“Seen Better Days”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 February 2009

Though the staff were nice on check in and check out, and apologetic for the problems, the Hotel La Rose has definitely seent its better days.

After reading prior reviews about noise, we specifically asked for a suite that did not front on the noisy side. I was assured that i would have a "back side king suite." When we arrived and checked in, we were given a suite on the front side of the building. Noise was not really an issue, we were told, because we were on the fourth floor and there are no windows. That's only half true, and in any event, not consistent with our original reservation. Suites on the fourth floor all face the same direction (so we were told), and have an interior sloped celing with these funky skylights. The closing mechanism was broken on two of the skylights in our room, and when the wind blew they rattled and banged all night. Because they kept blowing open, we were able to enjoy the noise and activity on the street.

Inside, the room was well worn and suffering from deferred maintenance -- what you would expect from a truck stop motel:
- as above, the windows didn't close
- the bed had only a mattress (no box spring) on a plywood base. The mattress felt like it was made from the same stone as the building's facade.
- the love seat in the room had an ill fitting slip cover. It needed it.
- the carpet and furnishings were well worn (out).
- there was no hot water.

Don't be deceived by what look like bargain rates. If you want a bargain motel, stay at one. If you want a luxury hotel, stay at one -- not this place.

We loved staying at the Hotel La Rose. We had a room in the original building. It was nicely decorated, very clean and had everything we needed. The coffee was great, and the toiletries were very nice indeed. Very comfortable bed.

We asked for ice, and it was brought up to our room with bottled water and fruit, at no extra charge.

The continental breakfast was one of the best we've seen in a while. Bread, bagels, home-baked scones, cereals, cold meats, cheeses, etc. All great quality.

We also recommend the restaurant, Josef's. The food and service were of great quality, the staff were very attentive and helpful.

The Christmas decorations were beautiful. It was like staying in someone's home.

You are in for a treat if you stay at the 101 year old Hotel La Rose. It is beautifully restored with a wonderful atmosphere and tons of antiques. Our room was spacious and had nooks, crannies and a vaulted ceiling (we were on the top floor). The staff were incredibly friendly and helpful and the European style continental breakfast that is included was hearty and more than adequate. The location is in a lovely neighborhood that is in the process of revival with antique stores, cafes etc. and is about 4 blocks from the center of downtown Santa Rosa. Parking is in an outside lot about a block away. This hotel reminded me of some gems I previously found through Tripadvisor in Stockholm and Rome. I really loved this place and would highly recommend it.

My husband and I spent two nights at the Hotel La Rose and we loved it. It was an older hotel - more along the lines of a Bed and Breakfast. It had antiques, quaint furniture and a delicious European style breakfast that was included in the price of the room. The staff was very friendly.....will definitely stay there again if we are in Santa Rosa!

  • Liked — It was quiet and it had an incredibly comfortable bed and pillows
  • Disliked — I didn't have a single complaint

We had a great stay in the Carriage House across the street for 2 nights. We had the back corner room, first floor (room 56), which was very private and quiet. Had no troubles with motorcycles or traffic. The rooms were very big and bathrooms huge by any hotel standards. Toiletries were a fabulous blood orange scent. The bathroom was all done in marble and had everything you needed in it (hairdryer, iron, wardrobe, etc.). Beds were very comfy. Breakfast was very delicious and kept us full (hard boiled eggs, bagels, scones, lox, fresh fruit, cereal, teas/coffee with to-go cups as well). Coffee shop across the street was great as well (Aroma Roasters) and so was LoCoco Italian and Thai House (both in walking distance on 4th street). You get a free glass of wine upon arrival and a discount at the restaurant. This hotel was a great central point for our wine touring vacatio!

  • Liked — comfy bed, huge room/bathroom, great breakfast
  • Disliked — parking across the street

We stayed 4 days, visiting family and first time to wine counrty. Stayed in the cartiage house across the street from hotel. Just a few steps front door of the hotel. first 2 nights (room 60) faced the street with a 4 way stop. So the motor cycles very loud all night . A bar down the street music loud. After that, we requested a more quiet room. it was ok. Rooms cute, and I found the bed and linens in our first room, beauiful. The second room missed by this.Breakfast served, nice and enough to hold you over until lunch time. Coffee cafe across the street . We had lunch at the inside resturant, it was OK. The small park across the street, cute be the homeless took it over. The homeless mission a block away. Didnt bother us.

  • Liked — bed linens and comfy bed
  • Disliked — the busy street. noisey

I was traveling on business and normally stay at a Starwood since I am a member. I am used to the attention from the staff at a W or Westin. I have to say that NEVER have I been treated with more personal attention then when I stayed at La Rose. Valentin, with the hat, is so sweet. I came down for ice and he filled up my ice bucket and topped it with fresh fruit. The staff at the desk was equally helpful and respectful. Check in and out was a breeze.

This is a vintage hotel and I stayed in the main building. The room was very romantic - too bad it was just me on business. I would certainly come back and stay with my husband. If you are not a big fan of vintage then stay in the carriage house. It looked more updated from what I saw on the tv.

I didn't eat at the hotel, but took advantage of a Chevy's across the street. On the other corner is a really sweet coffee shop. They seemed to be open all hours and even had evening music.
