when in San Francisco Cavallo Point is one of my favorite places to stay. It's an historic place that has been converted into an Leeds certified hotel. I have stayed several times and have been in all types of rooms - Some are noisier than others (the officer's sleeping quarters as opposed to the newly built rooms) - but the setting is fantastic. I love to jog around the property in the morning and see the Golden Gate bridge. Certain nights, the fog horn makes Cavallo Point mystical. The restaurant is incredible = whether it is for breakfast, lunch or dinner. On cool days, you can still eat outside as they provide blankets on the patio.

Lovely enclave of renovated officers' quarters converted to private second story suites. The location is quiet; food at the restaurant is delicious; spa services are terrific. Look on-line for a 20 percent discount for spa services mid-week. The sleeping quarters were lovely. On the second day, no maid service came to our room.
The location is hikeable to Sausalito, but allow an hour.
Enjoy some welcome peace when you visit!

Room Tip: Choose a house. The newer facilities lack charm.

I just discovered this hidden treasure right in my own backyard. This fabulous hotel/spa/restaurant is the former historic officer's quarters and lodge on the tip of Marin where it meets the Golden Gate Bridge.

We stayed in one of the new buildings (vs. historic) and enjoyed a gorgeous modern designed room that included all the usual accoutrements.

The spa is quiet and serene. My facial was as good as any I've had anywhere. I glowed!

The restaurant deck has expansive views of the bay, San Francisco and the bridge, separated by a huge lawn/meadow. They also have a large side patio with fireplaces and comfy seating. Food is great, wine list is good, and the service is attentive. Dogs appeare to be welcome. Take a long hike to the headlands or a short one to Sausalito for shopping.

My only issue is that we booked via Expedia and they gave us a room with one king bed, instaed of the two queens we requested. The hotel was full, so we had a closer sleepover than expected. Oh well, we've known each other since 3rd grade. Call ahead to make sure you are getting what you reserved.

Room Tip: All look good.

My wife and I went to Cavallo Point for the 2nd leg of our 10yr wedding anniversary. We spent the first half at the Terranea in Los Angeles. It was probably unfortunate we went from the Terranea first, but we expected the Cavallo Point to be the more relaxing of the 2. Unfortunately it was not and simply because of the food a the restaurant (and bar) being so terrible. The views were awesome, bed comfortable, plenty of peace and quiet, but when meal time came we had to go into Sausalito and find parking and deal with crowds or pay the toll to cross the Golden Gate Bridge to get into San Francisco. We tried the restaurant 2 times and both times it was horrible. My wife got the chefs special whcih included a pork shoulder the first dinner there and it was 80% fat (no we didn't complain because it was so hoity toity we couldn't tell if it was supposed to be that way or not and were embarrassed to ask). I got a steak that was okay, but tiny. The 2nd meal we got there was lunch and she got a flat bread sandwich with literally 3 chips and I got a "large plate" of chicken breast which was basically the size of 1/2 of a chicken leg.

As for the rest of the experience, I will simplify it into Pros and Cons:
Pros-
Comfortable beds
Wonderful Views
In a city that seems incredibly crowded and busy, you definitely feel a lot more solitude there
Plenty of places to set alone
Staff very responsive to any request
They were very kind and gave us champagne and a cake for our anniversary

Cons -
There is no thermostat in your room, you literally have to CALL THE FRONT DESK and ask them to turn up/down the temperature in your room... BY FAR the weirdest thing
The restaurant/bar food as mentioned above
There are no black out curtains. While the view is nice, the light wakes you up at sunrise.
I had a contemporary golden gate view but was on the first floor. 1 day there was a "tech conference" going on at the chapel and people kept walking past our patio and looking in our window which was awkward and uncomfortable.

Room Tip: The view of the contemporary golden gate view is wonderful. Request 2nd floor for more privacy if yo...

We started our trip off together in Lake Tahoe, which is Heaven on earth, where we started on our honeymoon thirty years ago. After our ten day stay we traveled SW through Grass Valley and arrived at Cavallo Point Lodge located at Murray Circle, Sausalito, CA, Friday June 27, 2014. The most amazing drive as we were entering the Point from the Golden Gate Bridge, entering the most tranquil, serene nature filled Paradise. We were greeted car-side by Britt, he was our go to Man for any pertinent information during our stay. We loved Britt, what a wonderful personality to make you feel at home, "make sure you check out his shoes". Mark was also incredible to talk too; he helped us with our night out at AT&T SF Giants Ballpark vs our Cincinnati Reds which went 11 innings and won 7 - 3, no hard feelings SF, we are from southern Indiana!! Our room was to Live for, the food we can say was "Culinary Arts at its Finest", the wildlife was beautiful, the staff was very kind & informative. We love Sara at the concierge desk, what a beautiful person and hats off to the gentleman that works with her, sorry can't remember his name. The Spa was fabulous & very relaxing! We absolutely enjoyed our 3 night 4 day stay at Cavallo Point and would return in a heartbeat & will soon! Thank You so much for an everlasting memory well done! We stayed here for 4 nights in august as a family of five and it was poor. We had 3 days and we were planning on going to san francisco for all of them. on arriving we had a friendly greeting but that was it. We were given the room keys and walked across to the room and the room itself was nice but one of the beds had no duvet so we called the maid and asked one up for us it took forever, there was a massive language barrier. They lost more than half the laundry which was crazy expensive anyway and we had to spend half a day looking around SF for clothes!! Breakfast was nice but miserable waiter. This pla c e is sold as a 'resort' but it really isn't all they have is yoga at 7am and a fitness center, no pool no kids activites, its not a resort. all in all we couldnt wait to leave.

Stayed at Cavallo Point for a quick 24 hour birthday getaway. Great rooms, views and really friendly service. Particularly nice for San Francisco Bay Area residents because despite the familiar Golden Gate bridge views, the resort feels a long way away. We stayed in a modern room, might like to try one of the historic ones next time. Apparently they are very different. Lots of little nice touches, like complimentary wine in the late afternoon - great to take a glass out to rocking chairs on the porch. Not inexpensive but well worth it, especially if you don't need airfare. (We'd also booked through an agency and got a bonus breakfast for two and resort credit.)

Room Tip: Historic and modern rooms seem very different, make sure you check which you want when booking.
