“They had to pry me from my Nantucket chair overlooking the Golden Gate!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 June 2010

I travel for a living, and its' rare that I have'nt abandoned my room long before the official check out time. Cavallo Point had me lingering longeer than I can recall in any other property. the placed is tucked away, under the 'Salsalito sid" of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the views from the lush front lawn were hard to give up. Never mind, I loved the old fittings, from door-knobs to iron-toed tubs the place speaks to guests who like myself, sat on front porch rockers, hoisted drinks from the front porch verrandahs, and enjoyed a fully-different view of San Francisco. I was offered the choice of an older, original room, which I chose over the 'contemporary' newer rooms and was pleased that I did. The food was exceptional, with many locals as repeat, walking advertisiments for the food and wine lists. I'll be back to stay - when I'm doing full on business in town, its the Handlery Hotel of Union Square, but when I can get the time and space, I'll be found at Cavallo Point. Location: Breathtaking property with historical heritage. Views of the Golden Gate Bridge and within walking distance to the bridge.

Room: We stayed in a historic queen suite and the room was great. Beautiful building, two room suite with great shower and gas burning fireplace.

Service: Everyone was friendly, but nobody went above or beyond. You are paying for location and not service at Cavallo Point. The shuttle to Sausilito was nice, but rarely on time.

Spa: Relaxing and peaceful, the steam room was great.

I have to give extra kudos because they are dog friendly!

Our stay at the Cavallo Pont was simply incredible. Their advertisement as “A View With Rooms”, while definitely true, actually understated the experience. What set this encounter apart was the obvious comprehensive commitment by staff for the guest to have a happy stay and experience. More on that later. The hotel is set at the old Fort Baker shore battery site located near the base of the north side of the Golden Gate Bridge. Late 1800’s era Field and General Officers quarters surrounding the main drill field were converted into guest houses and sustainable source “green quarters” appointed with bamboo furniture and trim are on the hillside above this already idyllic setting . In addition to stunning views of the bridge itself, the National Forest setting includes panoramic views of the surrounding hills with whisps of cloud and fog blowing over them from the Pacific Ocean, incredible views of the city across the bay from nature trails above the inn, understandably commanding views of Angel and Alcatraz Islandsthe bridge and city from the location of the old shore batteries, the bridge hills and city from many of the rooms, as well as incredible views of the bridge passing ships and sail boats as well as of the city from the rockers on the front porch of the lobby and restaurant buildings just above the parade ground with their adjacent fire pit equipped patio. We spent considerable time wandering the grounds and taking in the views. While enjoying the patio and toasty fire pit, staff brought snug blankets to wrap up to with just take it all in, along with plentiful libations from the indoors bar. The blankets felt like they should be half an inch thick or something - very cozy. The room itself (ours was on the hillside near the old post chapel) was huge and well appointed with flat screen TV, windows that opened to capture the breeze, and a very nice gas fireplace. More than plenty of room. The space had ample storage and desk space along with complimentary wireless internet access. The bath facilities were top notch. Tile work, fixtures, trim and paint - attention to detail was evident. My children insisted on buying extra shampoo and lotion at the girft shop when we checked out. Staff was available to take you around the grounds in golf carts or to shuttle you the short distance into Sausalito for dinners and so forth. Requests were cheerfully accommodated and helpful suggestions offered. There was an on location spa with complete facilities and offerings such as sauna and so forth. Every step of the way, staff was helpful, friendly and available without being intrusive. I really cannot say enough about this experience and how special the staff really was. There are plenty of views with really bad experiences tacked onto them, as well as places where the establishment just has to try harder to overcome a less than ideal setting. This is one of those gems that are few and far between where you get the best of both worlds. They don't have to try harder to overcome an incredible setting but the act like they do. To the staff, "Well Done." Wow. Location is about ten minutes across the Golden Gate to the Presidio and Fisherman’s Wharf and about eleven miles from the Muir Woods. My family was suitably impressed with me for finding this gem, I have to say. The value proposition is subjective - you always pay for what you get. This is one of those rare occasions where you actually get what you pay for. I do not hand out wows in cracker jack boxes. This place is a double wow. Don't miss it if you get the opportunity. Excellent.

We stayed at Cavallo Point in a King Contemporary Suite and it was absolutely incredible. Everything about the property was gorgeous, from the well-appointed (and quiet) room to the stunning, picture-perfect view of the golden gate bridge. Every staff member we interacted with was friendly and extremely helpful. We loved the unique touches in the room: the double sided fireplace, open shower, slate bathroom floor, and big windows. Another thing that impressed us was how eco-friendly the entire property was. We wouldn't hesitate to stay there again!

We decided to stay here for Memorial Day weekend as a quick getaway...We loved the idea of staying at Fort Baker. The location was lovely, we had an ideal weekend to come. The views were great. My teenage daughter loved the location too.

Pros: Found great deal on Perfect Escapes. First room was in historic buidling Queen Suite, though very nice, the rooms were a bit old and noisy. Loved the golf carts that would pick you up and the setting is lovely. We ended up switching to one of the Contemporary Suites and it was much more to our liking, modern, bright, quiet and better views.

Cons: Very limited parking, the restaurant service was spotty, $20 daily parking fee and the spa only allowed 18 and older to visit. My 13 year old could not join me so we decided to forego that part of the trip. No pool and limited dining options.

All in all, we would stay again. It was a great adventure, went to Marin Headlands, Disney Family Museum and Boating at Golden Gate Park. Lovely memories.

As you go over the Golden Gate Bridge from San Francisco you see a cove next to the road; that is where this property is situated. It used to be Fort Baker and they have converted the rooms to a hotel. You have two choices; the historic section (old army buildings that have been nicely refurbished) or the modern, new buildings; we stayed in the modern section.

First of all, not all of the rooms have a view of the Golden Gate Bridge; ours had a view of trees, as did the rooms of several of my colleagues. However, if you walk on the path you do, indeed, see the bridge. That said there are a number of reasons you may want to stay elsewhere:

1) The shower was open and freezing - there was no door.
2) The building is supposedly "green", which, apparently means no heat. They said it was a radient heater but if you have been to San Francisco in the summer you know you need heat! The fireplace is on a timer, with a 2 hour limit, so don't even think about waking in a warm room.
3) You have to walk on dirt paths to get everywhere. They will pick you up in a golf cart, but if you have nice shoes forget about walking.
4) The bed was pretty uncomfortable. Unless you like to sleep on a rock, in which case you would love it.

My biggest concern is that you are in the middle of nowhere. Yes, looking at the Golden Gate Bridge is pretty, but after a few hours (O.K., minutes) of that you realize how isolated you are. Sausalito can be accessed by a shuttle that runs every two hours but there is not much there, either, unless you take the ferry boat to San Francisco.

If you want to stay in the Sausalito area stay at the Hotel Sausalito. It is right next to the ferry boat terminal. The town is quiet enough (especially at night) and you don't feel so isolated. And it is a fraction of the price!

STAY SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
The historic old Fort Baker at the Marin headlands, under the Golden Gate Bridge looking across to San Francisco, is one of the most spectacular spots in the bay area. And that says it all!
The area is part of a national park, open to everyone, and a beautiful place to spend the day. A children's discovery museum is next door, with a snack bar and everything you could want to entertain preschoolers and young gradeschoolers.

And then, there is the hotel itself:
Service - poor. Particularly in the bar and restaurant. It took three requests to get mayonnaise for my hamburger, and then it was garlic aoli (out of mayo!)
Food - great for the ultimate gourmet....maybe. A souffle sadly undercooked, $20 breakfasts. $10 corn dogs which turned out to be mini sausages with an unidentifiable sauce. $15 burgers with a dozen fries. And the dogs and burgers were in the bar!
The bar - Order a drink neat, it is one price. Put it on the rocks, add $2. Ask for it "up", add another dollar. Then hope they have the brands listed on the menu - good luck!

Our room was in the historic officers' housing, with sitting area and view. While it was clean, well furnished, and pleasant, it was not good value at $500+ a night (add $20 a night to self park.)

My recommendation is to find other quarters, and there are lots of great boutique hotels in the area, and make Ft Baker a day trip!
