“Great stay at the Hilton”
Reviewed 29 July 2014 via mobile

My wife and I spent a night at the Hilton Sonoma Inn while visiting the Sonoma/ Napa wineries. We found everything to our liking. We had lunch and breakfast buffet which was really good and drinks one evening. The room was nice and clean. We would definitely return to the Hilton Sonoma in Santa Rosa.

Let's just get the bad out of the way up front, The air conditioning was horrible; you just could not get the room cooled off.

Now, the property is in a handy spot. It's easy to get to it from the 101. It's handy to the Sonoma and Russian River wineries. The front desk help was outstanding. They went out of their way to help with maps and coupons to the wineries. They had a very organized filing system of maps and coupons and great suggestions. I give the front desk a 10 out of 10 for "Knock Your Socks Off" service.

Look, the hotel property isn't the fanciest resort property you will ever visit, but, it is very nice. Parking, as others have stated, is very handy and the automatic doors aid in bringing your luggage in. It seems to be in a safe area; my wife walked the sidewalks in the surrounding business park for her fitness routine. It's handy to downtown for plenty of shopping and dining as well as local activities.

Would we stay again? Sure. But, I sure would like some air conditioning the next time.

Staged a small company meeting here and I was originally curious as to why the rates were so low for the area especially compared to the 'lower end' Hilton Garden Inn property close by. Hotel is looking a little old and the rooms could use a sprucing up. Amenities and facilities were okay, but once again, for a Hilton name I was expecting something nicer (fitness area, lobby, rooms, etc.). Considering the wine country area, there is too much good competition (westin, marriott) at this supposed level to carry the Hilton moniker.

We stayed for four nights in a king room with a pool view in the Chablis building. We were in a second floor room and did not experience the mildew smell mentioned by some other reviewers and by one of your friends who was staying on the level of the deck. We were in town for the Snoopy Seniors Hockey Tournament and, with the exception of a few little glitches, our experience here was very comfortable and convenient.

The hotel is in a great location for getting to places like vineyards, downtown Santa Rosa, The Charles Schulz Museum, etc. even though it is located in a sort of industrial park type of area. Our room was clean and spacious with plenty of dresser drawers and closet space. We asked for a mini fridge to be placed in the room, which they did immediately. The a/c was a bit slow, but it did work just fine. We appreciated the automatic doors to the building for loading/unloading.

My hubby shipped his hockey equipment ahead of our arrival, and the hotel gladly accepted his boxes and got a little truck to deliver it to our room after we arrived (and called UPS for us to pick it up at the desk when we were checking out). We surprisingly enjoyed their restaurant terrace several times throughout our stay.

The main glitches involved lamps in our room. One of the lamps had the switch break near the end of our stay. The other two bedside lamps had outlets in their bases for charging phones, but they would only charge when the lamps were turned on, which wasn't too helpful. We ended up having to unplug the alarm clock and the floor lamp in order to charge our phones and tablets. We told the front desk about this on check-out day and the staff member seemed to be surprised and sent a technician while we were still packing up. He said he'd attend to the broken switch but as far as the lamp outlet charging only when they are on, he said they are that way!!! That seems quite ridiculous and I would urge the hotel to replace this situation.

Another small glitch was that on the hotel website the amenities list for our category of room (king room pool view) says that self laundry is available, but there is no self-laundry at this hotel. I did report this discrepancy to the front desk at check-out, but as of this writing it is still incorrect.

However, note there is a very nice laundromat just a few minutes away, on the other side of 101, which is an important item when you're at a hockey tournament, and/or traveling further after Santa Rosa!

I just came back from a quick weekend in Sonoma. We booked everything very last minute. When we went to look for hotels, many were already full, but we found the Sonoma Hilton still had availability. So, we booked.

The location is great. We were able to get anywhere fast. We were able to drive the car right up to the room, which was very helpful when we were taking our wine in and out of the car, and we had a lot.

The breakfast buffet was tasty. They had a lot of choices. My boyfriend went back for seconds everyday. We sat outside and enjoyed the weather.

The rooms were just fine. We really didn't spend too much time in ours as we were out tasting most of the time. The room was a little old, but it was functional and clean. I was able to hear the person upstairs walking around, but I slept like a rock most nights.

Overall, I would recommend this hotel for a quick trip if you need a nice, central place to stay in Sonoma.

This hotel needs some TLC but the overall stay was good. It is pet and kid friendly, a big plus when traveling. Restaurant staff was not attentive during breakfast buffet. Front desk was very professional when presented with a problem.

I stay in about 30 different Hilton properties each year. This one has many positive qualities, but the negatives outweigh the positives.

As other reviewers have noted, there are issues. I have also read the recent management responses. As the management has noted, they could have addressed many comments if they had known about them while the reviewer was still in the hotel. Unfortunately, in my case, there wasn't much they could have done about the issues.

First, the positives. The place is well-run and managed. All of my interactions with the staff were nothing but positive. Very well run hotel. The pool area is outstanding. Nicely landscaped and maintained. Spending some some time in the afternoon at the pool is a must. If there was one thing they could do better here is put a portable mini-bar and bartender there for a few hours in the afternoon. It's one of the bright spots of this hotel, I'd focus on it more.

The location is superb. If you want to explore Sonoma County wineries, you're in the right spot. Super easy access to many, many superb wineries.

The negatives are next. When we walked into the room, it smelled wet and musty. I could have went back and asked for another room, true. However, I thought the room must have been not used for a while and just needed some A/C. Wrong move. The A/C is anemic, at best. Part of the issue is undoubtedly the cool, wet climate outside. Most of the days we were there, the temp was in the 60's and the humidity for our stay was above 70%. Very tough environment to keep dry. However, if I'm staying at a Hilton, I expect them to have figured this out a long time ago. The other reviews that mention mold and musty conditions are seeing the same issue. When the A/C did kick on, the air coming out of the vent didn't seem to be very dry and not very cold. Seems like the HVAC just isn't doing it's job. We spent two days trying to dry the room out by running the A/C set at 64. It got better after a couple of days, but my wife froze. I really don't know what the problem is, but saw the same thing at a Doubletree in Costa Rica, where they didn't run the HVAC in a room if a guest wasn't in there. My wife and I had a running bet on whether the room would smell musty when we came back in the afternoon. I thought I could fix it, and was wrong.

The hotel is a little old and the floors are creaky. We were there while the hockey teams were there and you could hear everyone walking in the room above us. Everyone was very well behaved, it's just you hear everything if you're not on the top floor.

Tough review for a Hilton. There's not much they're going to do without an expensive remodeling project. Great service just isn't going to address the basic issues. Don't get me wrong, this is NOT a Motel 6. It just that you expect more when you see the Hilton sign.

Room Tip: Trust me, top floor
