“Great location, great hosts, great accommodations”
Reviewed 15 August 2012

Just got back from a 2 night stay at Alexandra's Plaza Suite. We've stayed at various other high end hotels/cottages in Sonoma and have finally found "our fave". Very comfortable, very clean private cottage tucked behind homes on upscale, quiet Second St in downtown. It's a 2 minute stroll to the square. The cottage has excellent amenities, and the little details Cathie & Gene provide give such a personal touch -- they truly want you to be comfortable and enjoy. The bed linens and bed are luxurious. They even offer several different pillows to choose from so you can find "just the right one". They provide a well stocked fridge (literally, we could have stayed a week with all the drinks, juices, fruit, dairy). They also provide coffee, tea, danish, oatmeal, granola bars, popcorn and candy too! We were fortunate to spend time with Gene and taste his award winning wines and get a personal education on wine-making. His Albarino was delicious! We enjoyed Tues night farmer's market in the Square. Great local venue with food, craft booths, music and friendly people. Gene & Cathie invited us to join their group in the park and we (again) were treated to some delicious wines, food & home grown veggies/fruits. The cottage also has a nice private gazebo/patio area with comfy louge chairs and nice lighting to enjoy the warm Sonoma nights with great wine. Stay here. You will love it.

This was a wonderful, comfortable cottage to stay at. The location was excellent (very easy walking distance to the square), numerous wineries within easy driving distance, and Cathie and Gene are the best hosts ever. Their recommendations were spot on--the Depot Hotel for dinner was amazing--food, service, and ambiance. The Benzinger winery was also lovely and the wines were divine. Gene is a veritable encyclopedia of knowledge about grapes, wine, and wine making. I'm just sorry we were only here for a couple of days--but we will most certainly be back!

You will be hard pressed to find accomodations in Sonoma for under $200/ night that are as good as these. It is actually a small cottage in back of other houses and is very quiet though convenient to the plaza. The hosts are great...just wish we could have spent more time with them, but we were gone all day for the time we were here. They made dinner reservations for us and were more than helpful in answering questions and giving info, plus the house is stocked with books/magazines about the area. Great place...would stay again.

I loved my stay here. It is located a block from downtown Sonoma on a quiet residential street. I was able to easily walk to dinner at one of the great restaurants on the square. Gene and Cathie werr amazing hosts. They provided me with perfect tips on which wineries to visit in the area, as well as other things to do. The cottage was well equipped with everything you would need during your stay, they even had a picnic basket you could borrow. Gene was very kind in allowing me to sample some of his homemade wine, which was very good. I would definitely stay here again.

This was our home for our three night stay in September and it exceeded all expectations. It is in a lovely neighborhood around which you could take early morning or evening walks. The pretty little patio filled with potted plants was perfect for enjoying our coffee and the fresh pastries we bought every morning along with the newspaper - just two blocks away. It is an ideal base for day trips, or from which you could explore the town and museums of Sonoma. We would head back to the patio for cocktails and then prepare our dinner and take it back out to the patio with the wine we'd picked that day - sitting in the light of the candles that were so thoughtfully supplied. The range of items, accessories, appliances, food, and beverages was impressive - even a station for your ipod. Cathie and Gene apparently love Sonoma so much that they want to make certain their guests lack absolutely nothing so they can give their full attention to enjoy just being there.

This place is lovely, clean, refreshing.l My husband and I stayed there recently and were delighted to find such a welcoming and delightful place for the brief respite which we needed. Throughout our long weekend there I kept thinking about how nice it was, and how it might be described in a single word. These words came to mind: tasteful, lovely, clean, fresh, welcoming, comfortable, generous, well-stocked, accommodating, peaceful, quiet, close (easy walk to town), luxurious (see the pillow choices and comfortable bed), thoughtful. Cathie and Gene Sperring have thought of everything to make the traveler comfortable and at ease. They went out of their way to be sure we had what we liked on hand when we arrived, and added other nice touches along the way. The cupboards are stocked with all the things you might need. We arrived very tired in the evening and were able to make ourselves a warm cup of tea with a biscotti (from several choices of healthy treats provided). We have stayed in many places in all ranges of comfort level, and in my view, this place matches or exceeds the best. Book with confidence, but save some dates for us because we hope to be back!

Room Tip: This is in a quiet residential area, with close parking if you drive.

Our stay was limited to a couple hours, but it was sufficient time to appreciate the kindness of the hosts. The place is spotless and very comfortable. They recommended us very good breakfast and dinner spots. We had the pleasure to share a glass of wine with Mr. Sperring who is a home winemaker and an excellent one! He briefly shared with us his knowledge and passion wine, AWESOME!
