We had a great time on our jeep tour at Safari West! Robert, our guide, was very knowledgeable and entertaining. We saw many animals including endangered species and several babies that were born there. Several reviews stated that it was expensive but I consider it a contribution to a group that are fighting to preserve and protect these animals.

We stayed overnight in one of the tent cabins. Check-in was efficient. We were taken to our room, helped with the luggage, and had details explained. A cooler and ice are provided. The room was very nice and the bed comfortable. Lighting in the bathroom is low. It can be cold in winter months so be prepared to dress in layers.

Our safari was scheduled for the next day so we had the afternoon and evening to relax, walk around camp and visit with friends. It was a wonderful experience to see and hear the animals.

We opted to have the dinner on site and it was good. Bring a flashlight to walk back after dinner. Breakfast was similar to a continental breakfast. Check-out wasn't well organized.

While it's not the same as being in Africa, Safari West offers some of the same sights and sounds and is worth a stay.

Room Tip: The flamingos can be noisy.

Great overnight. Watch out for rattlesnakes though! Bring ear plugs as flamingos are loud all night long. Ask for Alex for safari tour guide...kind and quite knowlegable. Cabins comfortable and dinner good. Not sure behind the scenes private tour worth the extra money though. A wonderful grandparent outing.

This was my second time staying at Safari West. We just love it and can't wait to plan another trip. How cool is it to sit on your deck with a cold beer in hand and watch giraffes and antelopes. It's a must to pay the extra and stay in antelope alley. The staff is so friendly and helpful. They transport you and your luggage to your cute lil tent cabin, and they even give you a bag of ice and water for the ice chest that sits on the patio. I love hearing all the sounds of the animals, especially at night. The dinner is pricey but it's pretty darn good! Shower is pretty small but it does the purpose. Bed was very comfy with just the right about of blankets. We have stayed in #17 twice now, it's our favorite. It's as close to Africa that I will ever get. Thank you so much!
We will be back!

Well, it's less expensive than a trip to Africa. And they do have to feed all those animals. Service was very friendly, and our comfort meant a lot to the staff. Staying in a safari tent (nicely decorated, by the way) was fun and we could have imagined ourselves in far off places. Appreciated the electric blanket!though our tent #30 had no view of the animals. #29 had a good view of the lake, but I think it's best to have a giraffe view. The safari truck tour was a kick--long and bumpy, a real adventure on our rainy afternoon. We were given blankets and wore rain gear, but we got wet and cold. Recommendation: bring an extra pair of shoes. And if it's cold and wet, put aside the idea you will see the reticulated giraffes, who can't handle that weather. We were disappointed, but we can't expect them to miserable just to make us
happy. The rest of the animals, including a baby zebra and baby wildebeest born earlier that afternoon, we're especially visible and active in that weather, to our delight. The tour is flexible because most of the animals' locations change in the wide open range. Dinner was BBQ and quite filling, and breakfast was an expanded continental. The Santa Rosa area and Sonoma County in General is beautifully hilly and wooded--be aware that the area gets very hot and dry in the summer. Our rainy May date was atypical. I loved Safari West though I thought it was a bit overpriced. I would go back again with my grandkids just for the tour. The only negative I could add is that some of the animals are in smallish enclosures. Not tiny, but they could be bigger considering the size of the property. But it's a caring place.

We stayed in a tent cabin with two queens overlooking the lake and hills (#29) and it was fabulous!! Large, well-appointed, not-too-kitschy African decor, wooden floors and full bathroom (with shower). There are heating blankets and comforters with great bedding making a night's sleep easy even with a cold night - also a space heater.

It IS a tent - so if it's cooler at night it will be cold! The bathroom, especially, as it's not heated at all. Each cabin had different views based on it's location and some I would not have been happy with some I saw I have to say. That said, you're really there to walk the grounds and take the safari tour and experience a night in a safari tent. There are plenty of plugs.

There are outdoor deck/patios and they provide a cooler stocked with waters for you - a nice touch. The towels and toiletries are nice quality. They will have a wonderful person meet you upon checkin to take you in a jeep to your car to get your luggage and take it up to your cabin (and back upon check out).

Tips:
1. IF you need silence to sleep - bring EARPLUGS! The flamingos make a lot of noise - all night.
2. Bring a flashlight to easily find your way back to your tent at night (or to go down to the office if need be). Bring socks for the evening no matter how warm during the day (as I mentioned, the bathroom is cold!)
3.Bring cash to tip the guys who take your luggage and your tour guide
4.Book dinner there - you're paying to be there already so why leave the property? The dinner is good, plenty of food (buffet) and they cook chicken and beef right on the giant wood grill outside - done very nicely!! You can also roast marshmallows there after dinner. Beer and wine available for purchase, decent selection and we got a nice Napa cab for only $40.
5. Only AT&T cell coverage (no Verizon) and wifi only available down in the cafe. Enjoy it and just unplug for your stay!
6. Go early in the day to enjoy the property and wander around

The included continental breakfast is pretty good - fruits, dry cereals, oatmeal, muffins, bread/bagels/english muffins and a toaster, yogurt and a hot chocolate machine.

Definitely the way to take in this experience is to stay the night! I'd think one night is good, assuming you can arrive early enough in the day to enjoy everything.

Room Tip: #29 was awesome.

We have been doing wine tours and parks and trolley rides and ferry rides. This portion of the trip was amazing due to what we saw, what we heard, how we were treated and what we learned.

We saw and heard rhinoceros, flamingos and water buffalo.

We were treated professionally, the animals were the focus, not the tip.

We learned about the animals and our guide thoughtfully answered our questions.
