We had stayed at the Gables Inn on a previous visit to Sausalito and decided to try it again for our anniversary. To get one of the better view rooms, we have learned to book far in advance. We booked in May for our September visit but still didn't get the room we wanted. As it turned out, it was the best room in the inn...room 305, with a sweeping view of Angel Island, Alcatraz, the Bay Bridge and of course, the San Francisco skyline. The room is showing a little wear, spots on the carpet by the bed, one of the window cranks didn't work and the stopper in the bathroom sink didn't work. The room was pricey, but the view made it worth it. What I object to the most is the fact that they charge $20 per day to park on their own property...really? The rate includes a cheese and wine hour in the evening and a continental breakfast each morning. There are only four decent places to stay in Sausalito and this is one of the best, but they need to keep up with some of the minor repairs and wear and tear to warrant the high prices.

Room Tip: Book early to get the room that you want. Bring ear plugs since some rooms front on a busy street.

room 303, Magnolia

The Gables has the potential to be an exceptionally fine B&B; it is close to that standard
but a few glaring problems hold it back.

First the good and really good: the quiet setting just up from shopping, dining, the bay, & transportation; the afternoon wine & cheese social time; breakfast is in a bright setting (including some outside seating) & offerings are good for a "cold" breakfast; the staff was uniformly friendly and kept the breakfast & social hour well stocked & clean. The daily room cleaning was done thoroughly. Room 303 is very large with a terrific view from inside & it is even better from the patio/deck. The bed is very good; the large tv, gas fireplace, jetted tub, and two large "easy" chairs make for a comfortable, inviting room. The décor is rather plain with drab colors for fabrics/ carpet and black & white photos on the walls--but then what does this matter with the view.

Now for the less desirable features. The off street parking is in a very tight lot at an additional charge($15/day); there is really no good alternative as the streets have limited parking hours
and during the day are full early on. Even though the breakfast is quite good as is, the
addition of several hot dishes would be welcome. Room 303 has some problems that
should not exist (especially at this price point): the bathroom sink counter has broken
away from the wall and is now propped-up with spindly legs not designed for this counter--
there has been no effort to fill the crack at the break--the counter needs to be replaced.
The carpet has a large stain more or less in the middle of the room. The caulk joints
at the base of the toilet and between the wall tile & tub are badly stained (possibly mold)--
very unappealing. This room also lacks several items that would greatly add to its
comfort level: there is no radio--just a clock with a dock for I-pod (too bad for non-Apple
owners); the smallish desk is "tied-up" with the snack/beverage ($) tray and coffee maker--
no place to write or put a laptop inside (there is a table on patio/deck); there is
no floor lamp to provide adequate light for reading when using the "easy" chairs.

Sausalito in general and the Gables in particular are great alternatives to San Francisco yet
with two ferry lines just several minutes away one can easily enjoy both.

Room Tip: go for a bay view

The staff at The Gables Inn was so attentive, particularly Sissy, who went out of her way to make our stay spectacular. The inn is within walking distance to the ferry to San Franscisco, and there are tons of shops and restaurants nearby. The inn itself is beautiful and comfortable. We would definitely stay here again!

First, the good...

The room (Redwood) was very nice and attractive and very clean and the bed quite comfortable.

The lobby is great and they have complimentary wine and cheese at 5pm.

Great continental breakfast in the morning.

The location of this property is exceptional, a few steps from the heart of Sausalito.

Now, the bad...

They levy a $20 surcharge for parking. I made the reservation online and this was not evident on their website.

We arrived at the property at 3pm, the published check in time, to be told that our room was not ready yet. No apologies, no comps, just "it should be ready in a half hour".

When we get our room, it's very hot and stuffy so we turn on the (what we thought was) a/c. The room never really cooled down even though we turned the control to max cool. During the night, it was so warm I had to open the window then got mosquito bites.

Next morning I mention to the desk clerk that the a/c wasn't working and was told there's no a/c in the building. The cool setting is just ventilation and that you have to open the windows when it's warm. If that's the system, shouldn't they at least have screens on the windows?

Overall, it was an enjoyable stay but only three stars because of the above issues.

Room Tip: Redwood is nice, right off the lobby but completely quiet and private.

Shame on me as I just checked the reservation sent by email at the time and it confirmed one of two rooms?! I had a detailed discussion with the reservations receptionist on the original call and had requested a specific room based upon the description. We were interested in the view. But, when we checked in we found that the assigned room (302)
looked into rooms across the courtyard. The view of SF Bay through the power wires was marginal. I have no idea whether this was the "room with the view" or the other one on our reservation (303) instead had it. The fireplace did not work and no one appeared able to deal with it for the two nights we were there.
The above in my view (to use a word) keeps Gables from being outstanding. Breakfast, wine and cheese in the late afternoon, and proximity to all things Sausalito makeg this a great stop.

Room Tip: Inspect the rooms to see if veiws match your expectations
