Just discovered Santa Paula AND two great eateries. Loved Garman's Restaurant and Irish Pub. It's right in the middle of town on Main St., "and you can't miss it!" as we were told innumerable times when we got lost in Ireland. At least you shouldn't, if you're anywhere near Santa Paula. My husband and I had the avocado bacon burger on ciabatta rolls...absolutely HUGE and Delicious. I always love a messy hamburger, and this was MESSY! I had the home-fried potato chips (really good) and he had fries and also a bowl of the home-made onion soup, also absolutely delicious. I was really impressed that not only did they have Guinness on tap (sorry, I'm just not crazy about Guinness), but they also had my favorite Smithwick's Irish Ale (pronounced Shmidick's by the Irish, and they ought to know, since it's now brewed by Guinness right in Dublin!), also on tap. And none of this puny American 16 oz pint, but the real Imperial pint that comes in at 20 oz. and in a bona fide Smithwick's glass. Loved it!
The pub itself is really like an Irish pub. We just got back from our 2nd month long trip to Ireland, and we hit a ton of pubs over there (so much fun), so it was wonderful to find a really Irish-appearing pub stateside, and in little Santa Paula, no less. There were even dart boards and pool tables in the back area. I meant to ask about the bar, but forgot. It looks great and as if it is really old.
The waitress was what really made the experience Wonderful, along with the great meal. Martha went out of her way to help us, to make us feel like old friends, like pub regulars. She is an absolute Gem! Santa Paula is a little farming town, off the main road and well worth the time to explore, and Martha knew all the best spots to visit, told us about the town happenings and history, and in general, was a great Chamber of Commerce-tyoe addition. She works at Garman's on Mondays and Wednesdays and you better believe we'll be back on one of her days (actually already have it planned for the end of the month and we live an hour+ away), for another great meal and to say Hi to our new friend! Thank you, Martha, for Everything!!!
