“Some of the best cheese we've ever had”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 30 January 2012

This is located near the Laguna de Santa Rosa and can be a nice drive on a pretty day. This would not be considered much of a "destination" as the cheese factory is not really set up for touring and the staff speaks very, very little English...
BUT...they make some of thee best cheese we have ever had and they sell it at an incredible price in relation to other premium cheeses...
My recommendation is to Google the Matos Cheese factory to get an appreciation for the cheese-maker and his unique heritage and background. It's really very cool...then head out, prepared to be underwhelmed by the location and then overwhelmed with the taste of this great cheese.
Put it in the middle, snack-section of your Sonoma County Wine Country tour and you'll be glad you did.

“Delicious!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 9 November 2011

Wow- What excellent cheese!
My husband and I enjoy seeking out unique experiences and foods when we travel, so finding Joe Matos Cheese was a perfect stop for us. It's a quaint little place, very out of the way... but SO worth the trip. The "cheese factory" is more of a tiny rustic tasting room attached to the place where the cheese is made and stored. The woman we dealt with was delightful (if a bit eccentric) and definitely passionate about their cheese. She gave us a big hunk each to taste. We liked the cheese so much, we bought a 10 pound wheel. At $7 a pound, we couldn't resist. Go! You won't regret it!

“The Matos Cheese Factory is a great place, if you like cheese, you'll love the cheese here...”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 August 2009

I personally enjoy the experience of going out to the Matos Cheese Factory, and the cheese is some of the best cheese you'll find anywhere.
It's an all around cheese, sort of like a utility cheese, that seems to combine the best properties of some of the most popular cheeses like a combination of the flavors of Cheddar, and Swiss cheese, with a slight sharpness and a tanginess that reminds me of a flavor that's reminiscent of a hint of Blue cheese.
This cheese also has the soft texture of Havari cheese.
I enjoyed this cheese so much i brought some to my Mom, who's very particular about her food, it turns out that she really loves this cheese and she demanded that I go back and purchase more cheese.
Aside from eating it by the chunk along side a serving of fruit, she also likes this cheese grated on top of spaghetti, this cheese could be left out and dried to make a fine hard cheese.
It also makes a superb addition to the classic macaroni and cheese recipe...
All in all a great cheese and a delightful adventure. Enjoy, and take pictures "say cheese" it's worth remembering.
Oh yeah there's a sign that reads "Matos Cheese Factory" on Llano road.
