“Beautiful Sonoma hotel”
Reviewed 13 July 2009

We recently stayed at MacArthur Place for three nights as part of our honeymoon trip. We found the hotel, its gardens and staff to be charming. The room was incredibly comfortable, with a great bathroom. The hotel offers many services, such as a wine hour for you to mingle with fellow guests, vouchers for local vineyards and bikes for hire. The grounds are beautiful, the pool was lovely and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
Another reviewer has stated that the rooms were "so 1990". Okay, they were a bit chintzy but they actually suit the surroundings of the gardens and pool area. We did not use the spa as we found the prices a little steep, but we were given a discount voucher and a number of other guests seemed to be taking advantage of this.
Highly recommended!

My new husband and I just returned from a stay at MacArthur place. We spent three nights there and took advantage of both the on-site restaurant and spa.

Our room was beautiful, large and comfortable. We were upgraded upon check-in (although the attendant did not explain why- we're guessing it was because we were on our honeymoon) to a deluxe king suite with a seating area in front of the fireplace and a rain shower. Housekeeping was excellent and provided turn-down service every night.

My husband had a massage which he says was one of the best in his life. I wanted to get a haircut and the front desk attendant recommended me to a local salon which was wonderful. A different front desk attendant also helped us plan winery visits and we were overall pleased with his recommendations (although I wouldn't eat at the Glen Ellen Inn again). He also gave us complimentary tasting coupons for several wineries, which probably saved us $60 on the day we toured wineries.

The restaurant was just okay. Creamed spinach was just boiled spinach sitting in watery cream and the au gratin potatoes were extremely oily. I had an excellent crab cake, though, and my husband enjoyed his steak. For the price we paid, though, you can eat much better in Sonoma Plaza, which has several wonderful restaurants.

One of our complaints would definitely be the attitude of the person who checked us in- she was unfriendly and that's not a good way to start your stay. However, the room, the gorgeous gardens, and the spa definitely deserve accolades.

We just got back from a road trip from Seattle to LA, where we spend two nights at MacArthur Place. We loved our stay and hightly recommend it!

The hotel is perfectly situated just four blocks from quaint Sonoma Square, and the grounds at the site itself are lovely...meandering paths with checker and chess boards, a secluded pool with plenty of seating, and lovely, well-maintained gardens abounding. We took part in the afternoon wine and cheese events and met many fellow travelers.

Staff were nice on the whole (our check-in woman was a bit sarcastic, but everyone else was very friendly) and helpful. We had two rooms, one for us and another for our adult daughter. Both rooms were absollutely gorgeous!! The decorating was above reproach, and the details were exceptional (bathrobes, mints, and we loved the extra daybed in each room). The bathrooms felt decadent as well.

The only complaints I can mention are that there were no full length mirrors in our rooms, and the air conditioner was preset to 75 degrees, which we were unable to change. I like to sleep in cool rooms, so it felt a bit stuffy at times, but not terribly uncomfortable. We never did contact the front desk about this situation, so it may be an easy fix.

Next time we're in wine country, we will absolutely make this our home away from home again!

We stayed here for 4 nights in May, and this was one of the nicest rooms we have ever stayed in -- the room was luxurious, the balcony was a nice quiet place to relax, and the bathroom was fabulous and I loved the amenities from the spa... they smelled devine! The wine and cheese in the evenings was a great way to seque into the dinner hour, and the grounds were well kept and fun to stroll around. It was a short walk to Sonoma square, where there was a great choice of restaurants and shops. Helpful staff. Great room. Fantastic location ... make for an A-plus experience

This hotel is very convenient to the Sonoma Square. You can walk it, but it is a long walk. The grounds are wonderful. I don’t think we ever saw a leaf or flower out of place. The rooms are older, but nice. The beds were a little worn and the towels a little rough. But the place was very well maintained. It is not a $400 room. Look for a deal. We loved relaxing at the pool. Don’t miss out on the wine and cheese happy hour. They served some nice local wines. Overall the staff was very nice, except for the folks at the restaurant. The rooms come with a free breakfast and the restaurant staff seemed like it was a hassle to them to serve the guests. The best thing is you are near some great restaurants and wineries. Dinner was great at Estate. For the wineries go to Gundlach Bundschu, but skip Buena Vista. Buena Vista is known for the beautiful scenery, not the wine. If you venture out of town go to Benzinger and take the tour. One last word of advice ask the front desk for free passes to the wineries. It will save you a few bucks.

I absolutely loved my stay at MacArthur Place.. the grounds are absolutely beautiful, lush landscaping , with a European feel .... I didnt want to leave ! The staff went out of their way to be accomodating .. Loved the" Library ".. wine and cheese served nightly to guests.. and the complimentary breakfast was a treat..(fabulous fresh berries!) This is one of the nicest inns I have stayed at in the wine country . ( I have stayed in Napa and St.Helena in previous years... so I had comparisons to make!) The rates were very reasonable for such an upscale inn..... Last but not least .. that grapeseed lotion is to die for! Love it! A great get away spot, ... solo , or with a partner , this is a real gem in Sonoma! Im glad I found it! Linda .... Scottsdale , Arizona
