“Quick Getaway”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 24 January 2014

We had a few days off from work, and wanted to explore a place a short roadtrip away. I chose Hadsten house for their 2 night Midweek Spa Package, which included 2 massages, daily breakfast, and a list of free and discounted wine tastings. Then we just stayed an extra night. Prior reviews described poor staff quality. We went there not expecting much, but they answered any of our questions, and helped book out spa treatments without any difficulty. The staff appear young, and may not have been trained well in customer service. The breakfast staff were excellent. The spa is located on the premises, but their masseuses are on call, and you will need to plan and schedule ahead of time. The massages were excellent!
The rooms were very clean. But you are able to hear the street adjacent to the hotel, and the refrigerator in the room was a bit noisy. The hotel is close to everything, including Los Olivos. It is walking distance to all of the attractions, restaurants, and stores of Solvang. We even took a morning run to scope out the shops and restaurants we wanted to visit.
I highly recommend this hotel. I would definitely stay here again.

Hadsten House was a great place to stay in Solvang. Their restaurant is really good and their spa is incredible. I got the most amazing honey facial and a really relaxing massage when I stayed there for a weekend getaway. Solvang is a cute little European-inspired village near Santa Barbara. It's close to tons of awesome restaurants and wineries. Definitely worth a visit!

We stayed at the Hadsten House one night while driving to San Diego. We got upgraded to a suite at no additional charge, which was a great and welcome surprise. Staff was very helpful, the rooms were nice. Overall, our stay was a pleasant experience. I highly recommend the place.

We have stayed at the Hadsten House several times since June 2010. Although the hotel has changed ownership during that time and a few changes have been made, the management continues to strive to provide a quality experience for their guests. On our last visit we had a few problems with our room which could not be remedied. We were eventually given a new room for our second night and not charged for our first night's stay. We appreciated the way the situation was handled. The hotel still has a mid-week special rate, a full American breakfast and a list of several wineries in the area with free wine tastings for the guests of the hotel. All of these features make the hotel an exceptional value.

We stayed for one night at Hadsten House in room 106, mainly because we were so attracted to the food at their Bistro restaurant during a previous visit.

Pluses
• Friendly service, easy check-in and check-out
• They gave us 30 minutes extra for check-out even though hotel was full
• Lovely electrically-operated fireplace
• Wi-fi easily available and reliable
• Good TV stations
• Free breakfast at the Bistro. It was a very good breakfast
• If you can't find the refrigerator at first, keep looking. In our room, it was inside the closet.
• No noise of footsteps from the group staying in the room above us.
• An easy stroll to the shops but on the Hwy 101 side of town, so easy to escape in-town jammed traffic after you check out
• Coffee and tea maker
• Near a convenience/souvenir store

Minus
• U-shaped motel-style layout with cars parked in front of rooms, so frequent noise of families outside
• Noise of traffic on street but not really bothersome

We feel the pluses outweigh the small minuses. And of course the great meals at the Bistro are only a few steps away from the room.

We are still at the hotel as I write this. We checked in late afternoon yesterday. Room is pleasant enough - though it does still remind one of exactly what it is...a renovated motel. You can hardly call the appliance in the room a "fireplace" since it does not flame and gives off zero heat when "turned on" but that was the least of the problems. Upon visiting the loo, we discovered the toilet backed up. We immediately contacted the front desk...who told my husband "we'll bring you a plunger". Yes. You are reading that correctly. Not "we'll send someone to look at it" or "we'll be right there to check this for you"...but "we'll bring you a plunger". Yes, because that's what I like to do in a room that's costing $200 a night. Plunge the toilet. Which we did. It now functions just fine. I walked over to the front office to complain about how this was handled and was told, bluntly, "we're not permitted to fix anything". I mean....honestly.....I have no issue with the room - it's clean, comfortable - only minor complaint is the noise from the road if you're in a front room. I contribute to trip advisor a bit and have never given a bad review....but I just cannot believe "we'll bring you a plunger" is their idea of customer service. She also told us (as she was walking away quickly after handing us a plunger) "Every room is inspected, it couldn't possibly be backed up!" Right. Now it's our fault.

For a $89/night motel, I get it. For $200 a night? No. Bathroom remodel is a bit tacky too but the backed up toilet was an added bonus.

Room Tip: Choose rooms away from the street....with toilets that hopefully work or bring a travel plunger!

I liked this motel. The staff was pleasant and helpful. I thought the rooms were nicely decorated, not the usual motel fare. The carpets were a little dirty, but everything else was fine. We met someone to celebrate Christmas there and the fireplace in the room was a nice touch for that! The beds were comfortable. Someone said the pool was "murky." Our 4-year old swam in it and seemed to enjoy it. It may have seemed murky because it wasn't well lit in the room with the pool, but I didn't think it was murky! The breakfast was very nice -- orange juice, fried potatoes, gravy, bacon, eggs, oatmeal, etc. and assorted fruit. The only complaint I had was that the wi-fi was totally useless. Didn't work all all part of the time, the rest of the time it was so slow that it was useless. But I've found that to be far too common in many hotels/motels.
