorms have a locker for each guest and I felt very safe, secure and clean in my room. The location of the hostel in VERY CENTRAL, perfect!

The downside to this place is that they start vacuuming early in the morning, like 8-9am, along with alot of noise from outside that comes in through the windows, so sleep is not something that comes easy here. I had a shuttle bus driver banging on my door at 7.30am after a big night, i was not very impressed. Also, they staff are friendly however they do not give you all the details when you check in, like internet details etc, I think they could be a lilttle more helpful and there is also a long wait at the lobby, which is annoying!! The cleaners here are also quite rude and demanding however maybe thats just a language/culture barrier as they are all Mexican with very little English?

Other then that this place is a LUXURIOUS hostel and 100% recommend this place if you want to stay in Santa Monica (which is just BEAUTIFUL).
