We loved our stay here - we slept in 7 different hotels in our 3 week trek across the West Coast and loved our stay in the Best Western Gateway Hotel.
Pros - Great location, lovely rooms, free parking, complimentary shuttle to the shops/promenade area which also picks you up, by prior arrangement!
The staff were really helpful and friendly from the outset. They provided extra coffee for the room on request (we both love our coffee), the staff were also kind and friendly to my children - my youngest left a small to in the foyer when waiting for the complementary shuttle bus, one quick call and the staff hunted it down and kept it safe until our return.
The room was spotless and beautifully presented, it had a coffee maker which makes a small pot of coffee, a fridge and excellent air conditioning - an excellent example of how hotels should be! We did not find this level of presentation in all Best Western Plus hotels (we stayed in 3 Best Western during our trip - Monterey Beach resort, Lake Tahoe Station House and Santa Monica)
Cons - A little disappointed not to have a pool but we did know this before booking and the view from the room was another building but, it is in a built up area, again, I didn't really expect a view from the window but we can always hope.
The discount from the hotel for ihop at breakfast is disappointing, considering it is owned by the hotel - only 10% but offering 20% for lunch or dinner (why?)
All in all - I gave the hotel 5 out of 5 because it really exceeded our expectations in terms of value for money and presentation. Thank you Best Western Plus Gateway Hotel!

We were a little frustrated with the cost of rooms in Santa Monica, but since this had decent reviews and was more reasonably priced than anything nearer the beach, we decided on this hotel. We could not have been more pleased when we arrived. The desk clerk was very helpful--willing to check us in early and providing local maps and transportation information, including a $1 per trip bus that picks up right across the street and goes directly to the Santa Monica Pier and Venice Beach. When we opened the door to our room we were especially happy. It was spacious, extremely clean and had a bright, light and fresh feel to it. Little details like the electrical outlet right in the night stands and bottle opener attached to the fridge were much appreciated. And every staff member we encountered was friendly and helpful. Although the cost seemed high initially, it was in line with the area, but I don't think we could've found a cleaner, more comfortable room with a more accommodating staff even if we'd paid more. We will stay there again.

We stayed 3 nights here as a base for our time in LA arriving from the UK. Santa Monica and Venice sea fronts are a short drive and the location is good for Beverley Hills, Downtown, the Getty, Hollywood and Malibu. The rooms are clean and quiet. Parking (and wifi) is free which is very important in LA. We enjoyed the nearby Thai restaurant recommendation and their iHop was useful to load up with calories for breakfast. It would have been nice to stay on Santa Monica beach but if you visit LA this is a good, safe place to stay, sleep and eat breakfast which is what we wanted.

I have stayed at many hotels and when something disrupts a persons stay an apology is usually given. A Fire Alarm went off two times before 4:00 am and disrupted my sleep. No one apologized or made note of a problem occurring

Not too much to write about actually. The rooms are updated, very basic, we had a king room, it wasn't big. There is no pool, no hot tub, no breakfast. There is a garage parking which is a plus. The hotel is in Santa Monica, but pretty far from 3rd street, the pier, etc. The shuttle runs only on weekdays (we had a car, but otherwise you have to rely on public transportation).

Room Tip: We had a room not facing the street, it was quiet
