The Palomar Inn
Ranked #1 of 1 Shell Beach B&B and Inns
Reviewed 30 July 2012

Motel with few cabins situated next to Hwy 1 and close to the ocean. From outside the motel looks charming with its light blue buildings, but inside the rooms are very small and questionably clean. Neither The Palomar Inn nor the small village, Shell Beach is recommendable for an overnight stop. The price for a room is much to high. There are no breakfast and  WI-FI included. Find another place to stay overnight if you just need a pit-stop between LA and SF.

Modest and small but it was perfect for us. Good local restaurant nearby (Zorro). 30 minutes walk to Pismo Beach.

I tried to avoid this place after reading few negative reviews on Trip advisor. We were so pleasantly surprised by this motel. With best location and great price, I tempted to try it out. I and my wife stayed there last weekend in one of the room with kitchen. It is not a dump, little gem on central coast. New manager who is also family of management provided us with warm welcome and great service. They have managed 60 room motel for 10 years and now downsized to manage this family motel of 14 rooms. Every room is special and has all amenities you can find in five star hotel room.
Yes, the rooms are small, yes the bathroom is small. But it's clean, great location and good value. I uses business center which is well equipped with computers, internet and printer and beautiful ocen view.
I strongly recommend this little gem to travelers.

Room Tip: Try to get room toward ocean, avoid noise from 101

We were traveling with a small dog and this is a dog friendly hotel (as is the whole town of Pismo Beach) This is a very quaint little place to stay, nicely remodeled, clean and did not smell at all like your typical motel room. No dog smell either!!!! Some rooms are smaller than others so maybe see if you can see the room first. I love the neighborhood that this hotel is in, just one block from the ocean surrounded by lovely beach homes. Management was very helpful also.

Room Tip: Many different type rooms at this hotel so see what fits your needs.

This place is a dump, would never recommend that someone stay here. The only good think were the Managers, John and Carolyn were great to work with, very professional and friendly people, willing to help in any way they could.

The room with kitchenette we stayed in was dungy, smelled moldy and in great need of renovation. Rust spots were noted above the lightening fixture in the bathroom and in various places in the kitchenette. The carpets seemed old and mildewy. When we first arrived, the heating unit was not working. John called someone in to change the thermostat which got the heater working after about an hour the person spent trying to get it fixed. Once turned on, the odor and dust that came out of the heater was overwhelming, so bad that we had to turn the heater off and open the door so that we would not suffocate. Once we tried to get the heater on the next day, it never worked so we had to borrow to floor heaters to keep the room warm.

The parking lot is in severe need of repairs as the asphalt is uneven, splitting and dangerous to walk on, which makes it easy for someone to slip on. Also, the place is not ADA compliant as it does’ not have any handicap parking spaces.

The white illuminated sign with missing numbers on the front of the place should be taken down as well as the red vacancy sign which flickers on and off. The curb appeal of this place is awful, making it look a "shady" place to stay.

The owners need to spend some money on this place. Don't waste your money on this dump.

If you need to stay somewhere close to this dump, try the Shell Beach Inn which is about 4 blocks south. It is a very nice place, clean rooms, good parking area, ADA compliant.

This very basic hotel is in a good location (short driving distance to the pier and to the outlet stores). Also, Steaming Bean, a great place for a quick coffee and breakfast, is right next door. The customer service was very friendly. The smoke detector in my room beeped intermittently, and the hotel manager sent someone right away to change the battery when I went to the office to report it. Here are the positives: clean towels & sheets, lots of hot water, extra pillows, HBO in room, and free parking & wifi (although the wifi was inconsistent and not password protected, which gave me pause when I wanted to check my bank account online).
Overall, a good place to stay on a budget. I have no serious complaints. The only reason why I would not return is that I am a very light sleeper and the walls are paper thin. I could hear the conversation of the people in the room next door to me when they returned at 1am. Thankfully, they went to bed shortly thereafter.

This is my second visit, and first after remodeled its look great, nice paint, clean and comfortable beds, bathroom all remodel, excellent customer service. It is very convenient close to shopping center, beach and on Highway one. The staff was very friendly, manager even went above and beyond his way to provide us with extra pillow and blanket. Also recommend us great restaurants in the area. The neighborhood is very quiet too. We have thoroughly enjoyed our second visit. I would highly recommend anybody visiting this area!
