Owner description: Escape to Africa by way of Sonoma County…Come discover the Sonoma Serengeti. The classic African safari is a trip of a lifetime for intrepid travelers from around the globe - and, it is closer than you think! The entire Safari West experience is a kid-friendly adventure for families to enjoy together. Our tours are designed to educate guests of all ages and we have found that families are truly inspired as they learn from and share with one another. At Safari West we strive to actively promote conservation and environmental education concepts to our guests, whether they are with us for an hour or a week. The whole experience at Safari West is one of building connections and making discoveries; getting back to basics and enjoying the profound simple pleasures of family and nature that are all too often overlooked. If anything is “not to be missed,” it is that sense of serenity one finds while gazing at graceful giraffe nuzzling her newborn or the surge of raw adventure while witnessing an energetic herd of wildebeest galloping across the horizon. Overnight lodging is also available - the true 'glamping' experience!

“Perfect execution”
Reviewed 19 July 2012

My wife, eight year old daughter and I went to Safari West on July 12th and did the Safari, Dinner, and stayed over night. Near our home in NJ is the Great Adventure Safari - an example of a good idea done poorly. Safari West is the opposite - the training of the staff (Robin was our guide), the layout of the property, the authentic safari vehicles - made the three plus hour tour an amazing experience. The cookout was great and they accommodated our vegetarian family. The accommodations were really cool and a great combination of roughing it and living it up. I will recommend this to place to anyone and everyone. The owners should be proud of their accomplishment.

“Fun outing for the whole family”
Reviewed 18 July 2012

Safari West is a fun outing for all ages. We went there just for a "safari," not overnight. The sleeping accomodations look really cool, but they're a little expensive. Although I suspect the experience is worth the cost.

Anyways, the 3-4 hour safari we took was well done. Part of it is easy walking to view caged animals. That sounds boring, but the animals were very interesting and the cages looked very well maintained and large. Walking through the aviary and seeing the exotic birds was unique, and the birds were just fascinating.

The driving part on the safari buggy was great fun--especially for the kids! We saw a lot of animals up close. The animals were very interesting and the tour guide did an excellent job of giving us animal facts and telling compelling anecdotes about them.

We felt very well entertained and educated afterwards. We'll definitely return with guests and advise others to visit Safari West as well.

“As close to Africa as you can get without an airplane”
Reviewed 15 July 2012

My grandson and I participated in a Road Scholar group intergenerational 3-day trip, so that in addition to the rightly praised and iconic jeep tour, we had several tailored activities. These included two wildlife films and several individual presentations by zookeepers. All of these were highly knowledgeable, madly enthusiastic about their work, and passionate about animals.

The food was healthful and abundant, but there was only minor variation over the 3 days. The accommodations are in very comfortable tent cabins with wood floors. Heating might be a problem in colder months, but wasn't in July. We were ecstatic about the total experience, and the kudos should be shared with Road Scholar.

“superb”
Reviewed 15 July 2012

My wife and I really enjoyed this tour. Our tour guide Danny described himself as a geek and proved to have a real passion and knowledge about the animals in the park. Our tour lasted the best part of 4 hours and not a minute was wasted. I usually don't like "zoos" but all the enclosures gave the animals plenty of space to roam and you could tell all the staff really cared about the welfare of the animals.

If you take the time to interact with the guides they are really knowledgeable and keen to share their enthusiasm for their area of expertise.

A must see if you are in wine country.
