“Bike trail Sebastopol to Santa Rosa”

Joe Rodota Trail at Sonoma County Parks
Reviewed 4 June 2013

Park your car in downtown Sebastopol and ride seven miles to Santa Rosa. Paved bike trail follows the abandoned railroad right of way, so there is little elevation change to battle for beginners.

This is a lovely trail, wooded, quiet and fairly flat...an easy walk, run or bike depending on how far you go...I usually pick it up near Analy High School and walk for an hour or so...

Decided to try this after reading all of the great reviews. Have to believe none of the other reviewers ever made it to the Santa Rosa section where we started. This is an awful place to walk and we felt uneasy. No beauty, no serenity, nothing but industrial properties with chain link fence and razor wire..... Occasional homeless camps, trash everwhere, stench, and road noise. Definitely NOT our idea of a great place to walk. Kept walking west for over 30 minutes at a quick pace thinking it would get better but it never did. Turned around after 30 minutes and walked even faster back to get out.

The trail is literally in my own back yard and I started walking it as part of my recovery from back surgery back in October 20113. And although within Santa Rosa the south side is fronted by the rear of business establishments and the north by highway 12 with its whir of speeding cars the trail still offered a certain serenity and peacefulness. I haven't gotten to the western side of the trail which is decidedly more rural and am looking forward to an even more rewarding journey.

I walk this trail often and it is always interesting and beautiful no matter the time of year. Right now the area is ablaze with mustard and, with the stark and bare Valley Oaks set therein, it is a photographers dream. Easy to access at both ends and in the middle and the Hopmonk Tavern is just across the street at the west end.
