“Disappointed in Sonoma”
Reviewed 27 September 2011

The ED Kitchen is fabulous (great food, wonderful service) and it was such a pleasure to walk upstairs to our room afterward and not have to deal with driving, parking, etc. Our room was spacious but the bath was tiny (two people could not be in it at the same time). Worse, it was on the street side and the traffic noise was brutal starting about 5:00 a.m. Worse yet there was a street lamp directly in front of the window and the light came through the shutters all night long. Between the light and the noise, we had a terrible night's sleep. We would consider staying here again, because of the restaurant and location on the square, but certainly not on the street side.

Room Tip: Rooms off the street side are an absolute must.

This is a great place to stay; it's quiet and in a great location. It's clean too. The only bad thing is there is no elevator to take your bags up. I stayed there in 1994, and then in September 2011. It is up to par and updated. For a less expensive alternative in a great location, this option is one that you should consider!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the street with a balcony

We stayed for 2 nights at El Dorado and we liked it. The room is nice and clean. It is right in Sonoma plaza and easiy accessible to some wineries. We arrived on Tuesday and much to our surprise, the community has a farmer's market from 5:30 till around 8:30 in the park across the hotel. You can bring some bottles of wine, buy some delicious food that locals are selling and have a picnic. The food in the restaurant are good and so as the breakfast special in their cafe. You can hear people's foosteps in the hallway but we didn't have a hard time sleeping. What do you expect from an old building turned hotel. All the hotels i saw in Sonoma plaza are just renovated old buildings.

Small hotel in historic building right on town square. Great location, great service with an excellent bar and restaurant and a small cafe. Our room was pretty small but we were told it was one of the biggest they had. Small closet, no drawers to speak of, outdated bathroom, old fashioned CRT tv. Free wifi though. Would recommend based on location and bar/cafe/restaurant but not for rooms.

We stayed for 2 nights at the El Dorado. The room was really beautiful and very quiet even though our balcony overlooked the restaurant/bar. Make sure you eat in he restaurant, really enjoyable atmosphere and a fantastic selection of wines. Everywhere in the town is within walking distance which makes the wine even more enjoyable. It is possible to do wine country without a car.

We chose the hotel for the location: right on the main plaza. We were able to taste wines and enjoy drinks without having to worry about one of us being the designated driver.
The lobby is uninteresting and the hallways are somewhat shabby. Our room, room 16, was a decent size and nicely furnished and decorated. The bed was extremely comfortable and we both had a good sleep. The bathrom is very small with a shower only.
The pool is small and the pool area is separated from the restaurant patio by a low fence. My husband swam, but I was too self conscious to be walking around in a bathing suit while people were dining a few metres away. The hotel offers free wi-fi, so I wrote Tripadvisor reviews while my husband used the pool.
We dined in the restaurant. The food quality and service were exceptional (the braised pork belly tasted like sugar candy and the corn soup was like liquid velvet). Even if you do not stay at the hotel, I would highly recommend the restaurant.
Our only complaint was the noise from the street. We always bring ear plugs with us (see my review of the MGM Grand), but even wearing the ear plugs I was woken at dawn by a garbage truck and could not block out the sounds of traffic thereafter.
Bottom line: location location location. If you don't want to worry about drinking and driving, the El Dorado is a pleasant place to stay.

Room Tip: Bring ear plugs and ask for a room overlooking the pool or restaurant.

We spent Spring break with our teenagers in Northern California. We tried to sneak in some time in Sonoma along the way. This hotel was right in the town center. We got in after 5 as most of the businesses had closed. I wish we would have arrived sooner because there looked to be some great shopping. we ended up going to dinner at a mexican restaurant on the other side of the street. it was great but the hotel smelled like a culinary delight. Again, we were with our kids...but decided to have a night cap at the hotel bar and emjoyed it. Everyone was very friendly and the lady at the front desk helped us out with some passes for wine tours. she also recommended to us places that were teen friendly. Rooms and bathrooms are small but so is the town center....just the way it is. Exactly what we expected and wish we could have stayed loger to shop and enjoy the history.
